Course Descriptions
*Note: Many Of The Courses Are Taught Throughout The Entire Program. We Have Found This To Be
Beneficial For Retaining And Applying The Information You Will Learn.
CORE CLASSES:
A&P101 / ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY In this class you will learn the anatomical structures and functions
of the major systems of the body and how they relate to the field of Massage and Bodywork. The
lymphatic, immune, reproductive, digestive, urinary, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous and
integumentary systems will be studied on an introductory level. Knowledge of anatomical structures will help
you better understand endangerment sites on the body and provide a firm foundation for how the body
moves and functions. It is imperative to know how the body functions for the health and well-being of
yourself and your clients. During the second and third quarter of this program you will study the major
muscles in the body to include attachment sites and actions. This class will prepare you with the information
necessary to best help your future clients and build your practice.
PATH 101 / PATHOLOGY Massage and Bodywork is an integral part of the healthcare system. This is why
it is so beneficial to have an extensive knowledge of disorder, syndromes and diseases. This pathology class
is designed to take you through the most common diseases by body system. You will learn the affects
massage can have on your clients as it relates to certain pathologies. You will gain the knowledge and
confidence necessary for proper techniques to apply or avoid.

KINES 101 / KINESIOLOGY One of the basic characteristics of life is movement: the body is meant to
move. In this portion of your program, you will understand how the body should move and common
distortions you will see in your practice. You will learn how to apply various massage modalities in order to
treat gait and postural distortions to facilitate well-being in those you treat.
TECH 101 / MASSAGE TECHNIQUE Because technique and hands-on skills provide the foundation
necessary for your success in the field of Massage & Bodywork, this class makes up the bulk of this program.
After all, your technique is what will make you an excellent Massage Therapist. This program offers an
extensive variety of massage modalities to include Seated Massage, Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial
Release, Neuromuscular Therapy, Muscle Energy Techniques, Sports Massage and Injury Treatment, Hot
Stone, Pre-Natal / Post-natal and Infant Massage, and Geriatric and Terminally Ill Massage. At the end of
this program you will have an extensive knowledge on how to treat each individual client by pulling from the
myriad of modalities you learn.
THRY 101 / MASSAGE THEORY Hands on skills work, but why? This class will teach you the theory and
physiology behind the techniques that work. History of the various massage modalities will be discussed as
well as important founders in the industry for a well-rounded look at the origin of massage and changing
trends.
BUS 101 / BUSINESS Toward the end of your program, you will be taught the basics of business. Many in
the field find it very fulfilling to have their own practice. This class will teach you how to start and
successfully maintain your own massage practice. You will learn guidelines, boundaries and ethics as they
relate to the field of Massage and Bodywork. This class was designed to benefit all students of Massage.
You will find that you will benefit from this business class even if you don’t plan on operating your own
business. Client retention protocols as well as soft skills will be emphasized in this class.
COMP 101 / COMPUTERS This computer class will give you the tools necessary to create a solid business
plan that can be used immediately after graduating. Various computer programs will be introduced to make
the process fun and fulfilling.
CLS 101 / CLINICALS During your student clinics, you will gain the confidence needed to become a
successful Massage Therapist. You will also learn about scheduling clients, soft skills and proper
documentation. 50 hours of your clinics must be performed onsite. You may start your clinics as early as
your second month of the program. The remaining 50 may be done outside of class. You will be provided a
checklist of the types of massages you will be required to perform outside of class. You may also count class
off-sites as part of your outside massages. Performing Massage Therapy Sessions on professional Massage
Therapists will ensure your understanding and comprehension of hands-on techniques.
*NOTE: EACH STUDENT MUST CHOOSE ONE ELECTIVE DURING THEIR TIME AT NTSM.
ELECTIVE CLASSES WILL BE OFFERED AT VARIOUS TIMES ON FRIDAY FOR THE QUARTER IN
WHICH THEY ARE TAUGHT. THE MEDICAL ELECTIVE REQUIRES ADDITIONAL TIME (2
SATURDAYS A MONTH) AND ADDITIONAL TUITION. YOU HAVE THE OPTION OF COMPLETING 1,
2, OR ALL 3 OF THE ELECTIVE TRACKS OFFERED.
CAREER ELECTIVE TRACKS:
EA 201 / EASTERN THEORY ELECTIVE During Eastern Theory you will learn a variety of ancient massage
traditions. Included in this will be the history and theory of traditional Chinese medicine, shiatsu, Thai

CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES:
PRE and PERI NATAL MASSAGE THERAPY This 2 day workshop is designed as a comprehensive guide to
perinatal massage, including the benefits of massage during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. The
practitioner will study the anatomical and physiologic changes that occur in each of these phases as well as
how to support special-needs pregnancies with massage. Techniques and guidelines will be demonstrated as
well as business considerations for the professional massage therapist interested in focusing in this area.
GERIATRIC & TERMINALLY ILL This 6 hour CEU is designed to inform the massage therapist who is
interested in bringing the benefits of touch to a broad range of people in need. It will give the practitioner
the confidence to practice massage in a variety of settings, including hospices, hospitals, skilled nursing
facilities, and home care. The practitioner will learn techniques that are safe and appropriate for the
population for whom conventional massage may cause discomfort or even injury. It gives the massage
therapist an understanding of the physical and emotional needs of the elderly and those suffering from
chronic illness and/or injury.
HYDROTHERAPY FOR THE MASSAGE THERAPIST This 8 hour CE class offers a modern approach to
hydrotherapy. The student will learn about the use of water, ice, steam, and hot and cold temperatures to
improve or maintain health, as performed by massage therapists. Explanations of how hydrotherapy affects

focus on how massage therapists may use hydrotherapy treatments before and during massage sessions and
how to educate clients for self care and better results between sessions.
REFLEXOLOGY This 2 day workshop teaches all areas of core reflexology knowledge for massage therapists
at all levels. The practitioner will learn the foundations of reflexology history and theory; as well as
techniques and sequences carefully supported by case studies and clinical research. This class will help
practitioners progress smoothly to intermediate and advanced clinical skills.

School Policies
Attendance Requirements
Students are expected to attend 100% of all classes. This includes arriving on time for class with proper
materials. An overall attendance rate of at least 80% is required. Unexcused absences must be made up
within two weeks of the missed class as designated by your instructor. Instructors may request your
withdrawal from a course or program if absences exceed 70%. Any student arriving 30 minutes late or
leaving 30 minutes early from class will be marked as absent for that day.
Tardiness
Tardiness is expected to be kept to a minimum because it is disruptive to the other students, the teacher,
and to your own learning. We understand weather can be a factor and we will honor extenuating
circumstances. However, instructors will not have time to repeat information and those who are tardy will be
required to make up missed information. Chronic tardiness including leaving early will be counted as
absences and will accrue additional assignments from the instructor. Instructors may request your
withdrawal from a course or program if tardiness exceeds 70%.
Leave of Absence
Students who are unable to continue classes for medical reasons or severe personal problems will be
required to take a leave of absence until they are able to return to class. Proper documentation will be
required to substantiate a student’s withdrawal.
Re-admittance
If a student drops out of a program at any time and later wishes to reenroll, she/he must schedule an
interview. Re-admittance is granted individually based upon a student's past performance, education, and life
experience.
Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy
Students must maintain a 75% grade point average in order to comply with Satisfactory Academic Progress
(SAP) policy. Those who do not will be placed on probation for 30 days. During the probation period
students must raise their grade average to passing or higher. The student may be terminated if grades are
not satisfactory at the end of the probationary period. Termination shall be at the school’s Board of Directors
discretion. The Board has final authority and shall notify the student of the final decision.
Homework Policy
Students are given adequate time to complete the homework assigned. Late homework will accrue additional
assignments from the instructor.
Conduct Policy
All students are expected to act maturely and are required to respect other students and faculty members.
Possession of weapons, illegal drugs, and alcohol of any kind are not allowed at any time on school property
or during school activities. Actions that can be grounds for probation, suspension, and or dismissal include
any behavior that might jeopardize the school, its reputation, or the massage therapy profession. Examples
include: inappropriate sexual behavior, aggressive or foul language, unnecessary use of cell phones, broken
or financial agreements, unsatisfactory grades, willful abuse of MBCE property, staff, or students. Any
violation of school policies may result in probation, suspension, or permanent dismissal from school.
Natural Therapeutics School of Massage Catalog
10
Probation / Suspension Policy
A violation of the school policies and code of conduct may result in probation. Probation will allow a student
to continue in a program under certain conditions monitored by the director. This may include suspension if
he or she does not prepare sufficiently, neglects assignments, or makes unsatisfactory progress. After
appropriate counseling with the Director of Education, students who demonstrate a genuine desire to learn
and conform to school standards of conduct, may be allowed to resume attendance. The director will review
each case and decide upon re-admittance.
School Disciplinary Policies
Disciplinary action may be taken for failure to comply with the Satisfactory Academic Progress
(SAP) Policy; Student Conduct Policies; and failure to meet financial obligations. All matters of disciplinary
actions are coordinated by the Director of Education. After consultation with the party/ parties involved and
action is deemed necessary, the Director of Education will proceed as follows:
Probation:
Probationary status indicates that a student may continue in the program and/or class for a specified period
of time under certain conditions monitored by the Director of Education.
Suspension/Withdrawal:
The student would continue with the program but would be suspended or withdrawn from classes for the
duration of the quarter. Once the student demonstrates a genuine desire to learn and conforms to school
standards of conduct, they may be allowed to resume attendance. The director will review each case and
decide upon re-admittance. Refund of tuition would depend on percentage of the class completed.
Dismissal/Withdrawal:
The student would be dismissed from the program. A dismissal/withdrawal notice will be sent by certified
mail to the student. A dismissed student may request a re-evaluation of his/her particular circumstances
within one week of notification of action. A three member review committee composed of administration and
faculty members will review the student’s file after the student has the opportunity to present his/her case,
and issue a final decision. Dismissed students my reapply six months after the time of dismissal.
Financing Policy:
Upon Enrollment the student will choose a specific payment option and sign an enrollment agreement. A
contractual agreement will be drafted and signed. If a student fails to continue out the payment schedule as
outlined in the contract, or falls behind on 3 or more consecutive payments, the student will be withdrawn
from class and will not be able to continue until payments are resumed and balance is caught up.
