ORAL SURGERY PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS/ Evolve Surgical Arts Has an appointment on Patient’s Name at Date Arrival Time The following instructions are provided to help you understand and prepare for your upcoming surgery. This may not answer all of your questions regarding your upcoming surgery, so feel free to ask your Doctor or a member of his staff about any additional questions. General Instructions Make every effort possible to be on time for your appointment. If for some reason you are going to be late, please call and inform the office. Brush your teeth prior to your appointment, it is important to not swallow any water or toothpaste while brushing and rinsing. If you develop any illness or cold prior to your surgery date contact the office immediately. A change of your surgery date may be necessary. Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol for 24 hours prior to surgery. Stop taking Aspirin, Aleve, Excedrin, Vitamin E, and Fish Oil for 10 days prior to surgery, unless otherwise instructed. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your surgery appointment. It is important that you wear a short sleeved shirt or tank top so we are able to place the necessary monitors on you. Please remove all piercings and contact lenses. Avoid wearing colored nail polish, acrylic or false nails because it interferes with our oxygen monitoring devices. If they interfere we may remove the nail or reschedule the surgery after the nails have been removed. ____ Local Anesthesia (surgery with just numbing) – You may eat normally prior to your appointment. A driver is not necessary for this type of surgery. It is OK to drive yourself to this appointment. ____ Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) – You may not eat or drink anything starting 4 hours prior to your surgery appointment time. If your Doctor has prescribed medication for you to take prior surgery you may do so with a small sip of water. It is OK to drive yourself to and home from this appointment. ____ IV Anesthesia (asleep for surgery) – The night before surgery, eat a light, easily digestible meal. If you have taken any illicit (illegal) drugs 2 weeks prior to your surgery appointment, you must inform us immediately as these drugs may interfere with the anesthetic drugs or local anesthesia and may kill you. Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to your appointment (NO FOOD OR LIQUID). If you are instructed to take medications prior to coming in, take them with a very small sip of water. Make sure you wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes (short sleeve shirt or tank top). Women should avoid wearing their hair up in a ponytail or with any kind of barrette. You must have a responsible adult escort bring you to your surgery appointment. Your escort is required to remain in our office until it is time for you to go home. Your escort will be responsible for driving you home after your surgery and may need to assist with picking up your post-operative prescriptions. Public transportation (bus, taxi, etc.) is not allowed. IF YOU ARE A MINOR- YOUR PARENT OR LEGAL GUADIAN MUST BE YOUR DRIVER. They will need to review your consent form and sign it again on the day of surgery - No Exceptions. Someone must stay with you at home for at least the first 6 hours after surgery. You cannot drive or operate any vehicle for 24 hours after surgery under any circumstances. Medical Instructions-If for any reason the medications you have informed us of on your health history changed, inform us immediately. ___ If you have asthma, bring your inhaler with you on the day of surgery. ___ If you are diabetic, bring your glucometer with you on the day of surgery. ___ If you are under 18 take your Valium 1 hour prior to surgery with a small sip of water. If you are over the age of 18 you will need to review and re-sign your consent forms in the office prior to taking your Valium. No driving for 24 hours after taking Valium. ___ Take Phenergan 1 hour prior to surgery with a small sip of water. ___ Take 1 – 600mg Ibuprofen 30 minutes prior to surgery with a small sip of water. ___ Take Pre-Medications one hour prior to surgery with a small sip of water. Special Instructions: Recipe for Homemade Ice Packs- ¾ cold water, ¼ cold rubbing alcohol, 2 Ziploc bags. Place liquids into one bag, push out bubbles and zip it up. Place bag into the second bag, seal and freeze. You will get a bag of frozen slush that is perfect to use after surgery. Please ask your surgeon any questions you want regarding the anesthesia or surgical procedures planned for you. It is your right to know!
