occurring tonight; walk the neighborhoods and show support for crime-prevention initiatives,
neighborhood watch groups, and safer communities

o LU&Z – No members present, update at next meeting
o Safety – Frank Walsh
 Did not get a report from the DI School principal

take the EMT course; 50% of firefighters fatalities are cardiac arrest; new equipment;
very improved department from two years ago

 Mayor saw first-hand the difficulties of the intersection at Seven Farms and D I
Drive; there was a recent pedestrian accident at this intersection; no further
progress to report

 The Committee is working the Etiwan Park’s circular line of trees; pruning according to
the City specifications (similar to how the City trims the trees along the Battery); two
more months of work to complete the area
o Web Site
 382 “Likes” on Facebook
 There is a need to share with friends on DI; following the alligator attack on a dog, over
500 people saw the alligator sign on Facebook, shared by friends and “Likes”
Membership – Laurie Steinke
 Currently maintaining the member database, need new ideas; contact Membership via
Facebook or on the website
Appreciation: President Williams gave a nod to the committee chairs and thanked them and their
committees for the hard work and dedication to DINA; he urged everyone to step up and volunteer
some of the Committees and the Board
Guest Speakers
o Mark Wilbert, Director, Hurricane Preparedness, City of Charleston
 Held position for less than one year; retired from Coast Guard;
 the past year has taught him: work closely with Berkeley County (google “ready Low
Country” for preparedness information); disasters are unexpected, overwhelming,
environment will be endangered, and prepare for all hazards
 Three sectors of Government: Local (they concern themselves with local issues, eg:
roads); State (support local); Federal (they supply all of the resources, eg: food {MRE’s},
water materials)
 Key message – you are responsible for the first 72-hours, do not expect any help until
then (that is how long it takes the Feds to respond)
 Groups like DINA can be very helpful in a disaster
 Look for stores with generators if you need supplies
 Be prepared; four simple steps
 You need a survival kit – battery, flashlights. Medicine, eyeglasses, don’t forget
your pets
 Make a plan – do not wait for the mandatory evacuation order (you may as well
stay and ride it out); let people know your plans; know your neighbors and look
after them
 Daniel Island is Zone B
 Man-made disasters – Use you radio for information (emergency band, battery
operated); close off house and turn on the A/C; do not use your cell phone to call, text is
better than voice
o Mac McQuillen
 Gave a brief update on his effort to become a member of the Berkeley County School
Board (integrity, transparency, and honesty); local attorney, member of the B. C.
Republican Party Executive Committee and the Lord Berkeley Conservation Trust
o Jane Baker, VP Community Services
 Security Camera update: $25K grant for two cameras, they are ready to go and there
will be signs alerting drivers that they are on, license plate recognition may not be
available this year but will be soon
 DI Commemorative Park: the DI Community Fund to challenge residents to adopt a
brick, $50 fort the first two hundred - “Commit to a Brick”
 President Williams thanked Jane for her efforts in getting the tree light on at the Seven
Farms and DI Drive intersection

doors and to be the eyes of the Police Department; call dispatch number with tips on
crime (743-7200); do not leave guns or valuables in your car (recent gun thefts in
unlocked cars has not led to any criminal activity – yet!)
Ed Gracely, Detective
 Can only do his job with help from residents
Sgt. Trevor Shelor, Crime Prevention Specialist
