Sharma Submitted to Applied physics D Volume Number communicated Single Page Year 2012 Abstract Resonant excitation of terahertz (THz) radiation by beating of two plane wave laser beams in unmagnetized, periodic density modulated plasma is proposed. The high laser fields increase the velocity of plasma electrons close to the velocity of light due to which the mass of plasma electrons is increased by the relativistic factor γ. The resultant relativistic nonlinear velocity of electrons couples with the density ripple to produce a nonlinear current driving the THz radiation. The role of electromagnetic density ripple is to provide phase matching. A simple theoretical model for the THz electric field generation has been proposed which suggests that the present scheme may yield THz radiations with efficiency ~ 10 -3 using laser power less than 1015 watt/cm2.
