ICDL 2013 Theme: Information Storage & Retrieval An Ontological Semantic Approach Towards the Diseases of Blood, Heart and Circulation: A Prototype Model Abhijit Dasgupta Library (NKRC Affairs) Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) (under Dept. of Science and Technology, G O I) Jadavpur, Kolkata – 700032 Abstract: The knowledge driven society has not only metamorphosed the very character of the information needs simultaneously it has changed the quantitative as well as qualitative character of processed information specially in the S & T sectors. The multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary approaches of the specialized users have a deep impact on the recall and precision ratio of the retrieved information. Today basically the so called conventional information retrieval may not be able to satisfy the needs, where the retrieval is much more in linear platform or in uni-sequential mode. The required retrieval in present scenario is much more oriented towards knowledge retrieval, where the retrieved information platform is more non-linear or multi-sequential. The focal point of searches have been continuously shifting from umbral to penumral and again to penumbral to umbral. And the focal literatures or knowledge resources of the 1 st umbral position search targets are vastly different from the 2nd umbral position focal literatures targets as the search orientation will become more spiral and nonlinear in character with shifting from 1st umbral to penumbral needs and again from penumbral to umbral need. The semantic ontological approaches has a major role to play in this sort of retrieval, where the metadata platform has been built in an ontological order of the facets of the particular subject domain or a group of subject domains with umbral and penumbral relationship. The metadata should be vocabulary controlled with exhaustive linkage with RT (Relational Term), BT (Broader Term), NT (Narrower Term) and synomous terms, which is more inclined towards RT. The RT (Relational Term) is the most important link for venturing within umbral and penumbral areas of any domain of subject. Efforts has been made in the paper to draw an ontological semantic metadata platform of the facets of disease related with blood, heart and circulation. Nearly over 500 facets are tagged with semantic approaches along with RT, NT, and BT relationship and then those facets are being drawn in SKOS map of the W3 guidelines. And at the end those facets are programmed in XML:RDF frameworks. Due the limitation of the exhaustivity of the conference paper some 100 facets amongst the 500 ontological relational hierarchy structure have been taken to draw a prototype model of XML:RDF framework. Keywords: Metadata, Ontology, RDF (Resource Descriptive Framework), Semantic, WWW (World Wide Web), SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System), Linear Search, Non-linear Search
