25k lottery windfall to boost international conservation
A £25,000 award will boost Scottish scientists’ race against time to tackle plant extinctions
around the globe after the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) was named as one of
63 charities to receive an extra Impact Award from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
The extra funding will help develop the impact of RBGE scientists in understanding the
global threats caused by destruction of natural habitats. In particular, it will support the
mapping of species, research into threatened plants, as well as the DNA bar-coding of plants
to measure the impact of climate change and improve conservation policy and biodiversity
around the world.
The organisation has now received over half a million pounds from players of People’s
Postcode Lottery since 2011 to help in its mission to explore, conserve and explain the world
of plants for a better future.
Regius Keeper Simon Milne MBE said the significance of such support should not be
underestimated: “One fifth of the world’s plants are threatened with extinction and over
70,000 flowering plant species are still thought to await discovery and description. Funding
from players of People’s Postcode Lottery has transformed the Botanics for our visitors,
through such initiatives as the Edible Gardening Project. Now, it will enrich the influence of
our conservation work at home and abroad. We don’t know if the plants we lose today hold
the secrets of life tomorrow but - with this extra funding from players of People’s Postcode
Lottery - we’ll be able to do even more to sustain the natural systems upon which all life
depends.”
The additional funding comes at an exciting time for the charity lottery as it marks 10 years
since the first ever draw. The last decade has created thousands of lucky winners and
provided vital funding from numerous charities across Great Britain and internationally. With
27.5% awarded to charities from every £2 ticket, its players have raised more than £82
million.
Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, commented: “It is fantastic
news that players are able to support wonderful charities such as the Royal Botanic Garden
Edinburgh with an extra £25,000 on top of its initial funding. In total, an amazing £1.575
million is being awarded in this tranche. We are very proud that our players can continue to
support the development of such fantastic causes.”
