Vocabulary Review Words
Week 1
Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Runoff,
Climate, Weather, Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, Delta
Condensation – the process of changing from a gas to a liquid
Evaporation – to change from a liquid to a gas (warm air rises
Precipitation - water that falls to Earth’s surface as rain ,snow, sleet, or hail.
Runoff – Overflow of water on the Earth’s surface. This water typically runs to the lowest point, eventually
making its way back to larger bodies of water.
Weather - The state of the atmosphere at a given time and place, with respect to variables such as
temperature, moisture, wind velocity, and barometric pressure
Climate – the general weather of an area over a long period of time
Weathering – the breaking down of Earth’s materials (chemical, biological, physical)
Delta – fan-shaped region formed by deposits of sediments found at the mouth of a river.
Erosion - the movement of weathered materials by water, wind, or ice
Deposition - the dropping off of bits of eroded rock
Study Ideas:
Draw a picture to illustrate
each word or a diagram that
shows how the words relate to
each other. Be sure to label
each vocabulary word.
Make flash cards for each
vocabulary word. Write the
word on the front and a
sentence using the word on the
back. Leave a blank where the
vocabulary word would go &
quiz yourself!
Have someone quiz you by
asking you the definition, you
provide the word OR they ask
you the word and you provide
the definition (this one is harder!)

Week 2
Atmosphere, Air Pressure Dense, Humidity, Winds, Drainage Basin, Elevation, Flood Plain, Deforestation
Atmosphere – the air that surrounds the Earth.
Air Pressure - the force put on a given area by the weight of the air above it.
Dense – to crowd together, hard to penetrate. Usually thought of as thick instead of hollow.
Humidity - water vapor or moisture in the air (typically making it feel warmer outside)
Wind -moving air, especially a natural movement of air parallel to or along the ground. 3 types (below).
Global – moving around the Earth
Local – moving in smaller
Trade – warm winds near the Equator
Drainage Basin - a system of rivers and streams that drains an area like the Colorado Plateau or Fall Lake.
Elevation - a vertical distance, or height, above sea level (the higher the elevation, the colder & less dense the air)
Flood Plain- land that is likely to be underwater during a flood, typically flat and on the edge of a body of water.
Deforestation – removing the trees from a forest through by clear cutting.

4. On a warm day, it is important to use a coaster because ___________________ makes my class sweat!
5. Falls Lake is the _________________________________ for the Neuse River system.
6. It takes years for the affects of ________________________ of the Earth by acid rain to cause damage.
7. My favorite type of _______________________________ is spring time rain.
8. I set my wet patio cushions in the sun, hoping _____________________________ would dry them out.
9. When the air is _______________________ my hair tends to get frizzy because all of the moisture.
10. When the __________________________ is high, it usually means dry weather and cool temperatures.

Atmosphere, Air Pressure Dense, Humidity, Winds, Drainage Basin, Elevation, Flood Plain, Deforestation
Week 3
Meteorologist ,Forecast , Cumulus, Cirrus, Status, Nimbus, Frontal Boundary, Convection, Meander, Mouth(river)
Meteorologist - One who studies meteorology, one who reports and forecasts weather conditions.
Forecast – a prediction of the upcoming weather. Meteorologists use weather tools to aid in this process.
Convection – the movement of warm air upwards, also known as an updraft.
Stratus Cloud – a cloud that forms in a blanket-like layer
Cumulus Cloud – a puffy, white cloud with a flat bottom, also called a fair-weather cloud
Cirrus Cloud – a high-altitude cloud, with featherlike shape, made of ice crystals.
Frontal Boundary – occurs when a warm air mass and a cold air mass meet. One air mass pushes out the
other. This is the boundaries that separate different air masses. The leading edge of a cold front replaces
warm air and the leading edge of a warm front replaces cold air.
Meander – bends or s-shaped curves in a river due to erosion.
Mouth – the point at which the river empties into a larger body of water. A delta often forms here.

Week 3 Quiz
Define 5 words, write a sentence for 5 words
Name:________________________
Word List
Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Runoff, Climate, Weather, Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, Delta
Atmosphere, Air Pressure Dense, Humidity, Winds, Drainage Basin, Elevation, Flood Plain, Deforestation
Meteorologist, Forecast, Cumulus, Cirrus, Status, Nimbus, Frontal Boundary, Convection, Meander, Mouth
Week 4
Altitude – the height or elevation of the land. Temperatures generally decrease, air becomes thinner, less
dense and wind speeds tend to increase.
Leeward – once the air reaches the top of the mountain, it begins to descend on the opposite side. As it
descends, it becomes warmer. This side of the mountain does not have much precipitation or vegetation.
Windward – Air ascends or rises on this side of a mountain, cools and condensing, causing precipitation. This
side is rich in vegetation.
Prevailing Westerlies – In the middle latititudes, (where the U.S. is located) winds move from west to east.
Seabreeze – Air flowing from the sea to the land. This often happens during the day because the land heats
up faster. As the warm air rises from the land, the cool air sinks and moves from the sea to replace it.
Landbreeze – air flowing from the land to the sea. This often happens at night because the land cools off
faster than the sea. The sea maintains its temperature longer. As the warm air rises over the sea, the cool air
sinks and moves from the land to replace it.
Slope – the incline or steepness of a surface
Topographic Map – shows the height or elevation of land in a two-dimensional way.
Contour Lines – lines that represent elevation on a topographic map, close lines = steep slope.

Week 5
Scale – relates distance on a map to the real distance on Earth’s surface.
Barometer – an instrument that measures air pressure
Troposphere – the layer of the atmosphere closest to Earth’s surface.
Valley - a low area between higher areas through which a river or stream often flows. When formed by a river
a valley is V-shaped and when formed by glacial erosion, valleys are often U-shaped.
Adaptation – a structure or behavior that helps an organism survive in its surroundings
Biotic – living thing, organism
Ecosystem - all the living and nonliving things that interact with each other in an environment
Decomposer – an organism that gets energy by feeding on dead materials and waste and gives nutrients back
to the soil.
Niche – the role of an organism in a community
Symbiotic Relationship – A close relationship between organisms living side-by-side
-Mutualism - Symbiotic relationships in which each species benefits
-Commensalism - "at table together", one organism consumes the unused food of another
-Parasitism - A parasite is an organism that lives on or in the body of another organism (the host), gets
its nourishment, and to whom it does some damage
