This document provides potential items for evaluating campus offices, services, programs, events, facilities, processes, websites, and dining. We encourage departments to choose the questions which are most relevant to their initiatives.
We are able to provide guidance throughout the research process. This includes tasks such as choosing a research method, developing a timeline, designing evaluations, processing an Institutional Review
Board application, collecting and analyzing data, and disseminating results. We are also able to merge demographic and academic data into departmental data sets, if needed.
A note about evaluation.
Evaluations are only one type of research method. Other research methods include surveys, observations, focus group interviews, one-on-one interviews, and analysis of existing data.
Evaluations will not adequately answer all research questions and should only be used when appropriate. In terms of length, evaluations should be as short as possible while still answering those questions that are most important to you.
A note about demographic and academic information.
Almost always, an evaluation should ask for the participants ’ CampusID (abc123) or EmplID (7 digits). Some of the software programs at
CWRU collect this information when the participant opens the survey. If this information is collected, demographic and academic information (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, citizenship, school, major, class standing, age, GPA, credit hours, etc.) can be added once data collection is completed. Please do not ask demographic questions on evaluations.
A note about evaluating learning.
It is beneficial to include both IR and Susan Perry, University
Director of Outcome Assessment, in discussions related to assessing learning. Susan can be reached by e-mailing assessment@case.edu
.
A note about evaluating facilities.
Both evaluations and formal observations can be used to measure the quality of facilities. Neither option is better than the other. However, one option may be more practical than the other, depending on specific circumstances (e.g., availability of funding, time, staff, etc.).
A note about open-ended questions.
Responses to open-ended questions can be useful for marketing purposes and for understanding issues that cannot be addressed directly through quantitative questions. However, it is much more difficult and time consuming to analyze qualitative data. Specific research techniques exist to analyze qualitative data that may require additional training.
Qualitative data can be collected in a variety of ways, and surveying is not always the best way to collect this data. As a general rule, open-ended questions should be specific and avoided if time for analysis is limited.
