r Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Network CFAR Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Network 9th National Scientific Meeting Hosted by the Johns Hopkins University Center for AIDS Research (JHU CFAR) Mentoring Day October 28, 2015 The Mentoring Day of the CFAR Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Network (SBSRN) Scientific Meeting will take place on October 28, 2015. The mentoring day will connect early career investigators with senior investigators in the HIV/AIDS research field. During the Mentoring Day and the SBSRN scientific meeting, mentees will have opportunities to engage with NIH representatives and senior investigators regarding their careers and plans for grant submissions and career development. APPLICATION DEADLINE is July 1, 2015 GOALS OF MENTORING DAY: • To provide mentoring and support to early career social and behavioral sciences (SBS) investigators • To facilitate linkages between early career and senior investigators • To provide opportunities for feedback and networking with NIH program officers • To provide constructive feedback on research and grant ideas, in order to increase the success of NIH-funded applications. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR APPLICANTS: • Be within 5 years of having completed a terminal degree and have no independent R01 funding • Interested in conducting research that addresses social or behavioral dimensions of HIV/AIDS. This includes (but is not limited to) basic social and behavioral research, research on treatment or prevention, barriers to care and treatment, and behavioral and structural interventions, and it may be domestic or international in focus • Have specific plans to submit a social and behavioral sciences NIH grant application as Principal Investigator (PI) within the 12 months following the meeting • Preference may be given to those affiliated with a CFAR institution, AIDS Prevention Center, or NICHD-funded Population Studies Center and interested in HIV-related research, and have a letter of support from its Director • Submit all application materials by 5:00 pm on July 1, 2015 • Applications for the mentoring day will be competitively reviewed by a selection committee. EXPECTATIONS OF SELECTED MENTEES: • Attend both the Mentoring Day (10/28/15) and the SBSRN scientific meeting (10/28/15-10/30/15) in Baltimore, MD • Submit a draft concept page with your application describing your current grant idea; this concept will be discussed in small groups during Mentoring Day and allow the conference organizers to match mentors to mentees • Prior to the meeting, prepare Specific Aims for this concept to share with and solicit feedback from mentors and meeting attendees • Deliver a 10-15 minute PowerPoint presentation of the current research idea • Present an empirically-based scientific poster of a current research project during an evening reception on the first day of the SBSRN scientific meeting (10/29/15); this may be related or unrelated to the topic discussed in small groups. COST TO SELECTED MENTEES: • Mentees will be responsible for their own registration fees and associated travel costs; local CFARs are encouraged to support mentee travel costs • A limited number of competitive and geographically diverse scholarships may be available to provide travel support.
