Steps
1. Cut block to rough length: remember to add 25mm or 1" to finished dimension
when laying out rough length.
2. Assess grain direction: you may need to plane a little off the face and one edge
to be able to see what direction the grain is going.
3. Plane Reference Face: make sure it is dead FLAT and smooth. This is the face
from which all other measurements will be taken.
4. Plane Reference Edge: make sure the reference edge is SQUARE to the face
5. Plane block to Width: measure across the face at both ends and draw a line
parallel to the reference edge. Plane to this line. Check for square off the
Reference Face.
6. Plane block to Thickness: using the bench dog, plane the block to the correct
thickness. Check for square from reference edge, and make sure it is flat and
smooth.
7. Cut one square End using the back saw and a bench pin: this your finished
end, and should be a clean, square cut.
8. Cut to Length using the back saw and a bench pin,: measure carefully. Cut
cleanly and squarely. This is your finished length size.
Hand it in.
