1.7 A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Draw diagrams to help solve the following problems.
Example 1: Volume 1 and Volume 2 of a set of encyclopedias sit next to each other on a shelf with
1
volume 1 on the left and volume 2 on the right. Each front and back cover is 8 inch thick. The page
portion of volume 1 is 1 inch thick and the page portion of volume 2 is 2 inches thick. If an
inchworm starts at page 1 of volume 1 and burrows all the way through the last page of volume 2,
how far will she travel?
Example 2: In Reasonville, many streets are named after famous mathematicians. Streets that end in
an “s” run east-west. All other streets run either way. Wiles Street runs perpendicular to Germain
Street. Fermet Street runs parallel to Germain Street. Which direction does Fermet Street run?

Example 3: Five friends rode in a 50-mile bike race. Sue finished 25 minutes ahead of Ana. Ana
finished 40 minutes behind Mel. Mel finished 25 minutes ahead of Jing. Rosi finished 20 minutes
behind Jing. If Ana finished the race at 1:30 P.M., what time did each of the other girls finish?
Example 4: All the streets in Erik’s town run north-south or east-west. Erik walked 4 blocks east,
then turned left and walked 2 blocks. He turned left and walked 3 blocks, turned right and walked 5
blocks, and turned right and walked 2 blocks. Which direction was he facing during the last 2 blocks
of his walk? What is the north-south distance in blocks from his starting point to his stopping point?

Example 5: Oak Street and Maple Street are perpendicular to one another. Maya and Chris are
looking for their lost dog. Maya is on Oak Street, 50 meters north of the corner of Oak and Maple.
Chris is on Maple, 70 meters east of the corner. The dog is 60 meters from Maya and 50 meters from
