Founder’s Hall Wireless Site Survey
Executive Summary:
It has been reported that some students have been getting dropped from the wireless network of
Founder’s Hall at SIUe. I have been hired to do a wireless site survey for Founder’s Hall and try
to analyze what would cause this problem. From the data I have collected, it is safe to say that
the dropping of networks must have been a fluke. The connection is solid throughout the
building and very dependable.

Narrative:
While using Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, I was able to conduct the research on the access points that
you see above. The signal strength, in dBm, was generated from a scan of the middle of each
floor of Founder’s Hall. I used data from these scans because it would generate an average of
each floor and was the most open part of each floor. When combining the results from the scans
of each floor I found roughly 130 unique MAC addresses. When doing the scan, many of the
access points were picked up on each floor and therefore varied in signal strength.
From the data, I could see that the best connection came, primarily, from the 3rd floor. I also
noticed that on the North and South stairwells, connection was weak. This was apparent to me
before the survey because of the lack of connection on my cell phone when previously walking
in those stairwells.
The access points provided by SIUE are the ones with the SSIDs of SIUE-WPA and SIUE-WIFI.
SIUE-WIFI does not have an encryption protocol and is open to anyone attempting to get on the
network. Some access points that were picked up did not have either of these names and are
rogue access points. These networks were setup by a student or faculty to have their own private
network.
The use of Xirrus showed me that conducting a wireless site survey can be critical in analyzing
the health of a wireless LAN. In regards to Founder’s Hall, it is crucial to have as many access
points as it does because of the amount of users on the network at any point in time.
