F-1 students are responsible for reporting their address, their employer’s name and address, and any periods of unemployment
while on OPT. UTEP DSOs are responsible for updating the student’s SEVIS record every 6 months to reflect these changes. You
are required to report within 10 days of a new change and must validate your information every six months. The regulations
governing these reporting requirements are:
•
8 CFR 214.2(f)(12): “An F-1 student authorized by the Service to engage in practical training is required to report any change of name or
address, or interruption of such employment to the DSO for the duration of the authorized training. A DSO who recommends a student for optional
practical training is responsible for updating the student’s record to reflect these reported changes for the duration of time that training is authorized.”
•
8 CFR 214.2(f)(17): “A student must inform the DSO and the Service of any legal changes to his or her name or of any change of address,
within 10 days of the change, in a manner prescribed by the school.

OPT Statement of Understanding
Standard OPT Request
Optional Practical Training may be requested for a period of 12 months per level of study. If I am granted OPT
authorization, I am to seek employment related to the degree which I have just completed. I should work at least 21
hours or more each week.
While I am working on OPT, I understand that the U.S. federal government still considers me a student and that the
OPT is a work authorization for practical training which is granted to me through my F-1 student visa.
During the 12 months of employment authorization, I am allowed a maximum of 90 days of unemployment, accrued
cumulatively beginning April 8, 2008. If I am unemployed for longer than this, then I realize that I will lose my F-1
student status as well as the remaining portion of my OPT authorization.
I realize that I must report the name of my employer and my employer’s address to the UTEP Office of International
Programs. I am aware that the Office of International Programs must enter this information into my record in the
SEVIS database and that U.S. immigration officials will be able to view this information.
I also understand that if I change jobs, add additional jobs, or leave a job, I must report it to UTEP Office of
International Programs.
I realize that I must continue to report any changes in my residential and/ or mailing address to the UTEP Office of
International Programs within 10 days of the change in order to comply with federal regulations for non-immigrants
in the United States. I must also report any changes to my name.
By my signature, I have read the statement above and understand that these are my obligations for maintenance of
F-1 status while on OPT.
