We’re glad you signed up! This class is the second of GOFAMINT’s Six basic classes through which we fulfill our Statement of Purpose. This class is also the basic introduction to our church family. We believe it is an exciting and necessary first step towards fulfilling all that God has for us, individually and corporately in
GOFAMINT. Since we have members from many different backgrounds and even members from GOFAMINT from other nations, this class is designed to clearly explain what the church of Christ is doctrinally and structurally and how this body of believers (GOFAMINT) and this local church operates.
Discovering church membership is divided into four sessions. Efforts would be made to make this class interesting, practical and resource-full. We therefore commend you to God and to the word of his grace to build you up and to give you a sure inheritance among the sanctified.
1
THE BASIS FOR THIS CLASS
“Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.” Eph. 2:19 (LB)
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Amos 3:3
KEY TRUTHS:
The church is a family
God expects you to be a member of His family
A Christian without a church family is an orphan.
There is the need for unity and alignment of beliefs and purpose to make the family functional and fruitful.
*There are four inlets into the church namely:
Biological inlet: this refers to children born into the church by members.
Conversion inlet: this refers to those who became members of the church through evangelism
Transfer inlet: this refers to those who join the church from another church for genuine reasons.
Invitation inlet: those who join the church by invitation.
For the church to function properly there is the need to have a forum to make the purpose of the church very clear to every would-be member.
2
THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLASS o To know and understand what the church of Christ is and what it is not. o To know and understand the historical and theological roots of GOFAMINT. o To know and understand the purpose for why this church exists. o To know and experience our convictions and values at GOFAMINT in general and this assembly in particular. o To understand the vision and strategy to fulfill our purpose o To be introduced to some key leaders in GOFAMINT in general and House of
God’s Possibilities in particular. o To know what it means to be a member of GOFAMINT family. o To involve you in the “body life” of GOFAMINT through the TDP, Focus and Small Group participation and service. o To fellowship together and have fun.
THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS CLASS:
………That I will commit myself to Christ and to the GOFAMINT family
After knowing and understanding the material presented, the goal for me is to hear
God’s voice regarding becoming a part of GOFAMINT church family through membership.

, The Greek word ‘ekklesia’ translated “Church” in the King
James Version of our Bible means a calling out, a called out assembly. It means the assembly of people called out from the world to the Lord.
5
The Church is an institution of God. It is the property of God and Christ His Son.
God the father planned the church, His Son Jesus Christ built the church, and therefore, became its head, and the Holy Spirit supervises the church and thereby becomes its vicar or General Overseer.
The Church is God’s family on the earth
“So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners, you are citizens along with all God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.” Eph. 2:19 (NLT)
The Church is God’s Dwelling Place on earth.
“Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” Eph. 2:20-22 (NIV)
The Church is Christ’s Body
“And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Eph.
1:22-23 (NASB)
The Church is the Revealer of God’s Wisdom
“The purpose is that through the church the complicated, many-sided wisdom of God in all its infinite variety and innumerable aspects might now be made known to the angelic rulers and authorities (principalities and powers) in the heavenly sphere.” Eph.
3:10 (AMP)
The Church is Christ’s Army
“I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be on earth will be permitted in heaven.” forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit
Matt. 16:18-19 (TLB
)
The Church is God’s house on the earth.
“So if I can’t come for a while, you will know how people must conduct themselves inn the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and support of the truth.” I Tim. 3:15 (NLT)
The Church is the congregation of covenant-people having “one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all ……” Eph. 4:4-6
6
“Gather together to Me My saints [those who have found grace in My sight], those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” Ps. 50:5 (Amp)
You become a member of the church after you have passed through the cross, confessed your sins, applied the blood of Jesus Christ through faith, and
become a new man by His grace. Acts 2:37-42
“This message God has given us to pass on to you: that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. So if we say we are his friends, but go on living in spiritual darkness and sin, we are lying. But if we are living in the light of God’s presence, just as Christ does, then we have wonderful fellowship and joy with each other, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from every sin.” I Jn. 1:5-7
“Some of us are slaves, and others are free. But God’s Spirit baptized each of us and made us part of the body of Christ. Now we each drink from the same Spirit.” I Cor.
12:13 (CEV)
, The Church is an institution of God set up to purify you, purge you, perfect you, and potentially use you. The Christian life is not only a matter of
believing but also a matter of belonging and eventually a matter of becoming. The moment you are saved, you become a member of the church universal, but you need to become a member of the church local for:
The Development of Christian virtue
The Deployment of potential for Christian Service
“But you are a chosen priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and
perfections of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” I
Pet.2:9 (Amp)
: The church of God is a place where:
Pardon is received
The Presence of God is felt
The Power of God is demonstrated
The Love of God is displayed
The Glory of God is activated
The Saints serve and are served.

BELONGING TO A LOCAL CHURCH
It has been discovered that the matter of belonging to a local church has been made complicated by many people thus making them dysfunctional-junky members of
God’s family. A lot of factors that are “no factors” have been interjected into the system thus weakening the strength and slowing down the growth of the church local in the church universal. Let’s look at some of them.
1. Ethnic factor. “How many of my people are there?”
“We are no longer Jews or slaves or men or even merely men and women, but we are all the same – we are Christians; we are one in Christ.” Gal. 3:28
2. Profession factor: “How many in my profession are there?
“I determined not to know anything among you, except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” I Cor.2:2
3. Crowd factor: “How many people are there? “For where two or three are gathered together because they are mine, I will be right there among them.” Matt. 18:20
4. Status factor: “How many people of my caliber are there?
“The rich and the poor meet together, the LORD is the maker of them all.” Prov.
22:2
“The rich and the poor are alike before the Lord who made them all.” Prov. 22:2
(TLB)
5. Leadership factor: “Who is the pastor there?”
“My brothers, are you really trying to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord with the worship of rank? Jam. 2:1 (TCNT)
“Brethren, you believe that all glory belongs to our Lord Jesus Christ, do not combine this faith of yours with flattery of human greatness.” Jam. 2:1 (Knox)
6. Amenities factor: “Do they have a good building, a good sound and music system?
“The Most high does not dwell in houses and temples made with hands; as the prophet says.” Acts 7:48
7. Style factor: “What is the worship, music, or preaching style?
“…those who keep the truth stated in this Book, worship God alone.” Rev. 22:9
“God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in
Spirit and in truth (reality).” Jn. 4:24
8
“Don’t fall in love with how you worship than whom you worship. Anytime God can only show up in the way you are accustomed to, that in itself has become an idol. Anytime you cannot receive somebody unless they talk the way you want them to talk, move the way you want them to move, sing the way you want them to sing, preach the way you want them to preach, act the way you want them to act, you are not Worshiping God, you are worshiping your method, your routine and your tradition.
. Don’t fall in love with style; fall in love with God so that
in any way he shows up, you are ready to receive Him.
8. Position factor: What position will they give me?
“It is not the man who praises and commends himself who is approved and accepted, but it is the person whom the Lord accredits and commends.” II Cor. 10:18
When you seek the position of God more than the presence of God, you are setting yourself for misery.
9. Proximity factor: “How near is the church to where I live?
It is not a matter of how near but a matter of where you can be a blessing and be fulfilled.
10. Denomination factor: “I am not a member of this church”
Christ is not divided. The church of Christ is one. Anywhere you find yourself, worship God and do your best to serve others. Eph.4:1-6
THE MAIN FACTOR – THE WORD OF GOD
“And now brethren, I commit you to the Lord and to His gracious word which is able to build up your character and give you your place among all those who have become
God’s people.” Acts 20:32
The Word must be heard, received, believed, stored, and applied.
“I will keep Your law forever and ever [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying it].” Ps.
119:44 (Amp)
, the church is:
A. A FELLOWSHIP:
9
“They continued steadfastly learning the teaching of the apostles, and joined in the fellowship.” Acts 2:42
Literally, fellowship means two fellows in a ship heading in the same direction.
According to Webster it means, a company of equals and friends. We must know that despite our differences, we have been made one by the precious blood of Jesus Christ
“We are no longer Jews or slaves or free men or even merely men and women, but we are all the same – we are Christians; we are one in Christ.” Gal. 3:28
A top priority in a fellowship is Harmony and Unity
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Eph.
4:3
“So let us concentrate on the things that make for harmony and the growth of our fellowship together.” Rom. 14:19 (Ph)
“But dear brothers, I beg you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to stop arguing among yourselves. Let there be real harmony so that there won’t be splits in the church. I plead with you to be of one mind, united in thoughts and purpose.” I
Cor.1:10
“How wonderful it is, how pleasant, for God’s people to live together in harmony! It is like the precious anointing oil running down from Aaron’s beard, down to the collar of his robes. It is like the dew on Mount Hermon, falling on the hills of Zion.
That is where the LORD has promised his blessing – life that never ends.” Ps. 133:1-3
Disunity weakens the strength of the church, slows down the growth of the
church and gives the principalities and powers the upper hand over the church.
Any church where there is disunity can never stand and can never experience the visitation of the Almighty God.
“.A divided kingdom ends in ruin. A city or home divided against itself cannot stand.”
Matt. 12:25
“Often your meetings do more harm than good because I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you….” I Cor.11:17-18
10
Any attitude that causes disunity is sin and anyone who does it is a sinner inviting the wrath of God on His own head.
“……The Lord hates ……..sowing discord among brothers.” Prov. 6:16-19
1. Making issues out of trivial things
I am not recognized
I am not called/visited
I am not respected
No one feels concerned about my situation etc.
There is no love in the church
No issue is an issue unless it is made an issue.
Whatsoever you want, you have to sow it first.
“Remind your people of these great facts, and command them in the name of the
Lord not to argue over unimportant things. Such arguments are confusing and useless and even harmful.” II Tim. 2:14
2. Preferential treatment of Ministers:
“Dear brothers, I have been talking to you as though you were still babies in the
Christian life who are not following the Lord but your own desires; I cannot talk to you as I would to healthy Christians who are filled with the Spirit. For you are still only baby Christians, controlled by your own desires, not God’s. When you are jealous of one another and divide up into quarreling groups, doesn’t that prove you are still babies, wanting your own way? In fact, you are acting like people who don’t belong to the Lord at all. There you are, quarreling about whether I am greater than
Apollos, and dividing the church. Doesn’t this show how little you have grown in the
Lord? Who am I, and who is Apollos, that we should be the cause of quarrel? Why, we are just God’s servants, each of us with certain special abilities, and with our help you believed. My work was to plant the seed in your hearts, and Apollos’s work was to water it, but it was God, not we, who make the garden grow in your hearts. The person who does the planting or watering isn’t important because He is the one who makes things grow.” I Cor.3:1-7
11
3. Character Problem – Gossip, Slander, Envy, Jealousy, Anger, Malice etc. I believe this is the greatest problem of the church today.
“Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves.
Let each of you esteem and look upon and be concerned for not [merely] his own interests, but also each for the interests of others.” Phil. 2:3-4 (Amp)
“Let us not become vainglorious and self-conceited, competitive and challenging and provoking and irritating to one another, envying and being jealous of one another.”
Gal. 5:26 (Amp)
We are not recreated to fight against one another, but we are recreated to love one another and to with one accord fight against the principalities and powers.
1Cor. 13 & Eph. 6:12
“Understand [this], my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. For man’s anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires].” James 1:19-20 (Amp)
B. A FAMILY:
“You should be like one big family, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts and humble minds.” I Pet. 3:8
“God has given us a privilege of being born again so that we are now members of His own family.” Jn. 1:12
As a family, the church operates on the basis of Relationship not Rules
Our family tie is by the blood of Jesus, which is greater and stronger than the natural blood. Rom. 8:17
As a family we are to:
Love one another I Cor. 13:1-7; I Jn. 3:14-18
Respect one another I Tim. 5:1-2; Rom. 12:9-10
Care for one another Gal. 6:2
12
Forgive and pray for one another Eph. 5:31-32; Jam. 5:16; Heb. 12:14
Open to one another. James 5:16
Provide for one another Gal. 6:10; Acts 2:34-35
Encourage and appreciate one another. Col. 3:16
C. A BODY:
“We have many parts in one body, and all these parts have different functions. In the same way, though we are many, we are one body in union with Christ, and we are all joined to each other as different parts of the body. So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us.” Rom. 12:4-6
1. We are a Body, not a business! We are an organism – not an organization!
“Under His control all the different parts of the body fit together, and the whole body is held together by every joint with which it is provided. So when each separate part works as it should, the whole body grows and builds itself up through love. Eph. 4:16
There is no room for jealousy, envy, competition and gift projection in the house.
Everyone is important. Everyone is needed. Locate your identity and your place in
Him and get occupied. Everything needed is in the House. Awake the sleeping giant inside of you.
Point of Note: It is not what you do in the house that matters; it is how you do it.
2. The church functions on the basis of spiritual gifts and not on elected officials. The people are the ministers, and the pastors are the administers.
“God gave …. Some to be pastors and teachers to prepare God’s people for works of ministry, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Eph. 4:11-12
D. A FLOCK: Jn. 10:1-30; Matt. 26:31; Matt. 25:33
The church must be cared for and led by Shepherds.
“And I will gather together the remnant of my flock from wherever I have sent them and bring them back into their own fold, and they shall be fruitful and increase. And I will appoint responsible shepherds to care for them, and they shall not need to be afraid again; all of them shall be accounted for continually.” Jer. 23:3-4
13
Three different terms are used in the New Testament to refer to the same church leaders:
Poimen: Pastor/Shepherd
Presbuteros: Elders
Episcopos: Overseer/Bishop
“To the elders I say…..Be shepherds of God’s flock, serving as overseers ….” I Pet.
5:1-2
Pastors are appointed by God. They are to take care of the flock and to feed them.
The flocks also are to obey and be submissive to them. It is a two-way responsibility.
The two must flow together before there can be a flow.
“And now a word to you the elders of the church. ….Feed the flock of God; care for it willingly, not grudgingly; not for what you will get out of it but because you are eager to serve the Lord. Don’t be tyrants, but lead them by good example, and when the Head shepherd comes, your reward will be a never-ending share in his glory and honor.” I Pet. 5: 1-4
“Obey your leaders and follow their orders. They watch over your souls without resting, since they must give to God an account of their service. If you obey them, they will do their work gladly; if not, they will do it with sadness, and that would be of no help to you. Keep on praying for us. We are sure we have a clear conscience, because we want to do the right thing at all times.” Heb. 13:17-18
“..The Lord has ordered that those who preach the gospel should get their living from it.” I Cor. 8:14
“Let him who receives instruction in the Word [of God] share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support). Gal. 6:6
E. A BRIDE: Matt. 25:1-10; Rev. 19:6-9; Eph. 5:27
“Let us rejoice and shout for joy [exulting and triumphant]! Let us celebrate and ascribe to Him glory and honor, for the marriage of the Lamb [at last] has come, and
His bride has prepared herself. She has been permitted to dress in fine (radiant) linen, dazzling and white - for the fine linen is (signifies, represents) the righteousness (the upright, just, and godly living, deeds, and conduct, right standing with God) of the saints (God’s holy people). Then [the angel] said unto me, Write this down: Blessed
(happy, to be envied) are those who are summoned (invited, called) to the marriage
14
supper of the Lamb, and he said to me [further]. These are the true words (the genuine and exact declarations) of God.” Rev. 19:7-8 (Amp)
We are the bride, Christ is the bridegroom. He is coming to take us home to himself.
That is why we should all get prepared.
F. A NATION:
“...... you are a dedicated nation ........”
1. The church is a self propagating, self supporting and a self governing nation. That is why every member must be:
Committed to the Great Commission,
Faithful giving his/her tithe and offering
Follow the faith of the leaders.
2. The church is not an exclusive body, it is inclusive. There is no need for denominational schism. We are one nation under God that is indivisible by the permissive will of God (denomination). Anyone who is denominationally minded cannot be enlisted into the end time army. Anyone who is denominationally biased cannot be relevant to what God wants to do. As believers, we must know that God does not reward denominations, he rewards individuals. As the nation of God we are committed to teach all nations.
“Go then and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matt. 28:19

WHAT WE ARE
The Gospel Faith Mission International is a church driven by purpose, founded on the Word of God, directed by the Holy Spirit, anchored by love and committed to the Great Commission. The church started in 1956 by Late Pastor (Dr) R.A. George and some other founding members including the current General Overseer Pastor
(Dr) E.O. Abina with Headquarters in Nigeria. The church that started with 20 people has grown so large today with over 2000 branches under 12 Administrative regions subdivided into Districts and Areas in Nigeria and also with viable presence in 5 Continents of the World.
As the name is, so we are.
The - We are unique. We do not exist to compete with any group of believers.
We exist to do His will.
Gospel - We exist to share the gospel (the good news) of Christ to all men irrespective of their race, color and creed. Matt.28:18-20; Mk.16:15; Rom.1:16
Faith - We do all things by faith. We believe nothing is impossible with God and nothing is improbable in Him. We take God by His Word and nothing else. John 14:12
Mission - We believe and know that our mission is to the world. So, we are committed to reaching all men despite the differences that exist. We are committed to being all things to all men that we might save some.
International - We are not “Nigerian church”, we are the church of Christ with a mission to the world. We exist for all and we are sent to all. Mk.16:15
We function as a New Testament church to meet the needs of mankind by the grace, the Word, and the power of God. Acts 20:32; Acts 2:42-49
We are:
1.
A Learning Church: “...then spent their time learning….” Verse 42; Matt.
11:28-30; Rom. 15:4
17
“It is dangerous to raise immature members that are being drifted by every wind of false doctrine like children who can’t differentiate between right or wrong.”
Pastor Elijah Abina
2.
A Teaching Church: “…learning the apostles’ teaching.” Verse 42; Matt.
28:20; Eph. 4:11-16
3.
A Preaching Church: Acts 5:42
4.
A Sharing and Family Church: Matt. 23:8; Acts 2:44-45; I Cor. 12:13; Matt.
23:8
5.
A Fellowship Church: Acts 2:46
6.
A Caring and Loving Church: Acts 2:45; 6:1-7
7.
A United Church: Ps. 133; Acts 4:32
8.
A Favored Church: Acts 2:47a
9.
A Praying and Growing Church: Acts 2:41,47; 4:31; 6:7; 12:5
OUR STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
“The starting point for every church should be the question, “Why do we exist?”
Until you know what your church exists for, you have no foundation, no motivation, and no direction in ministry.” (Rick Warren)
The Need for a Clear Purpose
A clear purpose builds morale
A clear purpose reduces frustration.
A clear purpose allows concentration (Phil.3:13).
A clear purpose attracts cooperation (Ezra 10:4).
A clear purpose assists evaluation (II Cor.13:5)
18
“The GOFAMINT’s statement of purpose embraces the basic and major functions of the church on earth, namely, Outreach, Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Service – all these, when put into action, make the church effective, active and get recognized in the community and the world at large…The GOFAMINT’s Statement of Purpose
stands as her vision to which every member should subscribe and be committed, and vigorously pursue to achieve its aim and objective” (Pastor E.O. Abina)
“To preach the word of God and bring people into membership of God’s family; to
teach the word of God to enhance freedom, promote Christian maturity and bind the people to God for service; and to live the word of God to demonstrate the new life in Christ to the world, and ensure security of the believer.”
“So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
Acts 20:32
“Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in Spirit, intent on one purpose” (Phil. 2:2 NASB).
From this statement of purpose it is clearly spelt out why GOFAMINT exists.
GOFAMINT CHURCH EXISTS :
To Preach the Gospel (God’s Word) to all mankind (Outreach)
To Share Christ’s life together and incorporate people into God’s family (Fellowship)
To Educate God’s people to grow into maturity (Discipleship)
To Serve God’s people and our community (Ministry)
To Live God’s Word and Celebrate His presence (Worship)
19
EXPLAINING THE CHURCH PURPOSE/CORE VALUES
1. WE EXIST TO PREACH THE GOSPEL (GOD’S WORD) TO ALL
MANKIND
OUTREACH:
“And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:15-16 (NLT)
“Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” Luke 14:23 (NKJV)
“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” Matt. 10:7-8 (NKJV)
Why Our Church Must Never Stop Growing. a. BECAUSE God loves people.
“The Lord ... is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but wants everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Pet. 3:9; II Cor. 5:14, Lk. 15:3-10, Matt. 9:12-13 b. BECAUSE God commands us to reach out.
“Go out into the country... and urge anyone you find to come in, so that my House will be full.” Lk. 14:23 (LB).
“... you will be my witness ...” Acts 1:8. c. BECAUSE Growth is Gods will.
“Under Christ’s control, the whole Body is nourished... and grows as God wants it to grow” Col. 2:19(GN)
“I will build my church. Matt. 16:18
Unbiblical excuses for not growing:
* “God isn’t interested in numbers”
* “Our church wants quality not quantity.”
20
* “Large churches are impersonal”
We believe our church must grow larger and smaller at the same time. We believe in creating smaller groups for people to learn better to grow faster.
“And the Good News of the Kingdom will be preached to the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and THEN the end will come.” Matt. 24:14.
Discovering Life Foundation— Class #001
2. WE SHARE CHRIST’S LIFE TOGETHER AND INCORPORATE
PEOPLE INTO GOD’S FAMILY
FELLOWSHIP
“Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family, citizens of God’s country, and you belong in
God’s household with every other Christian. Eph. 2:19 (TLB)
“Share each other’s troubles and problems, and so obey our Lord’s command. That’s why whenever we can we should always be kind to everyone, and especially to our
Christian brothers. If anyone thinks he is too great to stoop to this, he is fooling himself. He is really a nobody.” Eph. 6:2, 10, 3 (TLB)
“Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]. The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].” James 5:16 (Amp)
“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Acts 2:41-
42
Discovering Church Membership—Class #101
3. WE EXIST TO EDUCATE GOD’S PEOPLE TO GROW INTO
MATURITY.
21
DISCIPLESHIP:
“Let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity...” Heb. 6:1
“Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Pet. 3:18
“Our greatest wish and prayer is that you will become mature Christians.” II Cor. 13:9
(LB)
This Maturity is attained by: a. The Word of God: “Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose and action). So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.” II Tim. 3:16-17 b. The Spirit of God: “Now unto Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of
His} power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams. To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen (so be it).”
Eph. 3:20-21 (Amp) c. The Men of God: “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the attaining to the whole measure of knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, the fullness of Christ.” Eph. 4:11-13 (NIV)

4. WE SERVE GOD’S PEOPLE AND OUR COMMUNITY.
MINISTRY:
22
Ministry means accomplishing God’s purpose by using your potentials with love.
“God has given each of us ability to do certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, then prophesy whenever you can – as often as your faith is strong enough to receive a message from God. If your gift is that of serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, do a good job of teaching. If you are a preacher, see to it that your sermons are strong and helpful. If God has given you money, be generous in helping others with it. If God has given you administrative ability and put you in charge of the work of others, take the responsibility seriously. Those who offer comfort to the sorrowing should do so with Christian cheer.” Rom. 12:6-8
Point of Note: You are not saved by service, but you are saved for service. In God’s kingdom, you have a place, a purpose, a role, and a function to fulfil. This gives your life great significance and value.
“It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ
Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others. Eph. 2:10 (LB)
“I glorified you on earth by completing down to the last detail what you assigned me to do.” Jn. 17:4 (Msg)
Point of Note: It is a great tragedy for a man to die with his God-given potentials without accomplishing God’s purpose. Acts 13:36
Point of Note: It should be noted that unlike the people of the world that serves with wrong motives and wrong attitudes, believers are to serve one another in love.
Gal. 5:13-15, 26.
“For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; only [do not let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or excuse [for selfishness], but through love you should serve one another.” Gal. 5:13 (Amp)
“By this shall all men know that you are my disciples - that you have love for one another.” Jn. 13:35; I Jn. 3:16-17; Matt. 25:34-40; Heb. 13:16; Rom. 12:13
The heartbeat of GOFAMINT is our LOVE. Every member needs to be a part of this.
23
“Now God gives us many kinds of special abilities... and there are different kinds of service to God (ministry)... All of you together for the one Body of Christ and each of you is a separate and necessary part of it. I Cor. 12:4-5, 27(LB)
In Gospel Faith Mission International:
1. Every member is a Minister
2. Every task is important
3. Every member is a “10” in some areas. We believe everybody is important with unique gifts, talents, abilities, interests and experiences.
Discovering my ministry—Class #301
5. WE EXIST TO LIVE GOD’S WORD AND CELEBRATE GOD’S
PRESENCE
WORSHIP:
“Worship the Lord your God, serve Him only. “ Matt.4:10
“A time will come, however indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers.” Jn.4:23 (Emphasis in parenthesis added)
“So, brothers and sisters, what should you do? When you meet together, one person has a song, and another has a teaching. Another has a new truth from God. Another speaks in a different language,
(NCV) and another person interprets that language. The purpose of all these things should be to help the church grow strong.” I Cor. 14:26
EXPRESSIONS OF WORSHIP
Singing (Eph. 5:19)
Commitment (Rom. 12:1-2)
Praying (Ps. 95:6)
Hearing the Word (Jn. 17:17)
Giving (I Cor. 16:1-2)
Baptism (Rom. 6:3-4)
24
Meditating (Hab. 2:20)
Lord’s Supper (I Cor. 11:23-26)
In GOFAMINT, we believe worship is far more than these expressions. Worship is a lifestyle (Matt. 22:37-38). Worship is living in the light of God’s presence every moment (I Jn. 1:7). Worship is doing everything to the glory of God (I Cor.10:31).
Worship is actually demonstrating the life of Christ to the world by living according to the principles of the scriptures; coming to church, singing, giving, and having all these expressions without living Christ’s life are just religious exercises without eternal benefits. Matt. 7:21-23. We are haven bound-believers doing every expression in the light of God’s presence. Acts 5:1-11
“Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life- and place it before God as an offering.” Rom.12:1 (Msg)
“I don’t want your sacrifices, I want your love; I don’t want your offerings, I want you to know me.” Hos. 6:6 (LB)
Real Worship is passionately seeking to know God.
OUR TRANSFORMATIONAL DISCIPLESHIP PROCESS [TDP]
We have discovered and established a Transformational Discipleship Process skillfully crafted around the Statement of Purpose. This process has to do with taking people through the circle of commitment for them to become strong people secured in their identity in Christ and able to make a great impact for the Lord in the market place and in the whole world.
C.L.A.S.S. 001-501
“A church that is discipleship-oriented will be service-conscious, and a serviceconscious church is a blessing to God, to itself and the community…However this cannot come by without purposeful and transformational or life-changing discipleship program which should commence by applying our Statement of Purpose and Membership covenant. As a purpose-driven church, we should always aim at raising purpose-driven members.” (Pastor E.O. Abina).
25
The Intentional Discipleship Process we use is a series of established seminars called
CLASS.
These are standard foundational classes that everyone that God sends our way is encouraged to subscribe to irrespective of their spiritual attainment, position and status for personal growth, empowerment, and corporate alignment.
Is.62:10 “Lift up a standard for the people.” Romans 2:11 “There is no respect of persons with God.” People come with seen and unseen things into a new environment and it is the unseen things that eventually spoil the feast.
These classes are not scholastic exercises but they are aimed at progressive transformation into Christ likeness. They are purpose driven.
These classes would bring to everyone increase in knowledge, change in perspective, development of absolute conviction, development of necessary skills and ultimately, development of godly character which is the bedrock of success in life and ministry.
The Statement of Purpose contains our Vision, our Core Values and our
Transformational Discipleship Process.
To preach the word and bring people into membership of God’s
family
Outreach: CLASS 001 (New Foundation Class) (a 7 weeks of foundation teachings that provide a unique opportunity to hear the redemption story again and commit to Christ). Water baptism takes place after this class for those who are not yet baptized.
Fellowship: CLASS 101 – Membership Class (A compressed lecture aimed at introducing people to the church of Christ, to
GOFAMINT family, the local church family (7 Things that make us, cultures, who is a member, benefits of membership, discipline etc. and our Membership Covenant). This class helps people to become a member and also to helps them to develop a sense of belonging.
“It is no longer their church but my church.” At the end of it people take the membership covenant.
26
To teach the word of God to enhance freedom, promote Christian
maturity and bind the people to God for service.
Discipleship: CLASS 201 - Maturity Class (A 14-16 weeks study to teach on the vital spiritual habits of a mature Christian e.g.
Attentiveness, Daily devotions, Bible Study, Prayer and Fasting,
Ministry of the Holy Spirit, Stewardship, Hearing from God etc.).
People take the maturity covenant and also receive a certificate of participation.
Ministry: CLASS 301 - Ministry Class (A 9 hours class compressed into 3 modules designed to teach on how to know your
SHAPE – what you have been called to do and also the importance and ethics of service). It makes the people to realize that to become a part of the core of the church they must have a place for service or a place of ministry. At the end of this class, people will be assigned to serve in the area of their design. At the end of the class, people take the ministry covenant and are invited to attend CLASS 302 where they are help to lay hold on their area of strength.
CLASS 302: Personal Ministry Interview: A one-on-one ministry interview with a coach to discern people’s SHAPE and fix them in the right ministry. At the end of the interview, a personalized ministry appointment letter is given that shows the primary, secondary and the tertiary ministry of the individual.
To live the word of God to demonstrate the new life in Christ to the
world
Outreach: CLASS 401 - Mission Class (A class designed to teach on how to be an effective witness for Christ and to reach out to the community). People are taught how to use the power of their testimony to reach out to others. In this class, people are taught how to establish a church by themselves any time they find themselves in places where GOFAMINT is not in existence. People are also thought how to engage in missions.
27
Worship: CLASS 501 - Worship Class (A class designed to teach people what it means to worship). Worship is more than singing it is a lifestyle – it is demonstrating the new life of Christ to the world.
Security of Believers: the Purpose of the Journey
“And ensure security of the believer.”
In his identity (1Jn. 3:1-3)
In his worship (Jn. 4:24)
In his fellowship (1Jn. 1:9-11)
In his spiritual development (II Pet. 3:18)
In his calling, gifts and ministry (Gal. 2:6-8)
In his relationship with the world (Matt. 5:13-16)
By the time one completes this journey faithfully one becomes very secured in his/her faith.
Effective Disciple: The Product of the Journey
“Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV)
28
An effective Disciple is one who:
Is pleasing God everyday Worship
Planned for God’s pleasure
Has joined a fellowship of believers Fellowship
Formed for God’s family
Is learning to be a mature Christian Discipleship
Created to become like Christ
Is serving in ministry at church Service
Shaped for service
Is sharing God’s love with unbelievers Outreach

OUR PRACTICE STATEMENT
We believe in this famous quote from Augustine:
"IN ESSENTIALS UNITY, IN NON-ESSENTIALS LIBERTY, IN ALL THINGS CHARITY.
OUR CULTURE
A transformation of environment happens when church leaders embrace the shift in their heart, model it in their lives, and passionately disciple their congregations to become likewise…Whenever we cease to live the values we say we believe in, we destroy that culture and create one that’s less inspiring, less transformational, and less authentic.” (Wayne Cordeiro)
In GOFAMINT, we believe that the culture that we create determines the miraculous that we enjoy in the family. Culture matters! The culture that we set determines our experiences and our influences. Our family identities are invisible megaphones that proclaim to people within and without about who we are and what
32
we do. So, we have come up with a set of cultures that determines our climate, forms our mindset and guides our behaviors. They are:
Culture of appreciation. We always find something good in everyone to appreciate. We do not compete with one another we only complement one another. To do this effectively we enjoin you to “Be Nice.”
Culture of Timeliness. We value time in this church. We encourage every member to be punctual and be regular. 10 minutes before the time the meeting is scheduled to begin is the ideal time to arrive. To do this effectively we enjoin you to “Be Disciplined.”
Culture of Friendliness, warmth and love. We are all friends. We do not make enemies of one another. This makes forgiveness an easy thing for us to do.
Culture of Openness and Trust. We believe that there is no room for suspicion when we are transparent with one another. Don’t keep whatever you are going through to yourself. There is healing in sharing with men and women of understanding.
Culture of Orderliness and Excellence. We believe in doing things decently and in order. This is not about perfection but about giving God our best. Our goal is not to raise professional worshippers but people with a servant heart and pure mind who are committed to giving God the best of their worship and service.
Culture of Liberty without Restraint. We believe that our assignment is to make sure that everyone becomes what God has predestined him to be. So, we give people liberty to express themselves according to their SHAPE. Ours is not a culture of performance but a culture full of grace and truth. We believe more in relationship than rules.
Culture of Faith. We believe that faith is not something we use to collect things from God but, it is a lifestyle that makes the supernatural a natural experience for us. We move by faith and not by sight.
33
Culture of Instant Obedience to the Laws of God. We believe that “more blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.” So, we enjoin everyone to cultivate the discipline of attentiveness and also put into practice the word the Lord is sending to us.
Culture of Righteousness and Holiness. We believe that without holiness no man can see the Lord. We enjoin everyone to commit to living a life that gives glory to God in all things and a life that expresses His nature (I Pet. 1:15-
16). We know we are the epistle the world is reading (II Cor. 3:3).
Culture of Understanding: We know that understanding is a vital spiritual force that makes worship and service a lively and meaningful experience. We do not want people to do things as obligation but from a heart with full understanding of what is to be done. We believe in teaching people for them to have understanding of what to do and do it with willingness of heart
(Is.11:1-7).
Culture of Progressive Learning: We believe that the only way the image of
God in us can be renewed, fed and remain strong is through progressive
“knowledge of Him.” So, we never stop learning in GOFAMINT. We believe it is the only way we can find rest for our souls (Matt.11:28-30).
Culture of One Heart and One Soul. We believe that as we have one heart and one soul, signs and wonders will be a daily occurrence in our midst. God commands the blessing where there is unity. You can see that we speak the same things. That is why we are blessed.
Culture of Faithful and Sacrificial Giving. We believe that giving is not just about money but it is about unlocking the supernatural in our lives (Luke
16:10-11). It is about creating a platform for generational blessings. So, we sincerely desire that every member would contact “The Blessing” by giving faithfully their tithes, offerings and being faithful in other avenues of giving.
Culture of Responsibility and Accountability. We believe that the church is a place of responsibility that demands accountability to God and to one another. So, we also have a system in place to inspect what we expect and also to debrief what we do to provide a platform for excellence.
34
Culture of Daily Devotions. We believe in everyone having a self-feeding program in the word of God on daily basis and we teach people how to do it.
Hearing daily from God gives you daily direction and victory. This is the core of what we do.
Culture of Joy: We believe that joy is the vital sign of a revived soul. We always say that GOFAMINT is the congregation of the happiest people on earth “for the joy of the Lord is our strength.” We know that “with joy we shall draw water from the well of salvation.” So, we teach people to “count it all joy” (James 1:2-4).
Culture of Sacrifice. We believe that there can be no acceptable worship and service without sacrifice. We have to sacrifice our time, talents, energy and resources to advance the kingdom agenda. We enjoin every generation in the church to sacrifice the best they could to move the church forward to the glory of God.
Culture of Soul winning: We do all for souls. The heartbeat of the Lord is for souls to be won into His kingdom. We emphasize much on The Great
Commission. Evangelism for us is not a special program but a culture that should be the lifestyle of every member “as they go.” We desire that every member would “reach one more for Jesus.”
Culture of “Doing Church as a Team: In GOFAMINT, we believe everyone is important, everyone has something great to contribute and everyone is expected to be involved. We lead as a team, function as a team, relate as a team, celebrate as a team and also carry one another’s burden as a team. We do church as a team. We are all working together as one to making this church a glorious one all over the world. We operate as one. Jesus said, “If you have seen me you have seen the Father. He said, “I and my Father are one.” This is how we operate in GOFAMINT.
OUR ACRONYM
GOFAMINT/GFMI
35
OUR TARGET
(WHO ARE WE TRYING TO REACH)
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” Matt.28:19 (NIV)
“... Yes, whatever a person is like, I try to find common ground with him so he will let me tell him about Christ and let Christ save him.” I Cor.9:22(LB).
The whole world is our target and we believe God to disciple all nations. We know this is a huge task and all things are possible to those who believe
OUR CIRCLES OF COMMITMENT
36
GOFAMINT’s objective is to keep people toward the centre by encouraging personal spiritual commitments. Specifically, we call people to six basic commitments. Commitment to Christ, to GOFAMINT, to maturity, to ministry, to missions and to worship.
OUR STRATEGY
(Paul) “I have been all things to all sorts of people that by every possible means I might win some to God. I do all of this for the sake of the Good News” I Cor. 9:22-
23 (PH)
“I have … taught you publicly and from house to house.” Acts 20:20
“Daily they met in the temple and from house to house.” Acts 2:46
In GOFAMINT, We use three primary vehicles for transporting our Strategy:
1. The Weekend Celebrations: Our weekend services are strategically meant to be a corporate gathering of all our body to celebrate God’s goodness. It is to intersect our society in a culturally relevant way so even unbelievers can experience God’s presence in the worship, the fellowship of believers together, the preaching of the
Word, and the prophetic prayer and healing ministry. The Bible declares that in such a celebration service unbelievers will be saved (I Cor. 14:24).
The priority of Weekend services cannot be understated or minimized since worship releases God to reveal Himself and to do great and mighty things in our midst by the virtue of His presence. During our Sunday services and other large group gatherings, we replace our individualistic priorities for the corporate priority of worship unto the
Lord. Then, we go out to make a mark that cannot be erased in our world.
We encourage our members to reach out and invite their friends to enjoy the worship experience and thus create a platform for a bumper harvest of souls into the kingdom.
2. The Transformational Discipleship Process (CLASS 001-501):
37
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will be qualified to teach others.”
Our goal in GOFAMINT is to raise up trained men and women in the house who will advance the kingdom agenda. We do not rely on external aid to grow the church.
Like Abraham raised 318 men from his own house to fight his battle, so, the purpose behind the Transformational Discipleship Classes is to develop matured people, rooted in their faith and able to display the glory and virtues of Him who has called them out of darkness into His marvellous light.
The need to be a continual learner is acute in the body of Christ. When you stop learning, you stop growing. Thus we believe that our on-going educational track of classes is necessary to all GOFAMINT members. The transformational discipleship classes are the basic educational expressions of the priority in our body. These classes are required of all persons desiring to move forward into ministry through
GOFAMINT. We do not compromise the process to make progress and we do not compromise the process to accommodate any one’s giftedness. Our Bible Study time also provide avenue for multiple reinforcement to grow up the saints.
3. Small Groups: Our small groups are the backbone of the church. It is in the home, office, or other more intimate settings where the biblical priorities of fellowship, ministry, discipleship, and training can best take place.
Small groups are like families in that they are to provide loving care and acceptance; here the blessing of the Father can be more individually released so one’s spiritual identity and gift-mix can be identified, nurtured and released.
Small groups are also like compact fighting units where one can be trained in safety, provided for when in need (Acts 2:44-45) and set to undo Satan’s works of darkness
(Acts 10:38).
In short, we believe that a person’s spiritual maturity is more greatly enhanced by heartfelt participation in a small group. A believer will most likely become “spiritually dwarfed” and kept back from God’s best without the meaningful relationship and accountability a small group provides.
In GOFAMINT, we believe that proper participation in these three would lead to a purpose driven life.
38
ABOUT CHRISTIAN DRESSING
We believe that moderation in the key. We have to dress in a way that gives glory to the Lord (I Cor. 10:31; I Tim. 2:9-10; I Pet. 3:3-5). Since the purpose of dressing is to cover up, we enjoin everyone to dress with liberty but in a befitting way. However, we do not preach dressing but we preach Christ, so, everybody is welcome just as they are. We believe that as people get exposed to the truth, their lives become gradually adjusted to the truth they have heard and understood.
OUR ULTIMATE AIM - PERFECTION
HEB.6:1-3
We are not a perfect church, but we are aiming at perfection. Eph. 5:27; I Jn. 3:1-3

While we all know the wrong kind of structure in an organization can be can be cumbersome and hinder growth, we must understand structure is still necessary.
Structure is like the skeletal bones of our body upon which our skin lives and has form. Without this important structure, our bodies would be an incredibly chaotic, lifeless pile of flesh.
So it is with the Church; without the leadership, membership, and the heart standard for these entities, a church would flounder and fall.
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace... Everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.” I Cor. 14:33, 40
In GOFAMINT, we believe:
The People are the “MINISTERS”
The Pastors are the “ADMINISTERS”
OUR AFFILIATION
We are a body of Christ with international scope with the Head Quarters in Nigeria.
OUR LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE
A leader is a person (1) with a God-given capacity and (2) with God-given responsibility to influence (3) a specific group of God’s people (4) toward God’s purpose for the group.
A.
:
In GOFAMINT, we believe in servant leadership.
41
Mk. 10:41-45 “…Instead whoever wants to become great among you must ne your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Phil. 2:5-7 “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus : who, being in the very nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
Servant leaders must…
be teachable, able to receive correction.
be flexible and able to flow with unforeseen circumstances.
have integrity and keep true to themselves and to their commitments.
be willing to serve in some of the “lowest” places.
have a heart to love God above all others.
be accountable so as to avoid traps of Satan.
be gifted at the level of influence to which one is released.
be willing to go wherever he is sent.
Servant leaders…
don’t force people into submission but through their own lifestyle bring others into active participation in the life and ministry of Christ and his church.
have a desire to understand the hurts, pains, joys and temptations, and real needs of the people they are serving.
are team players and seek to see the ministry go forward through the team he or she builds or through others.
Seek to develop others to lead rather than do the ministry by themselves.
are models for others to follow. They are to “set an example for others in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity” (I Tim.4:12). No one’s gifts or abilities can make up for a lifestyle that betrays ones call from the Lord.
42
B. Understanding GOFAMINT Leadership Basics
1. Church Government a.
Present Day Church Government
1) Presbyterian: Board (Presbytery) decides issues including who is Pastor.
2) Episcopal: Priest/Pastor is ultimately responsible for final decisions.
3) Congregational: People decide; vote for Pastor. b.
GOFAMINT: Fluidity of what circumstances require. Presently, we practice
Episcopal/Presbyterian mix.
2. The Role of the Pastor a.
Prayer and the Word (Acts 6:3-4). b.
Equipping (Eph.4:11-12). c.
Training and Releasing (II Tim.2:2).
3. Financial Integrity and Philosophy a.
Our financial spending reflects our values. We spend on the welfare of ministerial and administrative staffs, equipping, missions, buildings, ministry operations, giving, benevolence, training, outreach and other ventures. b.
Biblical Basis for Church Finances
1) Staffing Pastors and Leaders – I Cor. 9:14; I Tim.5:18
2) Giving to those in need – Acts 2:45; 4:34; James 1:27
3) Tithing rooted in the Fatherhood of God – Mal.3:6-12; Num. 18:21;
Gen. 14:20; Heb. 7:4-10; Matt.23:23-24; Lk. 11:42
4) Giving based on Grace – II Cor.9:6-11

OUR MEMBERSHIP STRUCTURE
A. What It Means To Be A Member
The difference between “attenders” and “members” can be summed up in one word
COMMITMENT. Attenders are consumers while members are contributors.
In GOFAMINT, we recognize the need for a formal membership. We ask you to commit to membership for 4 reasons:
1.
A Biblical Reason: Christ is committed to the church.
“...Christ loved the church, and he gave his life for it.” Eph. 5:25
2.
A Cultural Reason: It is an antidote to our society.
We live in an age where very few want to be committed to anything...a job...a marriage... our country. This attitude has even produced a generation of
“church shoppers & hoppers”. People cannot just stay in a place. As a
44
committed Christian, you need to stay in a place to be blessed, to be a blessing and to receive pastoral covering. Commitment always builds character.
3.
A Practical Reason: It defines who can be counted on.
Every team must have a roster. Every school must have an enrolment. Every business has a payroll. Every army has an enlistment. Even our country takes a census and requires voter’s registration. Membership identifies our family.
4.
A personal Reason: It produces spiritual growth.
The New Testament places a major emphasis on the need for Christians to be accountable to each other for spiritual growth. You cannot be accountable when you’re not committed to any specific church family.
B. The Distinguishing Marks of Responsible Church Members
Obviously, most Sunday Worshippers in our churches would claim to be members of that local assembly they attend. It sometimes becomes very difficult to know who’s who. In other words, how many of them are really responsible members? By responsible members, we intend to mean those members of the church that are really committed, dedicated and loyal to the Lord and their local assembly. They are those who make good things happen. They contribute immensely to the growth of that church. Because of their stand and unflinching support for their local assembly and their mother church, they are qualified to enjoy full membership benefits of that church. (II Cor. 8:5)
How do we identify such people in the church?
1.
They are genuinely born again and become new creature. That makes a change in their lifestyle. (Jn. 1:11-13; 3:1-8; II Cor. 5:17; Titus 3:5;
Jas.1:18; 1Pet. 1:23)
2.
They belong to their local assembly not only in membership but also in participation. They do not just sit on the fence criticizing others. Jn.
15:16
3.
They attend meetings regularly and as humanly as possible. Lk.4:16;
Acts 13:14; Heb. 10:25
45
4.
They abide with the biblical principles for Christian lifestyle and their church Statement of Purpose and Membership Covenant. Ps. 119:9,11;
Jn. 7:17; Acts 2:42
5.
They love the brethren. Jn. 13:34-35; I Jn. 3:14
6.
They support all the godly and scriptural programs that will enhance the growth of their church in all areas of church growth. II Cor. 8:1-4
7.
Their Christian life serves as a testimony to those within and outside the church. They live to adorn the gospel through their lifestyle. Phil. 1:27; I
Thess. 4:12; Acts 11:26; II Jn. 4
8.
They are full of faith, filled with the Holy Spirit and reflect the fruit of the Spirit in their life. Acts 6:3, 5
9.
They demonstrate good works and help the less-privilege both within and outside the church. Rom.12:8; Titus 2:14; 3:8, Gal. 6:9-10.
10.
Because of their faithfulness in stewardship and their reality of the importance of money in the ministry of the church, giving to God is no problem to them, thus:
They pay their tithes regularly when it is convenient and when it is not convenient. They hate robbing God or rendering God’s storehouse empty. Mal. 3:8-12
They give their offering cheerfully. II Cor. 9:7
Giving to the Lord’s work is part of their devotion to him. Lk. 8:1-3;
Acts 8:33-37
They donate money to the church in the very capacity that represents
God’s blessings in their lives. They give proportionately. I Cor. 16:2
They realize the fact that money answereth all (material) things, therefore give to support God’s work and His servants. Eccl. 10:19
46
As they give, God also gives them in return. No wonder they are called blessed. Pro. 3:9-10; Mal. 3:12. They are also entitled to full membership benefits of the church in appreciation of their support.
Note: He who contributes to the growth of his church in terms of money and other means shares part of his/her life (sweat) to the church and will normally seek the progress of that church. The Lord Jesus said where your treasure is there will your heart also be. In as much as the Lord Jesus commended the widow who gave two mites (the only thing she had) there is no one too poor that cannot pay tithes or give offerings. Lk. 21:1-3.
Failure to give our money for God’s work is tantamount to lack of commitment and dedication to God and His church.
11.
Responsible church members are not only hearers of the word of God but they are also doers of the word. No wonder they are blessed. Ps.
119:1-8; Jas.1:22-27
12.
They win souls through personal evangelism and corporate activities to depopulate hell and populate the kingdom of God.
13.
They respect their spiritual leaders and follow godly instructions. II
Chro. 20:20; Heb. 13:17
14.
They possess obedience which is the master key to success and blessings. Deut. 28:11-14; Is. 1:19
15.
They compliment the effort of their leaders to make their church grow.
They make complimentary statements about their church. They are builders not destroyers.
16.
They pray for their church ministers and the church as a body (Eph.
6:18-20)
17.
They are ready to abide with the church’s scriptural provision for discipline whenever they violate God’s standard of living for His people.
18.
They are ready to identify with the church wherever they are or wherever they find themselves.
47
Personal Assessment:
Having gone through this lists, take your pen, sincerely and faithfully mark from number 1-18 where your performance is the one required and where your performance is poor, then take the necessary practical approach to correct your wrongs by prayer and immediate actions. You cannot afford to lose full membership benefits, be a responsible member.
C. The Benefits of Church Membership
1.
It identifies a person as a genuine, growing believer (Eph. 2:19; Rom. 12:5).
2.
It provides us a fellowship to support and encourage us in our walk with
Christ (Gal. 6:1-2; Heb.10:24-25).
3.
It provides us with a place to use our gifts in ministry (I Cor. 12:4-27).
4.
It places us under the covering of godly leaders (Heb. 13:17; Acts 20:28-29).
Other benefits include:
Pastoral Covering
Church Marriage
Christening of Baby
Befitting Burial
Financial Assistance during bereavement.
House Dedication
Holy Communion
Other assistance as seems necessary and as occasions warrants.
D. Discipline in the Church
One of the major characteristics of the church of God is its attitude to discipline. In order to maintain holiness and God’s standard of living among the people in His house, church discipline must be practised to minimize human failings and prevent the loss of a sense of direction.
Why Discipline?
48
There was discipline in the early church and because of that; pretenders did not attempt to join the church at the beginning. From the earlier explanation, it is necessary that discipline should be executed to bring about purity in church hence: the two-fold purpose of discipline.
1.
To maintain purity and holiness in the house of God. (1Pet.1:15; Lev.11:45;
Ps.93:5).
2.
To bring about the restoration of the offender whether a brother or a sister
(Ps.51:12; Is.52:8; Gal.6:1).
It should be understood that discipline is not meant for personal retaliation which is not permitted in the church of God. It is purely meant for the two-fold purpose stated above, to retain the dignity of the church and ensure the restoration of the offender.
Note: Thorough investigation should be made in an alleged act of sin levelled against any brother or sister to ensure fair trial or judgement of the case according to the word of God. Facts of the case should be proved beyond reasonable doubt before judgement on the offender is carried out.
1. Two or more witnesses should testify with concrete evidence to convict the offender (See Num.35:30; Deut.17:16; 19:5; Matt.18:16).
2. The offender should confess the fact of the sin he or she committed; he should not hide the truth. (Lev.5:5).
Ways of Executing Discipline in the Church
1.
Personal Offence: Disagreement between brothers should be settled according to Jesus’ injunction in Matt.
18:15-20 a) Settle with the brother; b) If that fails, take one or two brothers; c) If that fails, report to the church; d) If he does not listen to the church, regard him as a heathen or unbeliever.
2.
Those who cause Division in the Church. Rom. 16:17-
18
49
a) Those who teach doctrinal errors with the purpose of drawing followers after themselves. (I Tim. 2:17-18). b) Those who teach with the purpose of diverting attention of people away from the fundamental beliefs and principles of the church. c) Those who walk disorderly. They do not walk according to the teachings of the scripture. II Thess. 3:6-16 d) Those who connive together to rebel against the church authority. Num.16 e) Those who prophesy lies.
3.
Idle Talk. Titus 1:9-11, III John 10. These include gossiping, backbiting, slandering leaders or others, rumour mongering etc.
4.
Sexual Immorality: I Cor. 5:1-13; Heb. 10:26 a) Incest of any form, sex with one’s in-law, one’s sister/brother, one’s child, divorce, rape; homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality. b) Premarital Sex or sex with a member. c) Polygamist:
Note: If a brother/sister had already been a polygamist before coming to know the Lord, he/she should see the pastor for godly counsel on how to handle the situation. The church of God is committed to peace.
5.
Financial Offences: a) Misappropriation of church money, e.g. embezzlement, falsification of receipts, forging signature, etc. i.
He will be made to refund the money. ii.
He will be disciplined according to the gravity of the offence. b) Lack of financial commitment to the church.
6.
Occultism: Witchcraft, charm making, voodoo, talisman, ancestral worship, fraternal movement and sorority, secret society membership, astral travel, palm reading, 900 numbers, contributing money towards occult or shrine festival; eastern religion etc.
50
7.
Fighting & Social flaws: Wife battering, husband battering, abusing or cursing, and physical combat; wild partying, using drugs and illicit behaviours that does not give glory to the Lord and the sanctity of the church.
Note: Anyone found to be involved in any form of the abovementioned sins or vices will be disciplined to cleanse the church of the social vice.
Line of Action:
Any offence that involves members and workers will be handled at the local assembly.
Any offence that involves the leaders will be directed to
Area/District/Regional office for appropriate action.
Church’s Members’ Attitude to the Offender
Negative Reaction: Criticize the offender, mock the offender, rejoice because he or she falls, spread rumours about the offender—all these are not good (Prov.24:16-17).
Positive Action (Gal.6:1-5): Those who are spiritual are to lift him or her up in prayer and counselling. This is to be done by mature people, not just anyone who could get lost in the process.
Offender’s Right Attitude to His or Her Discipline: He or she should comply, and should understand that it is for his or her good (Heb. 12:11-14). Notice verses 7-
10.
Church Members’ Attitude to an Unrepentant Church Member
No members should keep company with such a so-called brother or sister (I Cor.5:9-
13).
Warning and Admonition: I Thess. 5:22; Heb. 12:14; I Cor. 15:33; II Tim. 2:19-22
Our Prayer: It is our prayer that everyone the Lord has brought our way would not make a lifestyle of sinning but instead would live in righteousness and holiness of the days of their lives (I Jn.3:4-10).
51
E. Declaring the Call to Membership in GOFAMINT
A declaration of membership to a local body of believers is an evidence of commitment to belong to that local body. This can be a very beneficial and edifying experience to the person participating in it.
Making agreements or commitments in Bible times often entailed having signs or symbols to remind the parties involved of the commitment they had made (Gen.
31:45 Jacob and Laban; I Sam. 18:1-5 David and Jonathan; Acts 21:18-24 Paul’s
Vows).
In GOFAMINT, we enjoin every committed member to read and sign the membership covenant as an evidence of their commitment to her and her leadership.
This is very biblical. Consider this Scripture:
“Because of all this, we again promise to serve the Lord! And we and our princes and
Levites and priests put our names to this covenant. I, Nehemiah the governor, signed the covenant. The others who signed it were…” Neh. 9:38-10:1 (LB)
We should commit ourselves to follow and obey the Lord regarding what He asks us to do in relating to and serving in the Body of Christ. So, we expect every committed member to obey this instruction without any reservation.
F.Our Membership Covenant
“A Covenant is an agreement between two parties to do and not to do certain things.
Both new and old members of The Gospel Faith Mission International should subscribe to the membership covenant.” (Pastor E.O. Abina)
Having accepted Jesus Christ into my life as my personal Lord and Saviour, upon which I have been baptized by immersion and being in agreement with the
GOFAMINT in her vision, statement of purpose and structure, I now feel led by the
Holy Spirit to join the GOFAMINT church family. In doing so, I commit myself to
God and to other members of this body to do the following:
1. COVENANT OF SERVICE
I will serve the ministry of my church:
• By attending all meetings that concern me.
52
• By discovering my gifts and talents and using them to promote the church.
• By being equipped to serve my pastors and fellow brethren.
• By developing a servant’s heart, to serve as Our Master Jesus did.
As each of you has received a gift (a particular spiritual talent, a gracious divine endowment), employ it for one another’s as (befits) good trustees of God’s many sided grace, fruitful stewards of extremely diverse powers and gifts granted to
Christians by unmerited favor. 1Pet.4:10
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Eph.4:11-12
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. But made Himself nothing taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Phil.2:3-4, 7
2. COVENANT OF DEFENCE
I will defend the unity of my church:
• By acting in love toward other members.
• By avoiding all forms of back biting and tale bearing.
• By following the footsteps of our leaders.
• By paying obedience to all instructions of the leaders.
So let us definitely aim for and eagerly pursue what makes for harmony and for mutual up-building (edification and development) of one another. (Rom.14:19).
Love must be sincere, hate what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. (Rom.12:9-10)
Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word, nor unwholesome or worthless talk
(ever) come out of your mouth; but only such (speech) as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor to those who hear it. (Eph.4:29).
53
“Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be no advantage to you”. Heb. 13:17.
3. COVENANT OF COMMITMENT
I will be a partaker of and share in the burden and responsibility of my church.
• By paying my tithes regularly.
• By praying for the growth of the church.
• By inviting the unsaved to attend our fellowship.
• By paying my vows/pledges when due.
• By giving good offerings during church service.
“To the church of Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and Peace to you. We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. I Thess. 1:2
Then the master told his servant, “Go out to the roads and the country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. Lk.14:23.
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praises to
God.
4. COVENANT OF FAITHFULNESS
I will support the testimony of my church.
• By attending faithfully our church meetings.
• By living a godly life that can challenge the sinners.
Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the day approaching. Heb.10:25
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.
Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in on spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel.
Phil.1:27.
5. COVENANT OF RESPONSIBILITY
54
I will be responsible to my church:
• By witnessing the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ to others.
• By giving to the Lord’s work and ministers of God and the needy.
“Each one of you, on the first day of each week, should set aside a specific sum of money in proportion to what you have earned and use it for the offering”. 1 Cor.
16:2
A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. Lev.27:30
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Gal.6:9-10
He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done. Pro.19:17
If we have sown to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? In the same way, the Lord gave orders that those who preach the Good
News should be supported by those who benefit from it. 1Cor.9:11, 14.
SO HELP ME GOD
G. The Advantages of One’s Subscription to GOFAMINT Membership
Covenants
1.
It affords the Christian an opportunity to be a vessel of honour in the hand of
God (II Tim. 2:20-21).
2.
It grants us the grace of service to God and humanity as our Lord Jesus Christ did (Matt. 20:28).
3.
It affords us an opportunity to be faithful and profitable servants of the Lord
(Matt.25:20-23).
4.
It makes us practical, effective and productive Christians (Jn.15:16).
55
5.
Subscribers to GOFAMINT Membership Covenants actualize their potentials in the ministry (I Cor.12:7).
6.
It exposes us to a life of fulfilment (II Tim. 4:7-8).
7.
It makes one to partner with God and Christ in the salvation of lost sinners (I
Cor. 3:9).
8.
It makes one a responsible Church member who makes good things happen in the church (Lk. 19:17)
9.
It is a way of rapid spiritual development of the subscriber. Instead of being always a learner and not getting to the knowledge of the truth, one becomes a teacher (Eph. 4:13; Heb. 5:12-14). You become the doer and not only a hearer
(James 1:21-25).
10.
Finally, it is the only way that is open for us to be rewarded here and hereafter when the Lord comes to reward His servants (Lk.19:13, 15).
