Theoretical Review
1. Definition of Outbound
In 1933, Dr. Kurt Hahn fled to England because of different political views
with Hitler. With the help of Lawrence Holt, a merchant vessel entrepreneur, he
founded the outbound educational institutions. Hahn uses the name when founded
Outward Bound schools located in Aberdovey, Wales, in 1941. In Indonesia,
although it does not mean that the method is known to new entrants in 1990 under
the name of outward Bound Indonesia. Outbound becoming known as a training
method for self-development in the tim. Outbound is a training method for self
development (personal development) and team (team development) in the process
of searching through the experience of outdoor activities. As for some of the
locations of frequently used outbound companies - companies in the field for at
North Sumatra region as Kampoeng Stakoetoe Outbound Sport Recreation
Pancurbatu Deli Serdang, articles for Outward Bound, the zoo field of 30 acres, the
village fields in Jl. Tuntungan - Tanjung Anom, Pancur Stone, Deli Serdang, and
Bukit Lawang. Implementation outbound itself usually through a team organizer or
an outbound training providers, some of which are quantum outbound management
training, Sibolangit outbound, Bukit Lawang outdoor, sustainable natural media,
gagana coal, earth outdoors, and others.
Outbound not only be done by adults or just in the world of work. But in
Indonesia now has more outbound developed with learning for young children.
Expected to outbound, it will be 'broken' communication for children to feel the
presence of the parents and the parents themselves feel closer emotionally to the
child. In outbound, children will be invited to develop the ability ESQ (emotional
and spiritual quotient), as well IQ (intelligent quotient). In the outbound activities,
followed by children, for while parents participate with their children outbound
even he had to abandon the role and status for a while to make it more effective.

3. Objectives and Benefits from Outbound
Learning activities in the open-space like outbound can increase the courage
to act and argue. Outbound activities form a creative mindset, and improve
emotional and spiritual intelligence in the interaction. These activities will add to
the experience of one's life to a maturation itself.
Experience in outbound activities provide positive input in the development
of maturity of the people. That experience starting from the formation of the group.
Then each group will face how to work together. Together make decisions and
courage to take risks. Each group is going to face the challenge of taking
responsibility that must be passed.
The aim of utbound in general is to gain confidence in themselves in order to
give the process of self-therapy (those with disabilities) in communication, and lead
to the understanding, thus creating mutual trust among others. Ancok also asserts in
his book Outbound Management Training (2003: 3) that:
Outdoor training methods are also used for psychotherapy sake (see Gass,
1993). This training is used to improve self-concept for naughty children, drug
addicts, and difficulties in social relationships. The same method was also used to
strengthen family ties air-issues in family therapy program (family therapy). Afiatin
(2003) in her dissertation research has been using outbound training for countering
illicit drug users. In her research, Afiatin found that the use of outbound is able to
increase the resistance of the temptation to use drugs. In addition, it was reported
also by Afiatin,the research which is conducted by Johnson and Johnson that the
activity in the outbound training can increase the feelings of social life (sense of
community) among the participants.
The aim of outbound according to Adrian and Yufiarti, in the journal
Cultivating Character Students through Outbound Activity (2006: 42) is :
a. identify students' strengths and weaknesses;
b. in accordance with its own way of expression that is environmentally acceptable;
c. know and understand the feelings, opinions of others and respect for diversity;
d. generate enthusiasm and motivation to continue to engage in those activities;
e. more independent and act in accordance with the will;
f. more empathetic and sensitive to the feelings of others;
g. able to communicate well;
h. know how to learn effectively and creatively;
i. provide an understanding of something about the importance of good character;
j. instill positive values that formed the character of elementary school students
through a variety of real-life examples in the experience of life;
k. develop the quality of student life character;
l. implementing, and provide examples of good character to the environment.
From the statements above, it is clear that the aim of outbound itself is as a
process of individual therapy and family therapy or group who experienced gaps.
For the example individual therapy for children with aberrations like naughty
children, drug users, children with impaired social relationships (children with
special needs). Meanwhile, family therapy or group who experienced social
inequalities that need to be refresh. Neither conducting recreation and/or outbound
activities. For example, in a group or organization holding outbound activities once
a year in order to enhance a sense of community, improving the quality of the
employees and the company.
Outbound activities of individuals or groups will create many benefits.
Starting with creating new experience. Spur a sense of courage. Building a sense of
community. Effective communication between people. Acting in accordance with
the circumstances. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each
existing on himself or others. Can cause a sense of mutual respect in every decision.
Outbound is also useful as a training process to stimulate someone’s way of
thinking to always think systematically.
