Region 1 WebEx meeting 11/16/2013
Meeting started at 1:15
In attendance: Lisa Schmidt, Shari Packard, Pam Wooding, Nancy Krial , Penny Hawes, Martie Healy, Faye
Seltzer , Dianne Boyd, Debby Savage, Darcy Miller, Tina Longaker, Shelli King, Carol Kelly, Alison Head, Sandy
Williams, Lori Kaminski , Donny Kelly, Debbie DelGiorno, Lisa Toaldo, Beth Ann Adams
Adult Team Competition – Two competitions, North and South were proposed: one in Raleigh, NC and one
in Upper Marlboro, MD. NCDCTA would like to base their adult team competition on the youth team
competition that they have had in the past and try to attract adults who are just getting into dressage. The
dates of May 31-June 1 were suggested. PVDA had some interest in hosting an adult team competition
November 15 and 16 at Prince George Equestrian Center. There was some concern about having a
recognized competition that late in the season, but others were in favor. Lisa felt we should try it for 2014
and reassess for 2015. A vote was called and it was unanimous in favor. Subsequent to the meeting, PVDA
felt that the possibility of too few entries would not support their hosting an Adult Team Competition in
2014
Youth Team Competition – VADA is prepared to hold the competition again in Leesburg on July 26 and 27.
NCDCTA would like to change their date to the Labor of Love competition on August 30 and 31 in Raleigh.
They felt the end of the summer gives the kids more time to prepare for the competition. A Vote was called
and the vote was unanimously in favor of both shows.
2013 USDF/GAIG Regional Championships - Dianne Boyd stated there was an amazing turnout, possibly the
largest RC in the country with over 340 horses and a 20% increase in competitors from 2012. Doggie
costume show had 52 dogs. The show held a dessert party on Saturday night hosted by the vendors and it
was well received.
2013 BLM Championships - Martie Healy reported that it was an excellent show and well received for
having the BLM’s for the first time in NC. They are still getting positive feedback from competitors. They ran
a costume class because it was Halloween and had 32 competitors, some mounted, some unmounted, some
dogs. They had the ‘Taste of Martin County’ again this year including a blue grass band. They had some good
sponsors for the rider awards. Tina thanked NC for getting $1000 in extra prize money due to lower
numbers in the championship classes.
2014 BLM Championships- Tina is reviewing some changes in the BLMs for 2014 with respect to the A and B
riders requirements. The BLMs will be in Lexington VA, October 16 – 19 and hosted by VADA.
2014 USDF/GAIG Regional Championships – They will be October 2 - 5, 2014 in Williamston, NC. Martie has
just begun hiring judges and TDs. They may want to hold 4 open final classes on Thursday.
NAJYRC/Youth report – Debbie Delgiorno reported that Bebe Davis from NJ won the Bronze medal in the
Junior Freestyle Championship. Having a chef for each team worked well and as Eliza Romm will not be
available in 2014, Debbie is reviewing other chef possibilities. The Silent auction at ESDCTA’s Memorial Day
Show raised another $5000 which will go toward new equipment. For 2014 the online auction will start
earlier and Debbie has more help. The NAJYRC dates are July 15-20, 2014 in Lexington KY and will be held
there for the unforeseeable future, so then the region can rent storage space to store the new equipment.
Preparation has begun for 2014 for a youth clinic with George Williams at Hassler Dressage. Rather than set
up separate DSE clinics, Debbie is encouraging youth in the region to participate in Lendon Gray’s EDAP
Clinics. She is looking for a couple of farms in the region to host these clinics. There is one scheduled
December 14 and 15 at Steiner Dressage in NJ. Debbie also reported that Region One youth, Annan Hepner
is a new member of the USDF YPAS Commiteee.
Adult Clinic – Hilda Gurney will be the clinician and the event will be hosted by PVDA on April 12 and 13 at
Wyndham Oaks Farm in Boyd MD. USDF has asked that there be a balance between amateurs and
professionals as riders. There will be a link to the rider application with other information on the Region 1
website.
Dressage At Devon –Unusually beautiful weather for the show. Rider numbers were back up due to the
upgraded footing. DVCTA did its quadrille again and the special exhibition was Tommie Turvey. There was a
competitor wait list for the first time in years and the Breed show numbers were up slightly.
Omnibus – Dianne Boyd reported that most of the feedback related to the e-blast and information available
on line was well received. The region plans to continue with the digital format utilizing the e-blasts and
website. Prices will remain the same at $50 for a listing in 2014. She is working on providing a survey to the
region on thoughts about this new version of the omnibus.
Region 1 Awards - Debby Savage reported that the region has a full group of candidates. For Youth
Contribution to Dressage: Kathie Lang, Laura Dickerson, Anna Weniger. For Adult Contribution to
Dressage: Debbie Delgiorno, Kathy King. Voting will take place at the convention and Debby will email
the nomination information to PM and GMO delegates.
L-Programs: There were three in the region this year. PVDA and VADA had 20 people participate and take
the final exam. Eighteen people passed and six passed with distinction. DVCTA also held a program and
testing but the final exam results were not reported.
Instructor Certification Programs: A program was held at Averett University in NC with a final testing on
September 7 and 8. Hilltop Farm in MD is in the process of holding several instructor training workshops
and will have a testing on April 12 and 13.
Region 1 Website: The website needs photos from GMOs, L Programs, BLMs, GAIGs, etc. Lisa would like to
have a theme for the website and eblasts monthly that corresponds to whatever is of importance in a
particular month. Send photos with venue and explanation of who is in the photo to Shari at
Shari@almon.net. Shari needs more information from GMOs about clinics and programs, etc. to put on the
website.
USDF Convention in Lexington, KY this year December 4-8. Regional meetings are Thursday December 5
9:15 – 10:30 and Friday December 6 8:00-9:00. The Board of Governors meeting is on Friday, 1:30-3:30 and

The 2014 the convention will be in Cambridge, MA and the 2015 convention will be in Las Vegas, NV
National Finals – Tina Longaker attended and said the feedback was good. The Alltech arena was very horse
friendly and there were immediate online results from software created by Kevin Bradberry. Awards
ceremonies went well. Among the Champions and Reserve Champions from Region One were Heather
Mason, Erin Laurent and Heather Mendiburu from NJ, Joanne Coleman and Emily O'Neil from
PA, Claudia Novick from NC, Stephanie McNutt, Lucy Tidd and Alexa Briscoe from MD.

Committee Reports
Tina Longaker reported that the Regional Championships Committee was meeting on Monday November 18
and that the Competition Management Committee was meeting Wednesday November 20. She is also on
the Historical Committee and their presentation of awards to Anne Gribbons, Charles deKunffy and Marilyn
Heath will take place at the convention.
GMO committee – Darcy Miller reported that they are putting together an agenda for the meeting at the
convention. One GMO has its 40th anniversary and LVDA got three website and photography awards this
year.
Adult Education – Shelli King reiterated information about the Adult Clinics and educational opportunities at
the convention.
GMO Reports:
NCDCTA – They said that their end of the year was a great show. Looking forward to next year and still
making plans for events.
VADA – They hosted the youth team competition, finished the L program, and had the annual chapter
challenge
DVCTA – Next year Dressage at Fair Hill will move to Radnor as a one day show on June 7. Planning on the
horse trials and “on the way to FEI” clinic in September
French Creek – They will host George Williams in the fall, as well as Schooling shows, paper chase, 5K-10K
run as a fundraiser.
ESDCTA –They have a new website with an omnibus on line and on line membership renewal. They had a
great CDI with AA sweepstakes. They continue to have many youth programs and a youth presence on
facebook
LVDA – They held a fix a test, 5 schooling shows with high entries, a recognized show with a clinic the next
day. Membership has grown from 100 to 131 members.
The Spring meeting will be Sunday March 16, 2014 at Hassler Dressage in Chesapeake City, MD. The
Hasslers will be presenting a clinic on March 15 in conjunction with the meeting.
There was discussion about the format of the Webex fall meeting. The format works, but there is trouble
hearing some people. The weekends in November 2014 are too full on the region’s calendar to have a
weekend teleconference. A weekday evening may be possible. It was agreed to discuss it further at the
convention.
New Business: A discussion arose on how to fundraise to help PM Delegates defray costs to convention.
Suggestions: Could we ask for $1 donations at horse shows to start a fund? Dianne stated that very few
people donated this way. Can we get something donated that could be raffled off? Could we have a silent
auction at Dressage at Devon? Lori Kaminski agreed to look into that.
Meeting adjourned at 3:10
