ACTIVITIES American Sign Language for Beginners (6 students) Instructor: Renee Scott Thursdays 5:30PM to 6:30PM Collis 221 6 sessions: $35 per person Students who already have basic exposure to American Sign Language will practice conversing in both Signed English and American Sign Language, learn cultural idioms, and gain experience toward developing elementary proficiency. Become a Campus CEO (15 students) Instructor: Riley Ennis Mondays 7PM to 8:3PM Collis 212 6 sessions: $40 per person The number one place to start a company is in college. With ample resources, supportive professors, and a plethora of labor just about anybody can turn their post-it-note idea into a company. The whole process of establishing a company teaches you valuable networking skills, how to be passionate about your ideas, and how to organize your thoughts into a sellable and tangible business plan. In addition, making some extra money on the side and adding your business to your resume makes the whole process even better. This course will help you develop a business plan and get your company started. By the end of the course you will have a business model and an investor pitch that you can send down the road to Tuck or even to alums. DJing 101 (8 students) Instructor: Patrick Chen Thursdays 7PM to 8PM FUEL 6 sessions: $35 per person You’ve heard the names: Avicii, Tiesto, Pauly D. Even Lil Jon (Jonathan Mortimer Smith) started off as a DJ before rapping. DJing is a rewarding new art form. It’s spontaneous, innovative and fun. You will learn some history and current hot trends in the DJing industry. You will also gain an appreciation for the various technology/DJ equipment out there. We’ll cover a wide range of genres popular in the club scene: Top40, Hip-Hop, House, Electro, Baltimore Club. DJing is much more than a glorified playlist. Like any instrument, it requires practice and so tips will be given to how to improve even after these classes. Technical teaching will be towards beat matching, looping, set selection, usage of effects, transitions and other rules of thumb. This will be very hands on- students will take turns working with the turntable systems. Hair Braiding (10 students) Instructor: Zawadi Rowe Tuesday 7PM to 8PM Collis 212 5 sessions: $50 per person Learn how to do hair: part it, twist it, braid it, cornrow it, and possibly extend it. All levels of experience welcome. Do wish you could do your own hair? Or do you just want to know how it’s done? At the very least, parting, twisting, braiding, and cornrowing will be taught to anyone who is interested in learning. Based on the learning curve of the class, students may have the opportunity to learn how to do twists, braids, and cornrows with extensions. Immediate benefits upon successfully completing this course are also available (i.e. become one of the few Upper Valley hairbraiders who will more than likely always be in demand). Introduction to American Sign Language (6 students) Instructor: Renee Scott Mondays 3PM to 4PM Collis 221 6 sessions: $35 per person Students will learn the basics of American Sign Language (alphabet, elementary words and phrases, sentence structure). The course aims to have every student conversationally functional by the end of the course. The Life of Jesus (15 students) Instructors: Henry Waller and Jay Schulte Wednesdays 8PM to 9PM Collis 212 6 sessions: $15 per person This course will look at the teachings and actions of Jesus. It will pay attention to how his life and teachings relate to the human condition and the import of his life on history. It will address Jesus’ life from a traditional Christian perspective, as it is this conception of Jesus that has been the most important influence on the world in the past two millennia. The class will examine how Jesus inverted many of the values of his day and how his teachings relate to modern society. Nail Art (5 students) Instructor: Amber Lehman Thursdays 5PM to 6PM Collis 212 6 sessions: $50 per person An introduction to armature nail art that can be done at home without any previous experience or expensive salon equipment. Speed Reading (20 students) Instructor: Carl Thum April 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th 3PM to 4:15PM Collis 212 (April 9th, 10th, 12th), Collis 101 (April 11th) 4 classes: $35 per person This course will improve your reading rate and comprehension skills, as well as other study strategies for more effective and efficient academic learning. Spycraft 101 (8 students) Instructor: Ryan West Sundays 5:30PM to 7PM Collis 218 6 sessions: $30 per person Ever wanted to be James Bond? Or ARE you James Bond and feel like you’re a bit rusty lately when it comes to espionage? Curious on just how you escape from a room filling with nerve gas? A lot of the basic theories, techniques and practices that are the foundations of modern spying and some of the cooler tricks that you see featured in spy movies are going to be covered. You’ll learn about blending into any situation, how to conduct surveillance, what to do if you get captured and how to survive and escape. We will be doing a mixture of short classes, hands-on practice and at least one large exercise where you get a chance to test out what you’ve learned. StarCraft II (10 students) Instructors: Yufan Lin and Peter Spradling Thursdays 7:30PM to 9PM Collis 218 6 sessions: $35 per person An analytical and focused discussion of StarCraft II. Students will acquire the skills to enjoy playing and spectating the game on a deeper level. We will be discussing strategy specific to StarCraft II, such as reading and reacting to opponents’ build orders, as well as themes that are the basis of all real-time strategy games (RTS). In addition, some class time will be spent actually playing the game so it is highly recommended that everybody has their own laptop with the game pre-installed. Anybody interested in joining the CSL team next year are encouraged to sign up. ARTS Foreign Films and Food (12 students) Instructor: Lucy Zuraw Tuesdays 7PM to 9PM Collis 218 Take a trip around the world with me! Transport yourself to India, Mexico, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan through the power of delicious cuisine and a good movie. Watch engrossing, emotional, and exciting films while enjoying cuisine famous in the country the film was made in. Each class we will watch a different movie and eat specialty foods prepared to represent important cultural themes in the movie. After the movie is filmed, we will discuss our thoughts about the film and consult reviews written by critics. Recipes and instructions to make the food enjoyed in class will be provided to take home for your own personal enjoyment! Origami (10 students) Instructor: Angela Jin Thursdays 5PM to 6PM Collis 209 6 sessions: $30 per person This course will educate whoever’s interested in origami in the basic folds and techniques. We will create some staple origami pieces such as the crane, but after the first few classes students can pick projects they would like to attempt, as well as bring in outside origami schematics. All FOOD AND DRINK Art of Chinese Cooking (7 students) Instructor: William Chan Sundays 3PM to 5PM Location TBD 6 sessions: $80 per person This course will teach college students to make authentic Chinese food, from various stir-fries to made-from-scratch dumplings to full entrée dishes that include fish, seafood, and sautéed meats. Introductory Baking (10 students) Instructor: Elizabeth Winkle Wednesdays 7PM to 9PM Location TBD 6 sessions: $80 per person Learn to make (and experiment with) cookies, bread, cake, and pie from scratch. Mastering Specialty Cupcakes (6 students) Instructors: Alicia Kim and Alexandra Grant Sundays 3PM to 5PM McLane 1st floor kitchen 6 sessions: $80 per person Are you always drooling over the fancy cupcakes at King Arthur’s Flour? Well, why not learn how to make them on your own! This course will explore the magic of baking, filling and frosting cupcakes. You’ll have the opportunity to create some wonderful flavors including: Red velvet with cheesecake filling, Tiramisu, Margarita, Cherry coke, Mocha, Pumpkin and S'more. Bakers of all experience levels are welcomed. So come, learn, delight your taste buds and impress your friends! Panjiri Theory: Indian Cooking and Global Interdependence in the New Century (8 students) Instructor: Zachary Martinez Thursdays 5PM to 7PM Location TBD 6 sessions: $80 per person This hands-on cooking class will cover a variety of Indian dishes over the course of the term, with a subsidiary focus on issues surrounding the dishes being prepared. The dishes will provide an overview of staples of the north Indian diet, including largely vegetarian spiced legume and rice dishes, but will also touch on dairy and fish dishes and finally dessert and beverage. Class sessions will consist of short introductions to the dish, a primer on necessary skills (e.g. safe cutting board technique), group meal preparation led by the instructor, and finally, dinner. During meal preparation issues surrounding the dish will be presented and discussed. Issues could include background on the domestication and cultivation of key crops, exploration of the dish as a culturally evolved technology meeting complex human nutritional needs, and contemporary food security issues. Post-Modern Sichuan Cooking (10 students) Instructors: Yuxiang Zhou & Shiyu Xu Mondays 6PM to 8PM McLane 1st Floor Kitchen 6 sessions: $80 per person Sichuan is a province in southwest China, landlocked by Himalaya on the southwest and Qinling on the northeast. Various traditions in Sichuan exist in their very original form with the least influence from other civilizations. Sichuan cuisine is a good example, representing the most authentic and traditional style of Chinese cooking with an artful use of native spices and agricultural products. This course will introduce students to the basic concepts of Sichuan cooking and how to creatively use materials that are available in American supermarket to prepare an authentic Sichuan dinner. We will cook and eat a nice Sichuan dinner every week. Two instructors (Yuxiang Zhou and Shiyu Xu) are both natives from Sichuan, China. Southern Cooking (6 students) Instructor: Ashley Roland Tuesdays 7PM to 9PM Location TBD 6 sessions: $80 per person In this class, you will learn to cook southern and southern-inspired food for your family and friends. Ever wanted to know what grits are? How to make a killer pound cake? We will also talk about Southern history and culture a bit since food is such a big part of the culture. We can talk a bit about how to make Southern food healthier and/or more vegetarian friendly. Potential dishes include: fried chicken, shrimp and grits, biscuits, collard greens, pound cake, red velvet cake, pecan pie. HEALTH AND WELLNESS Dance Aerobix (20 students) Instructor: Madeline Sims Mondays and Wednesdays 5PM to 6PM Location TBD 6 sessions: $40 per person A high-energy dance class that won’t feel like a workout. The class will combine hip-hop moves, cardio exercises, and stretching set to up-beat music. Come to learn some new moves, get some exercise, or just for an hour of fun. Absolutely no dance experience needed! Dance: Stretch and Conditioning (15 students) Instructor: Kate Shelton Wednesdays 5PM to 6:15PM FUEL 6 sessions: $40 per person Dance: Stretch and Conditioning combines the cardio, strength training, and stretching that helps dancers achieve their strong, flexible physiques! Come workout, sweat, and have fun all at the same time. This class is perfect for both dancers and non-dancers alike: no dance experience required! Hip Hop Dance/Cardio (10 students) Instructor: Richard Stephenson Tuesdays and Thursday 4PM to 5:30PM Location TBD 12 sessions: $40 per person This course will explore the foundation of hip hop dancing. It will challenge dancers of all levels to get in touch with their inner performer while working up a sweat. The course will survey some of the most popular hip hop trends, such as the Dougie, and push participants to leave it all on the dance floor. Mindful Yoga (18 students) Instructor: Lucia Pohlman Saturdays 3PM to 4PM FUEL 6 sessions: $40 per person This yoga class will stress flow, body and mind awareness, and is based in the Vinyasana Flow tradition.
