Purpose
The objective of the Shared Equipment Program is to provide matching funds to support the purchase or upgrade of a single item of specialized equipment or integrated system for shared-use between COM faculty and collaborators conducting competitive basic, translational or clinical research. The equipment must address an unmet need and should be integrated into a central core facility whenever possible.
Examples of the types of equipment supported include specialized microscopes, mass spectrometers,
DNA sequencers, cell sorters, and NMR spectrometers, among others. Proposals that include matching funds from Departments, Centers or other Programs will be considered. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to consider extramural funding mechanisms that support equipment, such as NIH’s Shared
Instrumentation Grant Program (S10).
Funding Available
There is no upper limit on the cost of the equipment, but the maximum award is $50,000. Commitment of an appropriate level of support to ensure the associated sustaining infrastructure is expected and should be described. Funding will be awarded for a period of one year. Renewal applications are not permitted.
Sustainability of the proposed shared resource must be established through appropriate description of the business model.
Eligibility
Department Chair/Institute or Center Director will submit the Shared Equipment Program application with any principal investigator within COM.
The Principal Investigator for the application must be able to assume administrative/scientific oversight, responsibility for the equipment requested, and management of equipment as a shared resource into an existing core.
To demonstrate the clear need for the requested equipment, projects supported by active research grants should require at least 75 percent of the total usage time.
For eligibility, a minimum of 3 individual researchers within COM / NCH / OSU, or a group of investigators within the same department or from several departments must be identified as equipment users.
Contact Committee chair Dr. Chandan Sen, Associate Dean for Translational Research, College of
Medicine for any questions regarding eligibility.
Review
The College of Medicine Research Core Oversight Committee (CoMRCOC) will evaluate each application on overall impact/benefit of the equipment requested. A committee member or COM Office of Research staff member may contact the applicant in advance of the committee review session for additional research project information
Reporting
A final Core Equipment Progress Report is required and is due 60 days after the project period ends. This report includes a description of the equipment purchased, a detailed fiscal report (list of all users, revenue generated, and expenditures) and a description of problems or concerns arising from use of the equipment.
Application Requirements
☐
Face Page (signed)
☐
Justification of Unmet Need & Equipment Description
Provide a clear justification why new or updated equipment, including accessories, are needed.
Describe the equipment requested including manufacturer and model number. The model chosen should be justified by comparing its performance with other available equipments where appropriate.
☐
Budget
An itemized quote, with appropriate discount from a vendor, should be included.
If human or infectious materials which could create a potential biohazard are to be analyzed, funds for containment accessories for the equipment may be requested in the budget.
☐
Equipment Users (minimum of 3 major users)
For each equipment user, provide the following information: o Research project(s) title and brief description o Source of project funding o Indicate how the requested instrument will advance the knowledge and understanding of each proposed project
☐
Technical Expertise (Page Limit 1)
Technical Expertise: Does the institution have the technical expertise to make effective use of the requested equipment? How well qualified are the participating investigators or other assigned personnel to operate and maintain the instrument, conduct the projects, and evaluate the research results? How will new users be trained?
☐
Administration and Sustainability Plan
Provide a plan for the management and maintenance of the requested instrument to include: oversight, prioritization of usage, sharing arrangements (equitable?), advertisement of availability of equipment, and a financial plan for long-term operation and maintenance of the instrument.
Timeline for purchase and installation of equipment
☐
Letter(s) of Support from
Department Chair/Institute or Center Director that includes a commitment of 1:1 matching funds.
Letter of support from Shared Resource Core Director if equipment is housed in existing core.
