Experiment Summary Please provide a summary of the proposed work. The summary must clearly state the potential physics impact (research and education) of the proposed work. This summary must not exceed one page. 2. Introduction Please provide the physics motivation for the proposed experiment. Present the past [1] and current work on the topic, and how your proposed measurement will affect the understanding of the physics being addressed. The objectives of the experiment should be clearly stated and put in a sufficiently broad scientific context to convey the most important potential contribution of the proposed work. • If any of the spokespersons have conducted experiments at HIGS, the proposal text should give the status of the data analysis and publications; • If the physics goals of the proposed experiment are similar to those of an active or recently completed experiment at HIS, then text should compare the new work with the existing experimental results; • The proposal should describe how graduate students will be involved in the research and give details on how parts of the project might develop into thesis topics; • If the proposal includes collaborative work among multiple groups from within or external to an institution, please provide a description of the expected contribution from each group. Please also verify that all participants on the proposal have agreed to work on the project. 3. Experiment Description Please provide a detailed description of the proposed experimental setup. You should state the observables to be measured and give an estimate of the accuracy (statistical and systematic) to be obtained in the experiment for each observable. Sufficient technical details of the proposed experiment should be provided to enable assessment of the technical feasibility and resource requirements to execute the experiment. • The proposal must include a table that itemizes the main sources of errors (both statistical and systematic) and provides a rough estimate of their magnitudes; High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source – Proposal for a Nuclear Physics Experiment • The proposal should include information on when the collaboration will be ready to take data and how long after data-taking are results expected to be published. 4. Run Plan Please provide a tentative run plan. The plan should include count rate estimates at each experimental configuration, minimum useful flux, energy resolution, beam energies, etc. The beam-time estimates should not include contingency. The facility time request should include the following: • Experiments that require beam time spread over a period of several years should include a multiyear beam time request profile (in the run plan below) that spans the entire duration of the experiment; • equipment setup and alignment; • setup commissioning and instrumentation calibration without beam; • data collection with beam; • post-measurement calibrations without beam; • decommissioning (removal of equipment from beam line).
