Greeting Brothers of the Great District of Illinois
Theta Mu Lambda
Theta Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (TML) is celebrating 50 years of
“Brotherhood and Service”. TML was established on December 12, 1963 in Joliet, Illinois. Since that
date, TML has proven to be a leaders among fraternities in mentoring youth, voter’s registration, P.A.D.S,
(Public Action To Deliver Shelter), Boy Scouts of America, working with local colleges and schools, and
other Greek letter organizations to help improve the quality of life in the south suburbs of Chicago,
Illinois.
The members of TML have worked tirelessly to implement the goals of the Fraternity’s mission
statement for the past 50 years. The statement reads: “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated develops
leaders, promotes Brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our
communities”.
Doing the Work of Alpha
The members of TML began the 2013 fraternal year by asking ourselves, “How can we do what
we do... better?” In striving to answer this question, the Chapter made sure that it was at full delegate
strength for all Leadership meetings and Conferences at the local, District, Regional and National levels
of the Fraternity. The Chapter was present with the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority during the March
of Dimes “March for Babies” and assisted the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority with their
“Breakfast with Santa” and EMBODI programs. The Chapter worked with Prairie State College and
provided ties and leadership for their “Ties that Bind” program. TML mentored and provided educational
enrichment to young African-American males students through its Leaders For Tomorrow Program. At
its conclusion, TML hosted a banquet that recognized the students for their time, efforts and
accomplishments during the program’s term. TML also provided leadership in planning and
implementing the Fraternity’s Leadership Development Institute that was hosted at Northern Illinois
University and was attended by youth from the entire Midwestern region of the United States. The
Chapter assisted the New Faith Baptist Church of Matteson, Illinois with its “Angel Tree Program by
delivering Christmas gifts to children of incarcerated parents. These gifts were distributed to children
throughout the Chicago area. Members from the Chapter provided winter clothing to children in the
Kankakee area. This year Theta Mu Lambda Charitable Foundation awarded a total of $9,000.00 in
scholarship funds to 10 deserving students from funds raised during its annual Black and Gold
Scholarship Gala.
