TORQUAY GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION Contact via the School or via Kate Howitt, Chairman, on 07716 011795 Newsletter May 2010 TGGS ‘S GOT TALENT After 2 days of auditions, the judges managed to narrow down the competition to 15 acts to perform at the Grand Final held on the evening of Wednesday 31st March. With talent ranging from dance troupes, acting, belly dancing and singing, the finalists battled it out with each other to see who would win the coveted title of ‘TGGS Has Got Talent’. With a stage show reminiscent of the best of the televised talent contests, Head Girl Lottie Chapman with Alice James and Emma Pickering, compered the evening, ensuring the transitions between acts and the judging panel went smoothly. The judging panel did some acting of their own, with Mr Walker playing a starring role as a certain Mr Cowell, even attracting boos from the audiences as he ensured the acts were kept on their toes. Mrs Heathcote, Miss Davis and Mr Unwin, kept the comments more constructive and made sure the scoring was up to scratch. With the lead changing often as each act upped the ante, the final performer, Florence Dickinson, stepped into the spotlight with a heart pounding rendition of ‘Preacher Man’, to walk away with the £25 top prize and trophy. The Year 7 dance group, comprising, Charlotte Acheson, Chloe Binmore, Emily La Nauze, Gemma Li, Megan Shaw, Amber Bassett and Mae-Sing Lim-Cooke, claimed the second prize of £15 and trophy with their energetic routine to Cascada’s ‘Evacuate The Dancefloor’, whilst treating the audience to sweets thrown from the stage and an extremely becoming green wig! Jaime Behan took the ‘Sparkle’ prize of £10 and trophy for her bellydancing routine to round out the winners list. Many, many thanks have to go out to all the girls who took part in the auditions, all those who helped to set up and clear away afterwards, the many parents from the PTA and all the staff involved. The PTA would like to thank Mrs Horton and Mrs Payne for all their help in organising and running the event, and Nina Clarkson for the audio support. They would also like to thank the sponsors of the prizes for the evening, Showertech Southwest, A Generous Parent (keeping his light under a bushel, but we can’t thank him enough), and Arrowmek Consultants. Well done everyone for a fantastic event, raising £406 to go back to the school and most of all... TGGS REALLY DOES HAVE TALENT. Mufti Day Mufti Day was held on Friday May and was a huge success! Reports that everyone came to school in non- school uniform for the day to raise funds for the whole school, via the PTA. Total amount raised to be confirmed. Many thanks to all who helped organize the event and to the girls for taking part. 14th Next PTA EVENT We hope the next PTA event of a Car Boot Sale will be an even greater success than the Talent Show!
