CLASS COPY – Please do not write on this sheet. Natural Selection Activities Record all responses on a sheet of LINED paper in complete sentences. Activity 1. The Evolution Experience: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/evolution/what-isevolution/natural-selection-game/the-evolution-experience.html 1. Make a table on your paper to record the following information during this activity: Round # # needed to survive # of bugs eaten # of bugs alive (after the round (look at graphic shown, scroll over shaded bugs) BLUE GREEN – look at the graphic shown, count colored bugs) BLUE GREEN 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 2. Answer: After playing 8 rounds, how does this show natural selection (what variation was there, what environmental pressure, and how did it change over time)? Activity 2. Peppered Moths. http://www.techapps.net/interactives/pepperMoths.swf 3. Read the information about “Peppered moth life cycle”. Write a summary (Discuss their habitat, what they have as predators and how they are adapted to survive this pressure). 4. Read the information about “Pollution and peppered moths.” Answer the question in one or more sentences – how did the peppered moth change, and why? 5. Go to “A bird’s eye view of natural selection.” What is the % of each moth color at the beginning? Do both trials. Create a data table to record your results for both scenarios, and write a sentence or two to explain why you think it happened. 6. For bonus, draw a picture (showing moth colors) of one or more of Kettlewell’s experiments, and write a sentence or more to explain what he did and what he learned. If time allows, you can work on the homework from earlier in the week, or continue with the bunny simulations at: http://phet.colorado.edu/simulations/sims.php?sim=Natural_Selection
