BIG IDEA 1: Nature of Science (chapter 1)
NAME_______________________HR____
FOREVER UNDERSTANDING:
Science is a process that humans undergo that helps them
to develop a more accurate understanding about how the
natural world operates.
Science can be done poorly
There are necessary components to experiments to ensure
humans actually measure what they are trying to measure
Topic 1: Nature of science
1.1.1
Essential Knowledge: Scientific conclusions rely on carefully
constructed experiments. Though there is no definitive order that
these experiments need to run in, they do have several
components that help scientists to accurately determine the results
of what they have chosen to investigate.

Learning Objective
I can identify the
components of an
experiment that I did not
conduct.
I can construct and
implement an investigation
to solve a question that I
develop about the natural
world.
I can explain the
relationships between
independent and
dependent variables
I can use control variables

to help me determine if my
results are random or due
to a traceable cause.
1.1.2
Essential Knowledge: Graphs are an important and helpful way to
express data collected from scientific experiments.

I can identify the
independent and
dependent variables on a
graph.
I can write a title to a
graph that helps the
reader understand what
the graph is trying to show
them.
I can construct a graph
using a data table that
includes appropriate units
and number scale.
1.1.3
Essential Knowledge: Scientific investigations can only examine
the natural world. Supernatural occurrences cannot be investigated
by science.

topic can be studied using
the scientific method or if
it is beyond the scope of
science.
1.1.4
Essential Knowledge: Science can be done poorly. Scientific
findings can be poorly interpreted.

Learning Objective
I can identify bias in
investigations/reports.
I can analyze variables to
determine whether there is
correlation or causation
between the two variables.
