P UBLIC C ONSULTATION ON THE D EVELOPMENT OF P OLICY ON THE
R EPATRIATION OF H UMAN R EMAINS AND B URIAL O BJECTS FROM
A RCHAEOLOGICAL S ITES IN N UNATSIAVUT
The Nunatsiavut Government (NG) does not currently have approved policy on the repatriation of human remains and burial objects from archaeological contexts in
Nunatsiavut. The importance of addressing this issue has been recognized and acknowledged by the Nunatsiavut Executive Council (NEC) which has given the
Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism a mandate to conduct consultations.
The consultations will take place in each of the five Inuit Communities, and in Upper
Lake Melville between June 10 th and June 18 th , please see the attached schedule. The results of these consultations will help the NG develop policy on this issue. A draft document will be posted publically before being taken to the NEC for final review and approval. The policy will then be reviewed and evaluated at regular intervals.
Feedback from beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement will also be sought through the NG website, through social media and using avenues like the
Nunatsiavut Silatâtani Newsletter. Additional information on the issue will be posted on the NG website in the coming weeks. Please help us ensure that the needs and wishes of Labrador Inuit properly inform NG policy on this important issue.
