Solution Preparation
Part I. Solution from solid
You are to prepare ____________ mL of __________ M
__________________ solution.
Step 1. Determine the number of grams of the compound you will need. Show work below.
Step 2. Mass out sample into weighing boat (don’t forget to tare balance).
Step 3. Obtain proper size volumetric flask.
Step 4. Carefully pour solid from weighing boat into volumetric. You may want to do this over
a paper towel in case you spill.
Step 5. Add a small amount of dH2O to weighing boat and pour into volumetric.
Step 6. Fill volumetric about 1/3 way with dH2O and swirl to mix.
Step 7. Fill to line with dH2O (bottom on meniscus on line). Use a pipet if you are worried
about overfilling.
Step 8. Cover with a small piece of parafilm.
Step 9. Invert several times to mix.
Step 10. Create a label with your period, initials, today’s date, concentration and chemical
formula.
Part 2. Diluting an acid – ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER!
You are to prepare ____________ mL of __________ M
___________ M as your starting concentration.
__________________ solution using
Step 1. Determine the number of milliliters of the acid you will need. Show work below.
Step 2. Obtain proper size volumetric flask.
Step 3. Using a graduated cylinder, fill volumetric with about 2/3 of water volume you will
need.
Step 4. Using a different graduated cylinder, measure out the amount of acid you will need.
Step 5. Carefully add the acid to the water in the volumetric flask.
Step 6. Mix thoroughly.
Step 7. Fill to line with dH2O (bottom on meniscus on line). Use a pipet if you are worried
about overfilling.
Step 8. Cover with a small piece of parafilm.
Step 9. Invert several times to mix.
