Constructions Project
Analytic Geometry Construction Standards
G.CO.12: Perform basic constructions using a variety of tools and methods.
1. Copy a segment
2. Copy an angle
3. Bisect a segment
4. Bisect an angle
5. Construct perpendicular lines
6. Construct the perpendicular bisector of a line segment
7. Construct a line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line
G.CO.13
1. Construct an equilateral triangle so that each vertex of the equilateral triangle is on the circle.
2. Construct a square so that each vertex of the square is on the circle.
3. Construct a regular hexagon so that each vertex of the regular hexagon is on the circle.
This construction project will count as a test grade and is due no later than your class period on October
31, 2014.
To ensure students are not waiting until the last minute to begin working on the project the following
check dates will be included.
October 17, pages 1-3 must be completed and turned in. Total points: 30
October 24, pages 4-7 must be completed and turned in. Total points: 40
October 31, pages 8-10 must be completed and turned in. Total points: 30
These pages should be placed in the 3 prong folder with the cover page and turned in during class on the
date assigned. The folders will be returned so students can add the additional pages.
There are videos located on the county website with instructions on how to complete theses
constructions. To locate the videos:
1. go to the school website,
2. in the upper right corner click the student icon
3. scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Virtual Tutoring link
4. On this page find the link for 10th grade math
5. Scroll down until you find the section on Geometry Constructions.

*You may also use Google or any other teaching video to complete the constructions.
DIRECTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT






The construction project should be completed on blank white copy paper.
The construction project should be completed using a pencil or colored pencils. (Ink will not be
accepted)
The construction project should be neat and clear of stray marks, placed in a three prong folder.
The construction project should consist of 10 pages of construction and a cover page with your
name and class period written on it.
The curves drawn with the compass and other auxiliary lines used to construct should be visible
on the paper.
You must follow the detailed instructions for each page of the project. These instructions are
below.
Project Instructions:
Page 1 - Copy a segment
Using a ruler, draw a 5 inch line segment close to the top of the page. Label it segment AB. This is the
segment you are to copy. Using a straightedge draw a line segment longer than segment AB. Study the
video on copying a line segment and use a compass to construct segment CD which is congruent to
segment AB.
Page 2 -Copy an angle.
Using a straightedge, draw an acute angle, <ABC, at the top of the page. Using a compass and
straightedge construct <DEF congruent to <ABC
Page 3 - Bisect a segment
Using a straightedge, draw a 6 inch line segment in the middle of the page. Using a compass and
straightedge, bisect the segment. Label the midpoint as point M.
Page 4 - Bisect an angle
Using a straightedge, draw an acute angle, <XYZ in the middle of the page. Using a compass and
straightedge, bisect the angle. Label the bisector Ray YT
Page 5 - Construct perpendicular lines
Using a straightedge, draw a horizontal line segment MN in the middle of the page. Using a compass and
straightedge, construct a line RT that is perpendicular to segment MN.
Page 6 - Construct the perpendicular bisector of a line segment.
Using a straightedge, draw a 5 inch horizontal line segment RS in the middle of the page. Using a
compass and straightedge, construct the perpendicular bisector of segment RS. Label the midpoint M.
Page 7 - Construct a line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.
Using a straightedge, draw a 12cm horizontal line in the middle of the page. Draw point B a short
distance above the line. Using a compass and straightedge construct a line that goes through point B
and is parallel to the first line.
Paper for pages 8, 9 and 10 will be provided to you with a circle drawn on the page.
Page 8 - Construct an equilateral triangle so that each vertex of the equilateral triangle is on the circle.
Using the paper provided, use a compass and straightedge to construct an equilateral triangle inscribed
in the circle.
Page 9 - Construct a square so that each vertex of the square is on the circle.
Using the paper provided, use a compass and straightedge to construct a square inscribed in the circle.
Page 10 - Construct a regular hexagon so that each vertex of the regular hexagon is on the circle.
Using the paper provided, use a compass and straightedge to construct a regular hexagon inscribed in
the circle.
