Guerrero 1 Diana Guerrero Professor Wingate English 114B 18 April 2013 Essay Quote Sheet The Tattooed Soldier By Hector Tobar “Voy a ser uno de los ‘homeless.’ It did not seem right to him that a man who loved to read, a man with Crimen y Castigo and El Idiota and other works of real literature scattered on the floor of his apartment, would be called this ugly word” (Pg 5). New Relief effort on U.S./Mexico Border A lot of people are suffering," said Sean Carroll, S.J., executive director of the initiative. He noted an increased number of deportees finding their way to a care center where deported migrants can get a hot meal and help with medical needs. "We're serving a lot of people," he said. "We want to respond to them and relieve that suffering, and through that we hope to also be transformed. The Tattooed Soldier By Hector Tobar “I can’t get any lower than this. This is the lowest. Where did I go wrong?” (Pg 51). The Tattooed Soldier By Hector Tobar Dressed in rags. Antonio hadn’t thought much lately about what they looked like. He had begun to forget the threads that dangled from the bottom of his pants, the I chose this passage because this was when Antonio became homeless, and he did not choose to become one. He could not believe what was happening to him, in Guatemala he was an educated man and coming here he has struggled to get where he was. Such a drastic change left him feeling hopeless and I think this is very important because it describes how many other immigrants may be going through the same thing. This quote explains how some people help those in need. In my essay I do write about how homeless people do not choose to be homeless rather how they became to be homeless and this quote supports my argument. Also it helps me provide information on how others help the homeless. This is very important because Antonio has hit rock bottom at this point. He is hopeless and depressed, as a homeless man who is going through a lot, it is very hard for them to come back up. They do not choose to be homeless but cannot help it at this point. This quote connects to the last explanation I had. As I mentioned, Antonio did not chose to become homeless but as time progressed he forgot he was homeless. He forgot about his dirty skin and his ripped clothes. A homeless person starts to forget what they look like or Guerrero 2 little holes that had appeared in his shirt, the layer of sweat and grime that perpetually covered his skin” (Pg 71). who they are. The tattooed Soldier By Hector Tobar “The vacant property, the plastic shelters, the ruined homes. The more he thought about it, the more Antonio began to feel a Kinship with the flattened earth around him. New Relief effort on U.S./Mexico Border By America Press “When the women arrive, they don’t know what to do. They don’t have any money; they don’t have any food and our families don’t know what’s become of us.” This quote just describes how the homeless live and I think it’s very sad that they live this way. Introduction to the Homeless By “Homelessness was no longer an isolated problem, the result of local circumstances. Instead, it was widespread, the result of a worldwide economic collapse, and local governments and charities were unable to cope with the enormity of the problem.” This passage from this article addresses how women who are send back to Mexico trying to pass the border have it when they return. The patrols guarding the border do not send these people back to their home, rather they send them just over the border. They are left without shelter and food. This quote definitely had depth. I choose it because what is explained is true. Many are in fact left homeless because of economic collapses. Those who are left homeless are not left homeless by choice but by a nation problem, many loose their job, don’t make enough money, etc.
