“Speaking ENDORSE fluently” www.endorse-fp7.eu GEO and GEOSS: “Group on Earth Observations” and the “Global Earth Observation System of Systems” ENDORSE GA n°262892 ENergy DOwnstReam SErvices The A project funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the EU GEO is coordinating international efforts to build a GEOSS. This emerging public infrastructure is interconnecting a diverse and growing array of instruments and systems for monitoring and forecasting changes in the global environment. This “system of systems” supports policymakers, resource managers, science researchers and many other experts and decision-makers. http://www.earthobservations.org/index.html GMES: “Global Monitoring for Environment and Security” The project ENDORSE “Energy Downstream Services” aims at developing the use of Earth Observation (EO) GMES is the European Programme for the establishment of a European capacity for Earth Observation (EO). It data: satellite images, large numerical models, and ground-based observations, in renewable energies. consists in a complex set of systems which collects data from multiple sources (EO satellites and in situ sensors The European Union (EU) has established the initiative GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and such as ground stations, airborne and sea-borne sensors), processes these data and provides users with reliable Security), together with the European Space Agency, to foster the European capacity for Earth Observation. and up-to-date information through the services in the six following thematics: land, atmosphere, emergency, security and climate change. http://www.gmes.info ENDORSE contributes to GMES and exploits its data to realize services dedicated to companies. FP7 is the short name for the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. It is the EU's main instrument for funding research in Europe and it will run from 2007 to 2013. FP7 provides funding to ENDORSE up to 2.4 M€. Vocabulary and Acronyms ENDORSE is coordinated by Armines (France) and will last from January 2011 to December 2013. Product: a product is a piece of information that answers the needs of a user. It can take various forms: data sets, ENDORSE comprises ten services dedicated to energy from sun, wind and biomass, management of electricity audit reports, maps, etc. A product is generated by exploiting methods processing Core Services data and other network, and energy savings in buildings. The methodology is user-driven: users are involved in the design of the EO data. For example, the product generated by the service S1 “Local atlas generation” is a local atlas. products, the acceptance of the services and the dissemination of the results of the ENDORSE project. Service: a service is the ensemble of infrastructures –personnel, connection to users, legal, financial, administrative and commercial affairs–, hardware –computers, networks, communications–, information –Core Services data, other EO data, other data–, and operations –workflow, data provisioning, methods, monitoring, reporting, delivery–, that should be assembled in order to generate a product in an operational way. When such a service is operated permanently, whether on a commercial basis or not, it is called an operational service. The development of a service begins with the development of a product. It is then completed by setting up the various elements that permit its operation. Consequently, the project ENDORSE comprises two successive and distinct parts: development of products, and development Partners: of services. ARMINES A pre-market service is defined here as a precursor of an innovative service, having a market potential and being replicable. The pre-market service aims at demonstrating the benefits of the corresponding service if it were operational to, on the one hand, end-users in renewable energies, and on the other hand, service industry. Compared to operational services, the pre-market services do not include all the elements of a service. Nevertheless, all these elements will be documented for each pre-market service.
