The Rector’s Message
4th Jan 2015
From the time of the Reformation, the Church of England expanded, following the routes of British
exploration and colonization. It served native peoples and expatriates alike, and all initially considered
themselves loyal to the see of Canterbury. The church’s great missionary societies were important agents
of its growth beyond England. The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (founded in 1699), the
Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (1701), and the Church Missionary Society
(begun in 1799) achieved a global identity.
Vigorous missionary work in the British colonies produced strong churches in such diverse places as
Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, India, and Australia and the West Indies. The church left an impressive
legacy of educational institutions and medical facilities. Consolidation and indigenization characterized
the Anglican mission in its later years. Beginning in the late 19th century, Anglican bishops attended the
Lambeth Conference, held once every 10 years at the residence of the archbishop of Canterbury in
London. The immediate cause of the first meeting in 1867 was a controversy that arose in one of the
colonial churches.
Once the church of the colonizer, it spawned a host of self-directing churches linked by common form
and historical allegiance to the Church of England.
What has come to be known as the Lambeth Quadrilateral defines the essential beliefs of Anglicanism.
The Quadrilateral states four elements essential to the Anglican conception of Christian identity—the
Bible, the Nicene Creed, baptism and Holy Communion, and the episcopate. The Lambeth Conference of
1930 further clarified the nature of Anglicanism when it described the Anglican Communion as
A fellowship within the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, of those duly constituted Dioceses,
Provinces or Regional Churches in communion with the See of Canterbury, which uphold and propagate
the…faith and order as they are generally set forth in the Book of Common Prayer…; promote within
each of their territories a national expression of Christian faith, life and worship; and are bound together
not by a central legislative and executive authority, but by mutual loyalty sustained through the common
counsel of the Bishops in conference.
The Anglican Communion thus holds to the faith as expounded by the Scriptures and by the early Church
Fathers. It respects the authority of the state but does not submit to it, and it equally respects the freedom
of the individual. The Anglican Communion does not seek to evade the challenges of the world or to live
a life separate from it. Basing its doctrines on the Bible, the Anglican Communion allows a remarkable
latitude of interpretation by both clergy and laity.

Your Health and you by Dr. Michael Goodluck #89
LEG CRAMPS
Leg cramps are a common and usually harmless condition where the
muscles in your leg suddenly become tight and painful.
It usually occurs in the calf muscles, although it can affect any part of your
leg, including your feet and thighs. After the cramping has passed, you may have pain and tenderness in
your leg for several hours.
Three out of four cases occur at night during sleep.
What causes leg cramps?
Leg cramps can occur for no apparent reason, known as idiopathic leg cramps, or as a symptom or
complication of a health condition, known as secondary
leg cramps.
Causes of secondary leg cramps can include:
pregnancy, exercise, certain types of medication, such as statins(medicines
that help lower cholesterol levels), liver disease
During a cramp, your muscles suddenly contract (shorten), causing pain in
your leg. This is known as a spasm, and you cannot control the affected
muscle. The cramp can last from a few seconds to 10 minutes. When the
spasm passes, you will be able to control the affected muscle again.
When to see your Doctor
Speak to your Doctor if your leg cramps are affecting your quality of life;
for example, if you have frequent leg cramps or they are interfering with
your sleep.
Your Doctor will ask about your symptoms and examine your legs and feet. They may also ask if you
have other symptoms, such as numbness or
swelling, which may be a sign that you have secondary leg cramps caused
by an underlying condition.
In this case, you may need further tests, such as blood tests and urine tests,
to rule out other conditions.

Mission Prayer
Almighty God, we give thanks that you have consecrated this house
of Prayer and call together a community to worship you. As we
celebrate with joy 175 years of work and witness to the faith of
Jesus Christ, we remember all bishops, priests, deacons and lay
persons who served in the church of St. Paul’s Calliaqua. Empower
us to love like Jesus and serve you with a deep passion. So transform
us by the renewing of our hearts and minds and enlighten us
together with all the saints to grasp how high and deep and wide
and long is your love. Strengthen us in body, mind and spirit that
we may strive toward heavenly things. Through our communion
with you, enable us to reach out to others with a taste of your grace
and love, as you lead us step by step all of the days of our life.
We ask these mercies through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
