Oil spill is the release of oil into the environment, which stays and extends on the
surface of water, till it will not be cleaned up. The most efficient clean-up method
is to create the floating fence able to prevent it from extending, then suck the
polluted water out with the special pump and dump it into the sewage. This
solution is the best, because it’s the cheapest, the quickest and the simplest.
The suggested solution works well, because of the availability of the materials for
the fence (Styrofoam, plastic bottles, pieces of wood, cork and garbage) and the
pump is powerful enough to suck out the oily water. There might be danger that
the water level of Hoan Kiem Lake will decrease because of the pump having
sucked too much water. The positive impact of my solution is that it’s quick: the
fence can be made out of anything that doesn’t sink; cheap: it doesn’t require
expensive equipment and materials; and simple: it doesn’t require special skills.
Furthermore, if the turtle accidentally will come to the surface right in the oil spill
area, it will touch the organic oil, not the chemicals (if the chemical method was
used), or fire (if the controlled burning method was used). The disadvantages of
this method are minor: though efficient the method doesn’t provide 100%
guarantee to eliminate the oil spill problem. The negative impact on the turtle is
that it can be stressed and its shell will become dirty.
The solution of insulation the oil spill area with the floating fence, and polluted
water removal with the pump seems the best, because of its economic benefits.
First of all, the cost of the materials to be used for the fence is very low, because
the Styrofoam, plastic bottles, cans and unsinkable garbage are available all over
the place. Second, it is very time effective; therefore it contributes to method’s
cost reduction. It’s simple because it doesn’t involve complicated and expensive
equipment. Even if this method seems perfect, it has its weaknesses and
strengths, so it’s recommended to weigh pros and cons before usage of this
method in this kind of situations.
