BACK TO NATURE - BWI CHAMPION BOUCHARD FINLAYSON
INTRODUCES WINE TASTING & NATURE WALK EXCURSION
Visitors to the Cape Wine Show will find Bouchard Finlayson on stand H85, where they can
enter daily competitions to win prizes; and also represented at the Hemel-en-Aarde
Winegrowers’ Association stand O104.
Bouchard Finlayson has introduced a unique wine tasting excursion that combines a
scenic guided nature walk through the 100 hectares of protected Fynbos on the
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine Estate, with a tasting of its latest vintages and a
delicious Bouchard Brunch Board, to be enjoyed in the cellar or on the terrace
overlooking the vineyards.
Available every morning from Monday to Saturday, guests may book a choice of three
walking trails, varying in distance between 45 minutes and two and a half hours. The hikes
are guided by Bouchard Finlayson’s very own resident amateur botanist, Frank Woodvine,
an honorary member of Fernkloof Nature Reserve. With over 50 years of experience and
accumulated knowledge of the Cape Floral Kingdom, he offers captivating stories and
interesting facts about the indigenous plants found on the farm and surrounding area.
Bouchard Finlayson has been a proud Championship member of the Biodiversity
and Wine Initiative (BWI) since October 2011 - a partnership between the South
African wine industry and the conservation sector, aimed at protecting the Cape’s
rich floral kingdom. In support of its focus on conservation, only 22 hectares of the
Bouchard Finlayson farm is under vines, while the natural indigenous Fynbos is
being preserved in the interests of biodiversity. During 2015, BWI became
incorporated into the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) with all Champion members
regarded as ‘Champions in conservation’.
Back at the cellar wine tastings include six of Bouchard Finlayson’s latest vintages
– white blend Blanc de Mer 2014; Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2015; Sans Barrique
Chardonnay 2014; Kaaimansgat/Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay 2014; Bouchard
Finlayson’s famed red blend, the Hannibal 2013; as well as pinot pioneer,
winemaker Peter Finlayson’s award-winning flagship wine, Galpin Peak Pinot Noir
(currently the 2013 vintage).
The total cost is R235 per person (children under 12 pay R135) and groups are limited to a
maximum of 12 people. The package is subject to availability and needs to be pre-booked a
week in advance. Guided walks without the wine tasting and Brunch Board may also
be booked for groups of between six and 12 adults, at only R50 per person. All the
walking trails on the farm are available free of charge to visitors who prefer selfguided walks – hikers may collect maps and sign indemnity forms at the cellar
door.

ABOUT BOUCHARD FINLAYSON
Established in 1989 in the temperate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on 125 hectares (312
acres) of Walker Bay's prime viticultural land, Bouchard Finlayson Vineyard and
Winery is a small cellar dedicated to the quality production of Pinot noir,
Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. Ever since releasing their first vintages, the
name Bouchard Finlayson has been internationally synonymous with excellence.
Today, owned by the Red Carnation Hotels’ Tollman family and under the
leadership of Victoria Tollman and winemaker Peter Finlayson, 22 hectares (54
acres) of the estate are currently under vine with 50% devoted to the varietal for
which Peter is most acclaimed – Pinot noir. Other cultivars under production
include Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Sangiovese, as well as a handful under
exploration. Bouchard Finlayson is an accredited Championship member of the
Biodiversity and Wine initiative (BWI).
