HELPFUL ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR HOMES Courtesy of my best friends mom who is a real estate agent and helped people after the Oakland Fire years ago. "Here are a few tips for people trying to cope with losses from the fires: 1. Call your insurance company as soon as possible so they can initiate a claim case immediately, even if you don't know the exact status of your property. If you lost vehicles, make sure you contact your auto insurer as well. 2. Get the name of the person you talk to each time & make notes of what they say. 3. Ask lots of questions as often as you need to do so. Get a copy of your policy (online?) and ask them to explain it. (as many times as necessary). 4. Make sure you understand benefits you could use right away, such as replacement housing, both temporary (motels) & longer term (rentals) & ask how the payment system works. 5. Don't rush to any final settlement figure. It may take months or even longer to know all your options (e.g. how does it work if you do not want to rebuild?) 6. Ask what kinds of documentation you will need for temporary housing, personal property losses etc. Can you use money from different categories for other things (e.g. personal property payments for construction improvements on the rebuild)? 7. Don't forget other resources such as Red Cross (vouchers for motels etc.), government programs (FEMA), churches & other charities. Don't be shy about asking - people want to help! 8. Depending on your insurance company's rules, be sure to take enough time to remember every item you lost (can of soup, ball of twine, roll of toilet paper). Ask if itemizing your losses can result in a higher payment than just the percentage they normally allow. 9. You've been through a trauma - take enough time, ask enough questions, get lots of advice from lots of sources so you can sort out what's best for you. Set up an interactive website with your friends & neighbors & collect new contact information so you can all benefit from things you learn (resources, negotiation tips, etc.) Find out who else in your area has the same insurance company - there's strength in numbers! Up-to-date shelter information can be found at the Lake County OES Facebook Page ( www.facebook.com/LakeCountyOES ) and at the Lake County LAC Web page at www.lakecountylac.com
