URI SUMMER PROGRAM IN ITALY 2016 STUDY MUSIC AND ITALIAN IN CALABRIA & PUGLIA Dates: June 24-July 23, 2016 Optional Trip to Rome - Dates: July 24-28, 2016 Application deadline: May 1, 2016 A Summer In Italy You Will Never Forget! Locations: Calabria is located in the Southern tip of Italy and boast unforgettable vistas across magnificent beaches with crystal clear water and rugged mountains; ancient Greek and Roman ruins; Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque towns; Byzantine and Norman churches. Students will also visit Matera (Basilicata), Lecce, Otranto and the Salento area in Puglia. Possible activities for students who will take the music courses: In Cosenza, Calabria: visit of Teatro Alfonso Rendano, Villa Rendano, Conservatory and shops of luthiers; visit of Teatro Auditorium at the University of Calabria. In Otranto, Puglia: participation in the Masters Classes for piano held by Maestro Aquiles Delle Vigne, with the assistance of Daniela Roma (for further information visit www.derada.com); Classical Music Concert held by Maestro Manabu Takasawa and Daniela Roma. In Rome: Visit of Santa Cecilia Academy & the Opera Theater. Possible viewing of classical, jazz, opera and folk music concerts. General Education Course taught in English by Professor Manabu Takasawa, with the assistance of Daniela Roma): Fosters a better understanding and appreciation of the world’s great music. Consideration of musical styles, techniques, and forms from the listener’s standpoint. MUS 111 Basic Musicianship (3 credits. General Education Course taught in English by Professor Manabu Takasawa, with the assistance of Daniela Roma): Use of folk, classical, and popular music to learn essentials of music reading and music theory. MUS 408 The Opera (3 credits. Course taught in English by Professor Manabu Takasawa, with the assistance of Daniela Roma): History of opera from its beginnings in Italy in the 17th century to the present, including works by composers such as Monteverdi, Rossini, Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini. Pre: credit or concurrent enrollment in MUS 222 or the ability to read music. MUS 490 Independent Study (1-3 credits. Course taught in English by Professor Manabu Takasawa): Preparation of a project under the guidance of a member of the appropriate faculty. Pre: acceptance by faculty member who will be the project advisor and approval of chairperson. May be repeated for credit.
