NOKOMIS SCHOOL ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND RESPONSIBILITY POLICY PREAMBLE : Nokomis School strives to provide a high level of academic programming in which all students are given opportunity to excel. Academic integrity, responsibility, and honesty are key values that need to be embraced in conjunction with this goal. Nokomis School expects students to maintain a high level of these key values in the pursuit of their studies. DEFINITIONS : ACADEMIC INTEGRITY – Evidence of one’s own learning through the demonstration of responsibility, honesty, trust and respect. Actions that demonstrate a lack of academic integrity may include but are not limited to : Cheating Plagiarism Having others complete the work Buying papers from the internet Resubmission of previously submitted work Missing due dates CHEATING – Cheating occurs when you present as your own the work of another. Some examples of cheating may include but are not limited to : Copying and/or providing for another an exam, assignment, project, or other classroom work. Receiving/providing test questions/answers prior to an exam. Copying answers during an exam or using “cheat sheets” during an exam. Using programmed technology unless permitted by the teacher. File sharing or copying files from another student. PLAGIARISM – Plagiarism is the taking of another’s word, thoughts, or ideas and presenting them as your own either deliberately or accidentally. Some examples of plagiarism may include but are not limited to : Using all or part of another’s speech, paper, or idea as your own. Copying a passage word for word and not using quotation marks. Copying and pasting passages from the internet. Not acknowledging or documenting sources. 1. Horizon School Division’s Assessment Beliefs General – Assessment must be Fair Curriculum-based Accountable Transparent Process Assessment will be an accurate reflection of students’ learning. Assessment will be planned, timely, continuous, and responsive. Varied instructional and assessment strategies will be used to meet student needs. Assessment will align with curriculum and be respectful of different learning styles. Student Engagement Assessments will involve students in the process. Students will be made clearly aware of assessment expectations. Students’ learning will includes continuous and timely feedback. Communication Assessment will communicate clear purpose, identifiable goals, and expectations. Communication about student assessment will be timely and ongoing. Strong assessment practices will enhance accountability. 2. Duties and Accountability of Students – Not excluding sections 150 and 151 of the Education Act, Nokomis School believes that students : Have the responsibility to maintain regular and punctual attendance. Have the responsibility to NOT participate, either directly or indirectly, in cheating or plagiarism. Have the responsibility to catch up on missed work or exams by making arrangements with the classroom teacher. Have the responsibility to meet deadlines as established by the classroom teacher. Are accountable to the classroom teachers , staff, and administration of the school while under the supervision of the school. 3. Duties of Teachers – Not excluding section 231 of the Education Act, Nokomis School believes that teachers have the responsibility to : Clearly communicate their expectations , potential consequences, and exceptions to students surrounding the issue of academic integrity. 4. Duties of In-School Administration – Not excluding section 175 of the Education Act, Nokomis School believes that school based administration has the responsibility to : Ensure that this policy is clearly communicated to students and parents on a yearly basis. Ensure that teachers are clearly communicating their expectations surrounding this policy to students and parents at the beginning of the year. Screen breaches of this policy when asked to by classroom teachers. Take part in remediation discussions as part of this policy when asked to by classroom teachers. Review this policy on a yearly basis. 5. Expectations and Procedures for Timeliness of Assignments – Nokomis School expects students to : Hand in original, non-plagiarized work by the due dates established by the classroom teacher to the best of their ability. Make alternative arrangements with the classroom teacher for work or exams that may be missed or have been missed. 6. Exceptions – Nokomis School understands that there may be extenuating circumstance that may prevent students from carrying out their duties. Although exceptions to this policy should be rare, consideration may be given through the professional judgment of the classroom teacher for circumstances like but not limited to : Illness Excused absence Number of violations 7. Consequences – Breach of academic integrity is considered to be a serious matter at Nokomis School. All incidents will be screened by the classroom teacher may be screened by the inschool administration. Consequences for breach of academic integrity may include but are not limited to : Loss of marks, up to and including the full value of the assignment or test. Phone call home. Verbal and/or written reprimand. Loss of privileges. Recess detention 8. Remediation – Regardless of the nature of the consequence, the purpose is to make the individual aware of the severity of his/her actions, to stress the importance of academic integrity and to help ensure the behavior is not repeated. In cases where a breach of academic integrity has occurred, remediation may be provided after due process has been followed. Remediation may include but is not limited to : Redoing part or a complete assignment/test for full marks. Redoing part or a complete assignment/test for partial marks. Redoing part or a complete assignment/test for no marks, but to avoid an incomplete mark. 9. Communication of Policy – This policy will be clearly communicated to students at the beginning of each year in conjunction with the course syllabus from the classroom teacher. There may be additional reminders of this policy over the course of the year when deemed required. This policy will also be included with the first newsletter of the new school year, posted on the school’s website, and emailed home to each family.
