Scope This Policy applies to all College staff (including temporary staff), visitors, contractors and students of the College and to those using the College’s IT resources. This policy forms part of the regulations governing use of the College’s IT facilities. At times these policies overlap and complement each other. This means that the proper use of the internet will be informed not only by the guidelines below but also by a range of other documents. These include, but are not limited to, the following: 2. Limited personal use may be allowed as a privilege, not a right. Use of Internet is monitored for security and/network management reasons. Users may also be subject to limitations on their use of such resources through content or service filtering The distribution of any information through the College’s network is subject to the scrutiny of the College. The College reserves the right to determine the suitability of this information. The use of computing resources is subject to UK law and any illegal use will be dealt with appropriately. Restrictions College IT facilities must not be used for, or in connection with, the following activities, many of which could result in college disciplinary action, legal action or civil proceedings being initiated: Page | 1 deliberately accessing, creating or transmitting any obscene or indecent images, data or other material, or any data capable of being resolved into obscene or indecent images or material; creating or transmitting material which is designed or likely to cause offence, annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another; creating or transmitting defamatory material or material that is libellous of any other person’s or company’s reputation, products or services; viewing, transmitting, copying, downloading or producing material, including (but not exhaustively) software, films, television programmes, music, electronic documents and books which infringes the copyright of another person, or organisation; making offensive or derogatory remarks about staff, students or the College on interactive social networking websites such as Facebook; Sussex Downs College 4. Internet Policy posting offensive, obscene or derogatory photographs, images, commentary or soundtracks on interactive social networking websites such as Facebook and YouTube; transmitting or producing material which breaches confidentiality undertakings; attempting to gain deliberate access to facilities or services which you are unauthorised to access; deliberately undertaking activities that corrupt or destroy other users' data; disrupt the work of other users, or deny network resources to them; violate the privacy of other users; waste staff effort or networked resources; creating or transmitting unsolicited commercial or advertising material unless that material is part of a service to which recipients have chosen to subscribe; making commitments via the Internet on behalf of the College without full authority; undertaking any activities detrimental to the reputation or business interests of the College; deliberately contributing to ‘news groups’ or web sites that advocate illegal activity; Responsibilities Any user who inadvertently accesses an inappropriate Internet site must immediately close the session or return to the previous page. Those who use College computing resources to make purchases, pay bills or conduct on-line banking or similar activities do so at their own risk.
