To: From: Robert Trapp, Willamette University Li Qianmei, Guilin University of Electronic Technology RE: Invitation to participate in debate training and tournament in Guilin. Guilin University of Electronic Technology (GUET) in partnership with Willamette University and the China Debate Education Network invite you to the GUET—CDEN Invitational to be held on the campus of Guilin University of Electronic Technology, March 21-23, 2014. We invite you to come to Guilin for one day of British Parliamentary Debate training followed by two days of competition. Our training offers sessions for both debaters and judges. Students will learn about Worlds Style Debating, Case Construction, Opposition Arguments, Refutation and Points of Information, Extension and Summaries, and Research and Argument Quality. Judges will learn the basics for judging and teaching British Parliamentary debate and have a chance to practice judging a debate. We hope this training will bring many new students and judges to this form of debate. Sessions will be offered for advanced and beginning debaters. GUET along with Willamette University will offer partial subsidy for expenses associated with travel to Guilin as well as lodging for those coming from outside of Guilin. To make this training a success, we ask that you arrive at GUET no later than 10:00 am on Friday March 21. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are able and willing to attend because if you are not, we would like to be able to give your space to another deserving university. We sincerely hope you are able to do us the honor of being a part of this important training. Sincerely, Li Qianmei, Guilin University of Electronic Technology Tournament Host Robert Trapp Willamette University Tournament Director TRAINING AND TOURNAMENT INFORMATION GUET—CDEN Invitational March 21-23, 2014 You and your debaters are welcome to attend the GUET—CDEN Invitational on March 21-23, 2014 in Guilin. Because the Chinese Debate Education Network sponsors this tournament, we are able to provide financial assistance to many of the teams who will want to attend. Details about the tournament follow. ENTRY DEADLINE Complete the entry form attached to this invitation and return it to china-debateeducation-network@willamette.edu no later than March 14, 2014. Please report entry changes as soon as possible. It may not be possible to add entries after the deadline. Contact the tournament director, Robert Trapp china-debateeducation-network@willamette.edu or Li Qianmei liqianmei666@guet.edu.cn, with any questions about registration. TOURNAMENT AND SCHOOL CAP The tournament capacity is 40 teams. Each school is allowed an initial entry of up to 4 teams. If space remains after the entry deadline of March 14, additional teams may be allowed. FEES The GUET—CDEN will not charge any participation fee. There are no entry fees for the training or the tournament, but there will be fees to cover extra judging. The tournament is following an N-1 rule for judges, which means that every school must provide judges equal to the total number of teams minus one (a group with four debate teams must provide three judges). For teams who are unable to provide enough judges, a charge of 300 RMB will apply for each judge (a group with four teams and one judge would have to pay for two judges for a total of 600 RMB). We genuinely want to provide all programs the chance to participate. Please contact the tournament director if you want to attend the tournament but are concerned about the fees. We may be able to waive the judge fee or negotiate a reduced judge fee of some sort. SUBSIDY POLICIES Most participants are eligible for a partial subsidy for participation. Schools wishing to apply for participation subsidies should complete the attached form no later than March 14 and send it to china-debate-educationnetwork@willamette.edu. Questions about the amount of subsidies should be directed to Li Qianmei. We will make final decisions about subsidies and will communicate the results of those decisions to all applicants. (Those who quit the training will not enjoy the subsidy.)
