Reflection of summer reading essay
Reflection, according to the Oxford English Dictionary:
The action or process of thinking carefully or deeply about a particular subject; contemplation, deep or serious thought or
consideration, esp. of a spiritual nature.
The process or faculty by which the mind observes and examines its own experiences and emotions; intelligent selfawareness, introspection.
Task
Write a thoughtful, two (2) page reflection of your summer reading essay on Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone.
Use the essay rubric and your teacher’s comments /feedback chart/ assessment to guide this reflective piece.
-Identify and discuss one (1) conceptual element of the essay criteria, such as, explanation of the Nafisi
quote and your idea of the link to ALWG, the development of your ideas throughout the essay, your
choice and use of text to prove your claim. Briefly summarize your main points from the summer reading
essay though you may quote yourself directly if you practice brevity.
-Identify and discuss one (1) style element of the essay criteria (compelling and intentional word choice,
seamless flow of quotations and analysis). Directly quote your essay when discussing your stylistic
choices.
-Assign yourself a grade for the summer reading essay, based on your performance according to the
rubric and your teacher’s comments. Provide a rationale for the grade that you assigned yourself.
Form
2 pages, typed, single-spaced. You may organize this paper as you wish, but you must have a clear method of
organization. This is a personal reflection and should utilize first-person POV. The piece should be analytical
and creative.
