too fun not to do in class so it will be done before it is covered in the
reading.
NOTE: Foldables are either self-created or taken from:
http://www.homeschoolshare.com/chemistry.php
NOTE: This chapter covers a lot of material very quickly. Most chapters will not
be this chaotic.

before we cover atoms, which is next week, so while you can encourage
thoughts as to why it happened, don’t worry if students don’t know the
answer.

Lesson 3, part 2
Due by: ______________________________
For all lessons in this book, please feel free to do the “Try This” activities at home
unless told specifically not to. (Some we will cover in class.)

 Read pages 51-53 (until “The Periodic Table of Elements”) of the book.
o Complete Periodic Table foldable, glue to worksheet.
 Read pages 55-59 of the book.
Please note that there is an error on pages 57-59. We have been in
contact with both Jeannie Fulbright and Apologia, and this is the response
that was given:
“There are three ways atoms bond:
1.
2.
3.
Electrons can be transferred from one atom to another = ionic bond
Electrons can be shared between neighboring atoms = covalent bond
Electrons can be shared with all atoms in a material = metallic bond
Thank you for pointing out an error that needs to be fixed. We will need to add a description of
#3 to the text. For your co-op, please note that metallic bonding is when in some materials each
atom “gives up” an outer electron that then floats freely and is shared by all the other atoms in
that material. This mainly takes place in metallic elements and explains the many properties of
metals (good conductors of electrical charge).”
 Watch the video entitled, “Atoms and Elements”
 Class. Atom bonding – need to figure out.
