The MERLOT learning objects enhance and support Introduction to Spanish 1. When a student begins to learn a new language, he or she must immerse him or herself in it through speaking, listening, viewing, reading and writing. In the topics I chose to match with the learning objects, I chose videos, podcasts, a web quest, graphic organizers and creating a PowerPoint that utilizes multimedia to enhance and support skills. These objects can be used in other disciplines as well. I chose to focus on Las Vacaciones as the topic and the classic award for the graphic organizer which would be the brochure template. To create a travel brochure, the student would need access to Microsoft Publisher or any software that provides a basic brochure template; they would also need images from Microsoft Clip Art or Google Images. The student would choose a country where Spanish is a native language and conduct basic research on places to visit, where to eat, where to shop, what to bring on the trip and interesting facts. They must then create a brochure based on the information that they gathered. They must advertise the place to make it appealing to a traveler and contain enough basic information. A website which links to a web quest is provided in the Table of Learning Objects and also provided is a website that features several Spanish speaking countries from which to choose and more specific information about them. To access the web quest from here click http://www.nevada.edu/~brunelle/travelexperts.html. The web quest contains essential questions, an opportunity for students to gather data, interpret the information, develop a conclusion, discuss implications, communicate with peers and show results of the activity by either choosing to do a PowerPoint or by creating a brochure. The scaffold provided is procedural because there are steps in the process in the web quest as well as in the completion of the final product. Upon conducting research on a country where Spanish is spoken, the students would organize their information, gather their graphics which would support the text and place them in the template. The graphic organizer would aid the student in creating an effective presentation and show what they have learned. Reflective Essay In my development of the critical thinking activity, I explored the Merlot Learning Objects and related them to McGraw-Hill Learning Solutions. At first, it was a bit confusing to navigate the MERLOT site but once I found a topic of interest, I was able to find objects to relate to the topics. I thought the critical thinking activities were well developed and what I liked best was the use of multimedia objects. I liked that there were videos and podcasts available for students who were learning the Spanish language. They could watch and then practice. The use of the video is important because the student can hear the proper pronunciation of words and view the presentation of the speaker. The videos were authentic because many of them were done by native speakers in real life context and there were many choices available for practice. Recommendations and Conclusion I would recommend that alternative solutions for critical thinking are given for a specific learning objective. I also recommend that a complete list of learning objects be provided since they can be applied to multiple disciplines. This would create easy access and save time searching in different places. The learning objects associated with the specific learning objects were well developed and could be applied universally. They involve the use of critical thinking which is necessary for academic and personal growth. For an instructor it saves time and is a vehicle for creating worthwhile and authentic assignments for students. For students, it is enriching and engaging. The learning objects support and enhance learning. Table of Learning Objects Name: Stephanie Jackson Course Title: Introductory Spanish 1 Topic from McGraw-Hill Course 1.
