Third Annual Martin Luther King Day Weekend First Coast Trail Forgers Walking Club FERNANDINA BEACH, FL - 6 WALKS OVER 4 DAYS DATES: Friday, January 15, 2016 – Monday, January 18, 2016 We have sanctioned three walks in the Fernandina Beach, FL Area for the weekend of January 15 through January 18, 2016: one in American Beach, one at Ft. Clinch and one on the Amelia Island Hike/bike Trail which crosses the Crady Fishing Bridge. In addition we have 3 Year Round Events in Fernandina Beach. We have a block of 20 rooms at this time, so we suggest you go ahead and make your reservations now to assure that you get the special rate. FRIDAY AFTERNOON TROLLEY TOUR: Meet at the corner of Front and Centre Sts. at the Marina, Fernandina Beach at 2:45 pm. 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm: We have arranged for a 2 hour guided historic tour of the Fernandina area on a trolley. The cost per person will be $15. To have this tour, we will need a minimum of 25 to sign up and pay by December 15, 2015. The maximum we can accommodate is 36. You can do this with your preregistration or separately. If we don’t have the minimum, your money will be refunded. The tour is scheduled later in the afternoon so that you would have time to walk a 5K or 10K Friday before the tour. MEALS: Friday evening, 6 – 9 pm: Join us for light/medium snacks in the meeting room off the lobby of the Days Inn. Bring your own beverage of choice. You may also preregister Friday evening and/or stamp books. Saturday lunch, 11:30am – 1:00 pm: We will be having lunch at Sandy Bottoms http://www.sandybottomsamelia.com at 2910 Atlantic Ave. in Fernandina Beach. We will need a head count to give to the restaurant. So please RSVP on your preregistration form or to Kristin or Diana by January 2, 2016. You will be able to order off the menu and separate checks will be available. The restaurant is located at the start point for the afternoon group walk. No other meals have been planned. It offers historic architecture, beaches, marshes, a lighthouse, a historic fort and nature trails. The six walks we have scheduled vary greatly in character and will give you the opportunity to see the great diversity this area offers. STIPULATIONS: The events are free to non-credit walkers, open to everyone, and take place regardless of weather conditions. No refunds are provided after the start of the walk. PRE REGISTRATION AND REGISTRATION PROCEDURE: All walkers must register for a walk before they walk it. We encourage preregistration (see waiver and registration form). If not preregistered, you may sign up for any or all walks on Friday night or Saturday morning at our hotel. After that, all unregistered walkers will sign up for non YRE walks at the group walk start point ½ hour before that group walk begins. At the group walks you can only register for that walk. Egan’s Creek Greenway – Group Walk: 1/15/16 – register at 11:30 am – walk at 12:00 noon The Greenway Walk on Amelia Island is truly a unique walk along the Egan's Creek Greenway. As you stroll along the greenway you will see a variety of wildlife from birds to armadillos. In addition you will notice many kinds of flora. Muddy conditions may be possible if heavy rains precede this event; plan accordingly. Restrooms are available at the Start Point and along the route. American Beach Historic Area – Group walk: 1/16/16 – register 8:30 am , walk at 9 am. AL Lewis, an African American insurance executive purchased 216 acres of beachfront property in 1935. From that time until the early 1960s, American Beach became a mecca for African-Americans. At the time it was the rare beach resort at which African Americans were welcome. People came from across the South for the sun, surf, sand, balmy ocean breezes and the world class entertainment acts such as Duke Ellington. Several factors led to the decline in the area includding Hurricane Dora and the signing of the Civil Rights Act. Today the history of the area is preserved in the American Beach Museum. NaNa, the tallest sand dune in FL is also located in American Beach. Restrooms available at Start Point and along route. Trail Rating: 1A or 1C. The middle of the route you will walk through a beautiful canopy of trees passing the historic Light House. Restrooms available at Start Point. George Crady Pier Fishing Bridge – Group walk: 1/17/16 – register at 8:30 am, walk at 9:00 am This trail first goes across a one mile long fishing bridge over Nassau sound and then continues into Amelia Island State Park. After a beach walk, the route then goes along a hike/bike trail and back over the bridge to the Start Point. The beach walk is only doable at low tide, so if the tide isn’t low, or a walker prefers not to walk on the beach an alternative route along the hike/bike path is provided. The bridge is located 8 miles south of Fernandina Beach. Restrooms are not available at the Start Point, but are available along the route. Fees: There is a $2 fee per car for entrance to the parking lot payable in an honor box in the parking area. Exact change is required. The address of the bridge is 9000 Heckscher Dr., Fernandina Beach, FL. This address will get you close with your GPS but you will still need to look for the parking area to the south of the bridge. Historic Downtown Fernandina – Group Walk 1/17/16 – Register at 1:00 am, walk at 1:30 pm The city’s historic district on Amelia Island will captivate you with its variety of architectural styles. You’ll pass part of the Victorian District, wonder at the many varied and inviting Bed/Breakfast establishments and delight in the proliferation of quaint stores and restaurants on Centre St. Restrooms available at Start Point. Ft. Clinch State Park – Group Walk: 1/18/16 – register at 8:30 am, walk at 9:00 am. Ft. Clinch is located at the mouth of the St. Mary’s River in Fernandina Beach. The park is 1400 acres and contains 3 miles of shorelines. The fort itself was built in the 19th century. Our walk will follow nature trails through the park and a walk on the beach. A wide variety of wildlife lives throughout the park. If you desire, you can walk through the fort before or after the walk. Restrooms are available at the Start Point. Fees: $6 per vehicle (6-8 people), $4 single occupancy vehicle. There is an additional $2 per person admission fee to the fort.
