Elective vs. Personal credits How to Register Withdrawing from a class Assessment & Attendance Requirements Publication of results & Exam Boards Contact Details Elective Student Registration Form The Centre for Lifelong Learning (CLL) offers a varied portfolio of classes, which gives the people of Greater Glasgow and the surrounding areas access to university-level education. Many of these classes are credit-bearing Open Studies (OS) classes and credit from these OS classes can be accumulated towards a University of Strathclyde Open Studies Certificate. Selected Open Studies classes offered on the Evening and Weekend Programme (EWP) may also be taken by current undergraduate students as elective classes. Elective Vs. Personal Credits Some Undergraduate degree programmes allow a portion of the required credits of study to be taken from classes offered across the University, to allow students to pursue their individual interests/skills as part of their undergraduate study. CLL classes offered on the Evening and Weekend Programme may be taken by current undergraduate students to meet their elective requirements. (This option is only open to undergraduates who are completing their full degree at Strathclyde and not to exchange/Erasmus students, here on a temporary basis.) Please note that CLL will only register students as ‘elective’ where they plan to use credits towards their current degree of study AND have their proposed CLL class(es) approved by their Advisor of Studies. Students can take up to 20 credits of ‘elective’ classes from the CLL Open Studies Programme. Elective classes may only be selected from credit-bearing classes offered on the Evening and Weekend Programme, subject to availability. The current Programme can be viewed from mid-August at: http://www.strath.ac.uk/cll/alp/ewp/ Can I take a CLL class if the credits are not being used towards my current degree of study? Yes, students are welcome to take CLL classes for their own personal benefit. However, students registering for classes for personal credits must pay the course fees themselves, as these classes are not part of their current degree. Classes are offered at a concession fee if the applicant is a full-time undergraduate student of the University of Strathclyde. The concession fee is two thirds of the class fee indicated on the Evening & Weekend Programme. How to Register for an elective class offered by CLL Students must declare their intention to take a class(es) as an elective at the point of enrolment (and following the process outlined here). This cannot be applied retrospectively once classes are underway. In order to register as an elective student on a class delivered through CLL, students must complete an Open Studies Elective Student Registration form (see attached). Registration forms must be approved by an Advisor of Studies and then returned in person or by post to Janice MacWhirter in CLL. There are limited elective places available on CLL classes- classes may quickly reach maximum number or classes with insufficient enrolments may be cancelled. It is therefore in the interest of students to enrol early. CLL cannot guarantee that chosen classes will run if they do not reach viable numbers. Once the CLL has confirmed enrolment on a class, elective students should ensure that the appropriate class module code is added to their PEGASUS record. Failing to update PEGASUS will cause in a delay in publishing student results. Please note that it is the students’ responsibility to ensure that their PEGASUS record is up-to-date and to keep CLL and their Advisor of Studies informed of their study choices. Withdrawing from a class If personal circumstances or other commitments prevent regular class attendance or completion of coursework, students should discuss this with the Tutor. Students who decide to withdraw from the class will not receive an academic penalty. However there are limited places on classes, so in the event of withdrawal, we ask students to inform CLL of their decision in writing or by phone as soon as possible to free up a place for another student to register where possible. Please note that students should also contact their Advisor of Studies and ensure their PEGASUS record is updated to reflect the change in classes. Assessment & Attendance Requirements At the start of each class, students will be given information regarding that class’ assessment requirements. Students are expected to read through the class documentation carefully. In addition to the individual class assessment requirements, elective students are required to attend at least 70% of classes and submit all elements of assessment in accordance with the class guidelines in order to achieve a PASS result. Students who are unable to attend classes are expected to notify their class tutor, as well as completing a self-certification online via PEGASUS (using the Personal Circumstances link). Where absence is the result of sickness, students should submit a medical certificate to Student Business, as per University regulations. Failing to meet the attendance and/or assessment requirements will result in a FAIL result. Publication of results & Exam Boards Initial results and feedback will be returned to students via the class tutor. However, all class results are subject to approval by the Open Studies Board of Examiners which meets in February, April, May and August. Class results will be returned to PEGASUS by the CLL Programmes Administrator. Please note that results for classes with an April start will not be available until after the Board of Examiners. Students should not register for April start classes if the results are needed for June graduations. Contact Details The reception desk at CLL is open to receive registration and answer enquiries.
