questions that you found to be the most challenging.
1. What was the Oregon Treaty and how did it change the United States’ border in the
northwest? A treaty between the United States and Great Briatin which divided the Oregon
territory into two pieces at the 49th parallel. The United State gained control of the southern
half (consisting of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana). This happened in 1846.

2. What was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and how to it change the border of the United
States? This treaty ended the Mexican-American War in 1848. Mexico admitted defeat and
gave the United States a large piece of land in the American southwest consisting of the
present day states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and parts of New Mexico and
Colorado.

3. What was the Gadsden Purchase and how to it change the border of the United States? In 1853
the United States paid $10 million dollars to Mexico to obtain a small piece of land that
formed the southern border of Arizona and part of New Mexico. This was the final step in
achieving manifest destiny.

4. What does the word annexation mean? Which current state did the United States annex in the
mid-1800s? annexation means to join together. The United States annexed the republic of
Texas in 1845. Mexico was upset by this action because they claimed that Texas belonged to
them. This annexation eventually led to the Mexican-American war.

5. Identify two factors that drew immigrants to the United States in the 1840s & 1850s.

9. Why did people begin to form labor unions in the early-mid 1800s? People formed labor
movements in the mid-1800s in hopes of improving working conditions (safer factories,
shorter work days, paid vacation & sick time) and improving the pay (higher wages)

10. Who was Dorothea Dix? She was a reformer who pressured the U.S. government to improve its
treatment of mentally ill people. She encouraged states to build better hospitals for the
mentally ill

11. Who was Horace Mann? He was a reformer who wanted to improve education in the United
States. He pressured states to make education mandatory for all children in the US because he
believed that if kids had an education, they could make their lives better.

movement. She fought for greater equality for women. She believed that all women in the
