Karlo Mila is a poet, writer and researcher of Tongan, Samoan, and Palangi decent, and an experience-based expert. Her postdoctoral research has been fuelled by trying to understand how traditional knowledge from the pacific regions would have framed and interpreted her experiences and she has developed a culturally responsive, indigenous, Pacific mental health intervention. The ISPS-NZ Executive invite abstracts for the 2014 Making Sense of Psychosis Conference. This year we are particularly interested in hearing about Shifting the Korero, shifting the conversation about psychosis. If we are to shift paradigms, destroy myths and make breakthroughs then we need to create environments which bring in new, diverse, and creative views. We wish to embrace and acknowledge the expertise of all involved with psychosis. The conference will have the structure of Te Whare Tapa Wha so we invite presentations under the four topic areas of hinengaro (mind and emotions), tinana (physical body), wairua (spirituality, meaning) and whanau (family, social), including the latest research and creative and innovative approaches. We have two presentation formats available; 1) 30 minute papers (20 minute presentations followed by 10 minutes of questions); 2) BITi – Brag, Ignite or Take issue (5 minute talk as part of a panel, a panel discussion, followed by opening the discussion to the audience). If you want to run an experiential mini-workshop during the breaks (e.g. walking meditation) or have other ideas for involvement then please make a suggestion with your abstract submission. Who would you like to see recognised for the work they do? We will also be awarding the inaugural John Read Award to acknowledge an individual’s commitment to shifting the paradigm and perspectives on our collective understanding of psychosis. Please nominate a person who you believe has displayed such a commitment or made an outstanding contribution to Shifting the Korero. Please contact Ingo Lambrecht with this information by August 8.
