University Museums Announces Programs and Events for
Winter and Spring 2010
Ames, IA- The University Museums at Iowa State University announces its upcoming programs
and events, in association with the Winter and Spring 2010 exhibitions at the Brunnier Art
Museum, Christian Petersen Art Museum, Farm House Museum, Anderson Sculpture Garden
and the Art on Campus program.
All events are subject to change. For the most current updates, please visit the museums’
website at www.museums.iastate.edu.
Admission to exhibitions and events are free (unless otherwise noted) and open to the public
however there is a suggested donation of $3 per visitor.

Sunday, January 17 at 2:00 pm in the Brunnier Art Museum, 295 Scheman Building
Gallery Walk – N.C. Wyeth’s America in the Making Series
N.C. Wyeth, nationally acclaimed illustrator and artist, created thousands of images for popular
media. How much do you know about the man behind the illustrations? Join Amanda Hall on a
gallery walk of America in the Making to view significant works of art by the artist and learn
something of the fascinating private life of the Wyeth family.

ReLationships: Embodiment – Exhibition Reception
Dean Michael Whiteford, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, along with the faculty in Integrated
Studio Arts invite you to join them in celebrating the exhibition ReLationShips: Embodiment at
the Brunnier Art Museum. Enjoy refreshments, conversation, and a brief program at 5:15pm with
remarks from Dr. Michael Whiteford, College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez, Art and Design
Chair Roger Baer, and guest curator Ingrid Lilligren.

Let There Be Light – Film
Let There Be Light is the final entry in a trilogy of films produced for the U.S. government by John
Huston. The film was controversial in its extremely effective portrayal of shell-shocked soldiers
from the war, and it was subsequently banned after its release despite the fact that the movie was
commissioned by the US Army itself. This documentary film follows life after war for 75 U.S.
soldiers, while exploring the concept of trauma in the U.S. after World War II.

Campus and community join Elizabeth Hoffman, Executive Vice President and Provost, and
many of Iowa State’s college deans for an exhibition reception starting the spring semester. View
the contemporary exhibition Exquisite Balance: Paintings and Maquettes by Bill Barrett and a
historic exhibition All the Evils: Christian Petersen and the Art of War. Also at this event will be the
dedication of two recent gifts of sculpture to the permanent collection by artists Manuel Neri and
August Rodin!

Join Jennifer Drinkwater, lecturer in Art and Design, and Richard Mansbach, professor in Political
Science, as they discuss the relationships between visual imagery and issues of cultural, political,
and global identity.

ArtWalk – New Sites & Old Favorites
Join Nancy Gebhart, educator of visual literacy and learning, as she takes you on a tour of new
sites and old favorites from the Art on Campus Collection. This tour will begin with some of the
old favorites in Parks Library, including public works of art by Grant Wood, Christian Petersen,
Doug Shelton, Stephen DeStaebler, and Nina de Creeft Ward. Visual literacy has proven to
increase communication and critical thinking skills, so why not spend your lunch learning with
University Museums! Meet Nancy inside the south entrance of Parks Library.

Bill Barrett, Sculptor – Film
Bill Barrett’s works of art are celebrated as lyrical abstractions – their delicacy of expression and
mastery of technique combine to produce a poetic kind of sculpture and painting. – M. Jessica

This film will provide you with new insights in to the process of creating sculpture and the vision
that drives the artist, Bill Barrett.

Constructivism, Learning, Humor, & Art – What do they have in common?
We construct knowledge based on experience and what we know about the world. If someone
presents us with something unusual, different, or novel, we have to construct what that means.
Please join us for an evening of laughter and learning with Michael Stanley, lecturer in Art and
Design, and Patricia M. Carlson, associate professor in Curriculum and Instruction, as they
explore the relationship between constructivism, learning, humor, and art.

Brunnier Bash: A Masquerade Ball
Bring your friends to the Brunnier’s fifth annual Brunnier Bash! Pull out those masquerade
masks, put on your dancing shoes, and join us for a night of intrigue in the most elegant of
settings, the Brunnier Art Museum. This event is ticketed. Tickets are $8 per person and $15 per
couple in advance, or $10 per person at the door. University Museums’ members receive a
discounted ticket price of $5 per person. Tickets may be purchased in advance beginning Feb.
1st at the Brunnier Art Museum, the Christian Petersen Art Museum, the Farm House Museum, or
the University Museums office.

Wasting Away: Conservation in the 21st Century
Even though Jay N. “Ding” Darling has been gone for nearly 50 years, his message is still as
appropriate and timely today as it was during his lifetime. His works of art lend a visual
understanding to the ideas of conservation and environmental thinking. Please join in the
discussion as our panel celebrates the accomplishments of Darling and examines his message
for the 21st century. The panelists are Jim Pease, retired professor in Natural Resource Ecology
and Management, Steve Lekwa, director for the Story County Conservation Board, Erv Klaas,
former leader of Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and Brian Duffy, editorial
cartoonist.

Show & Tell: Prints from the Collection of a Contemporary Printmaker
Join April Katz, associate professor in Art and Design as she discusses the visual qualities
related to the different techniques of printmaking as well as the varied conceptual underpinnings
of printmaking in general. April will be sharing her extensive collection of contemporary prints
taken from exchange portfolios that she participated in with significant printmakers and artists
from across the United States.

Final Friday – Brunnier in Bloom Opening Night
Be among the first to experience Brunnier in Bloom, the University Museums’ annual pairing of
beautiful art and fabulous flowers. This event showcases the talents of Ames-area floral
designers and garden clubs as they are challenged to create arrangements inspired by works of
art in the Museums’ permanent collection. On opening night you will be able to participate in a
silent auction and raffle for fabulous prizes, and you will be the first to hear who the judges
choose as this year’s winners. This Final Friday is free and open to the public, so bring your
family and friends to this celebration of spring!

Celebrate spring and the current exhibitions during Brunnier in Bloom, the Museum's annual

on Campus Collection. This tour will focus on one of the newest additions to the collection, A
Celebration of the Iowa Prairie by Sticks in the new Maple, Willow, Larch Dining Center. The tour
will also explore other public works of art in Maple Hall. Visual literacy has proven to increase
communication and critical thinking skills, so why not spend your lunch learning with University
Museums! Meet Amanda inside the west entrance of Maple Hall.

Artist’s Showcase
All are welcome to a forum for local artists interested in sharing their works of art – finished and
unfinished, traditional and non-traditional media – with other artists and the larger Ames
community. Consider Artist’s Showcase an open-mic night for visual artists. Each artist receives
up to 10 minutes to show their work and engage in a question and answer session, creating a
way to not only show, tell, and see what’s new but also a way to grow in a collaborative
atmosphere. Ingrid Lilligren, artist and Professor in Art and Design at Iowa State, will be the
evening’s guest critic. Anyone interested in critique is invited to attend. If you are interested in
sharing your artwork, please e-mail nancyg@iastate.edu to secure a time slot.

Inside the Artist’s Studio with Jennifer Drinkwater
Jennifer Drinkwater, lecturer in Art and Design, will provide a first-hand account of an artist’s
journey through the worlds of subject matter and interpretation, and will give her audience a
unique look into the life and creative process of an artist.

Gallery Walk – Polyphonic Abstraction
Take this opportunity to join University Museums director Lynette Pohlman, for an in-depth look at
the exhibition Polyphonic Abstraction: Paintings and Maquettes by Bill Barrett, and enhance your
experience by hearing new information about the works of art you see. This gallery walk will also
include Bill Barrett’s sculptures currently on view in the Elizabeth and Byron Anderson Sculpture
Garden.

A Walk in the Woods – Different Perspectives to a Common Experience
The artwork of C. Arthur Croyle, Associate Professor in Art and Design, is a creative response to
each new environment and situation, and the research of Lynn Clark, Professor in Ecology,
Evolution, and Organismal Biology, often incorporates field work in the Latin American jungles.
An artist and a botanist will compare and contrast their experience with observation based
research and discovery by sharing their different perspectives to a common experience.

Printmakers in Paradise: Japanese Landscape and Woodblock Prints
Ivan Hanthorn presents a program that sheds light on the landscape and garden scene tradition
in Japanese woodblock prints of the 19th and 20th centuries, noting continuing relevance to
contemporary aficionados of Japanese gardening and bonsai. Collecting and care of Japanese
prints will also be addressed.

Museums have a partnership which has enhanced one of the best campus glass collections in

journey through early American pattern glass.

Admission and Hours:
The Brunnier Art Museum is located on the second floor of the Scheman Building. Admission is
free, however there is a suggested donation of $3 per visitor. The Brunnier Art Museum’s regular
hours are as follows: Tuesday through Friday from 11:00am to 4:00pm, Saturday and Sunday
from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The Brunnier Art Museum is closed on Mondays and University
holidays.
The Christian Petersen Art Museum is located on the ground and first floors of Morrill Hall on
central campus. Admission is free, however there is a suggested donation of $3 per visitor. The
Christian Petersen Art Museum regular hours are as follows: Monday through Friday from
11:00am to 4:00pm. The Christian Petersen Art Museum is closed weekends and during
University breaks and holidays.
The Farm House Museum is located on Farm House Lane on central campus. Admission is free,
however there is a suggested donation of $3 per visitor. The Farm House Museum regular hours
are as follows: Monday through Friday from Noon to 4:00pm. The Farm House Museum is closed
weekends and during University breaks and holidays.
The Anderson Sculpture Garden is located south of Morrill Hall on central campus. The Art on
Campus Collection is located in buildings, courtyards, and common spaces across campus.
Admission is free. Hours may vary by building, outdoor sculpture available 24/7.
