Unfortunately its that time of year when we again must be on the look out for ticks on our pets. The paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) is the single most dangerous parasite for dogs and cats on the eastern coast of Australia. They are most commonly seen between the months of August and February on the Gold Coast and are usually found in bushy areas although have been known to hang about the suburban back yard. Keeping your grasses short with regular mowing and cutting back shrubs and lose branches can help deter the paralysis tick from living at your place. Regardless of where you live it is still important to search your pet for possible ticks at this time of year. It is also essential to keep a look out for signs that your pet may be suffering from tick paralysis. If you do find a tick, remove it as soon as possible and bring your pet to see us at the clinic Check your pets daily for ticks and use tick prevention products such as Advantix® or Frontline® (remember to apply topical treatments once a fortnight for tick prevention) It is also important to remember that tick prevention products are not 100% effective so your best line of defense is daily tick searches. Ticks can be found anywhere on the body but more commonly from the neck forward, including lips and ears. Symptoms of tick paralysis usually take 3-4 days to appear. Common symptoms of tick paralysis include: Gagging Vomiting Coughing Wobbly legs (often described as a “drunk” stagger) Inability to stand If your pet has had a tick and starts to display these signs, bring them to the surgery immediately Hinterland Veterinary Surgery 21 Station Street Nerang PH: 5578 1099 Operating Hours: 8.00am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday 8.00am to 12.00pm Saturday HINTERLAND VETERINARY SURGERY NEWSLETTER JULY – SEPTEMBER 2011 www.hintvet.com.au Email reminders up and running! Hinterland Veterinary Surgery 21 Station Street Nerang PH: 5578 1099 If a cat or dog is found without its registration tag, having a microchip will mean that the cat or dog will still be able to be returned to you. A microchip is your pet's permanent form of identification. The tiny chip (about the size of a small grain of rice) contains a unique identification number that is linked to your address and contact information on a national integrated registry. A microchip is simply and easily injected beneath the skin by your veterinarian - just like a vaccination. The process is completed in seconds, does not require an anaesthetic, and the chip then stays with your pet for its lifetime. Remember to tell your microchip registry if your contact details change so that the information they hold about your animals is kept up-to-date. The TROVAN microchips used by us at Hinterland Veterinary Surgery are recorded with the Central Animal Records, a national registry accredited by Domestic Animal Registries Inc. - the registry watchdog. For more information visit the Central Animal Records at www.car.com.au or the Queensland Government at www.dip.qld.gov.au/catsanddogs Operating Hours: 8.00am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday 8.00am to 12.00pm Saturday
