Dear Parents and Students,
Summer vacation is almost here! It is important to remember that students need to practice
academic skills during these months. Due to the lengthy summer break, many students lose
momentum with their academic progress and fail to maintain a healthy academic lifestyle. As a part of
your child’s requirements for tenth grade honors English, students are required to participate in
summer reading assignments to promote continued academic practice.
This summer your child will be required to read and write one essay over both Animal Farm by
George Orwell and The Green Mile by Stephen King. Your child will also be required to create a
collage that represents key points from one of the novels. Attached are the summer reading
requirement sheet and rubrics we will use to evaluate your child’s work.
We encourage any questions you might have and look forward to teaching your child during
the 2013/2014 school year. Our email addresses are listed below for your use. You may also contact
the school directly by dialing (912)754-6404.

Summer Reading Requirements

day of school. On the first day of school you will turn in one essay and one collage. These
are each worth one test grade for a total of two test grades. NO EXCEPTIONS. NO
EXTENSIONS.
PART ONE (Essay)
Write an essay over Animal Farm and The Green Mile. This essay MUST be submitted to your teacher
on the first day of school!
Prompt: As you’re reading the two novels, consider the ways the authors use literary devices to
engage their readers and to add depth to their writing. Literary elements enable readers to visualize,
make connections, discover new ways of thinking, and create meaning. In particular, consider how
the author uses either symbolism, foreshadowing, suspense, or irony in Animal Farm and The Green
Mile. In your essay, select one of the four literary devices and discuss instances in the novels where
that device plays an important role and has major impact. Support your arguments with relevant and
sufficient evidence. You must cite examples, use direct quotations, and give credit to the authors for
their work when you use it in your essay.
