Please note that there is an error on pages 57-59. We have been in contact with both Jeannie Fulbright and Apologia, and this is the response that was given: “There are three ways atoms bond: 1. 2. 3. Electrons can be transferred from one atom to another = ionic bond Electrons can be shared between neighboring atoms = covalent bond Electrons can be shared with all atoms in a material = metallic bond Thank you for pointing out an error that needs to be fixed. We will need to add a description of #3 to the text. For your co-op, please note that metallic bonding is when in some materials each atom “gives up” an outer electron that then floats freely and is shared by all the other atoms in that material. This mainly takes place in metallic elements and explains the many properties of metals (good conductors of electrical charge).” Watch the video entitled, “Atoms and Elements” Class.
