SONNY RODEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
2015
The Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually by the Virginia
Water Environment Association (VWEA) to students enrolled at Virginia universities in an environmental engineering or science graduate program.
The scholarship honors Mr. L. H. “Sonny” Roden, Jr., a dedicated servant of
VWEA (formerly the Virginia Water Pollution Control Association). Mr.
Roden was the Chief of the Division of Wastewater Treatment of the
Department of Public Utilities for the City of Richmond and served VWEA as the Secretary-Treasurer for over a decade in the 1960’s and 70’s. He also represented VWEA on the Certification Board for Virginia Water and Wastewater Works
Operators. Mr. Roden left a legacy of service to the organization that is still felt today, and it is
VWEA’s hope that he will continue to inspire future leaders of the industry.
The objectives of this scholarship are to support our local universities and to promote student participation in VWEA. The award shall be $2,000 to the first place winner. Criteria for the scholarship shall be as follows: a. Students must be enrolled in an environmental engineering or science graduate program at a Virginia university, full- or part-time, attending in the Spring and Fall 2015 semesters.
Eligible students must have a 3.25 or greater grade point average. b.
Judging of the applicants will be performed anonymously by the VWEA Scholarship Committee using a weighted ranking system. The selection criteria are as follows: a.
Academic Performance (10 points) b.
Participation in VWEA events (10 points) c.
Extracurricular activities (20 points) d.
Work / research experience (30 points) e.
500 word Essay Response to “What is the most significant water quality issue today, and why?” (30 points)
Responses to the essay question may be submitted for publication in VWEA’s newsletter,

Conduit , if permitted by the applicant. The scholarship winner will also receive a free one-year membership to VWEA.
The application deadline is May 18, 2015.
The scholarship shall be presented to the recipient during a presentation at the 2015 Joint Annual Meeting (Water JAM) held in Virginia Beach, VA during the Awards Banquet, September 16, 2015.
All decisions made by VWEA for the selection of the scholarship recipient will be final. The scholarship monies are intended for educational purposes.

This scholarship awards an individual based on merit for furthering his or her education.
Eligibility
Full- or part-time engineering or science graduate student, member of VWEA, attending college in Virginia currently and in the Fall 2015 semester.
Requirements
1. A completed "VWEA Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship" application.
2. A resume indicating your academic performance, extracurricular activities (including VWEA events), and work experience.
3. Unofficial or official up-to-date transcript or official semester schedule of college currently attending (GPA 3.25 or above).
4. A 500word essay on “What is the most significant water quality issue today, and why?”
