What are fellowships?

Fellowships are competitions which award funding to support purposeful activities such as study abroad, internships, research or projects (such as community service projects).

Are the deadlines flexible? Can I get an extension?

In the interest of fairness to all applicants, all deadlines are final and non-negotiable.

What fellowships are available?

Search the Student Grants Database for fellowship opportunities which match the project you are hoping to undertake.

Studentgrants.yale.edu

Also, keep a look out for opportunities which are outside of the database. More (but not exhaustive) information can be found here: http://www.yale.edu/yalecollege/international/funding/fellowships/fundable.html

Why do the fellowships have eligibility requirements and why are they all different?

Fellowships are funded by donors and eligibility requirements are determined by donor preferences, which vary.

What are my chances of being awarded a fellowship?

The most important element in increasing your chances of being awarded fellowship funding is to put together a very strong, well-researched and well thought-out fellowship application. Next, you must match your project to a fellowship which supports the activity you hope to undertake. Your chances of winning a fellowship competition vary from fellowship to fellowship. Some fellowship funds have very limited resources and a large application pool, others are very niche and have fewer applicants. You are therefore advised to apply to as many fellowships as you and your project are eligible for, without spreading yourself too thinly. Applying thoughtfully and consistently to a range of fellowships will even out the odds.

When do I find out the results of summer fellowship competitions?

This varies from fellowship to fellowship. The results for the CIPE summer fellowship competitions administered by CIPE Fellowship Programs are typically announced in early April. Other competitions vary greatly and you should consult the instructions for the fellowship to which you are applying for further details.

Is there a cap on funding? / What is a typical award amount?

For some fellowships, there is an upper limit to how much funding is awarded per student. Other fellowships award a fixed amount to each awardee each year. Fellowships which do not have an upper limit or award a fixed amount expect applicants to submit a well-researched, sensible and feasible budget as part of the application process. See here for more details on creating a fellowship budget http://www.yale.edu/yalecollege/international/funding/fellowships/budget.html

If I am applying for an internship should I wait to hear from the internship before I apply for a fellowship?

You may apply for fellowship funding to support an internship before you have confirmation that you have been accepted onto the internship. You should make the situation clear in your fellowship proposal. You should inform the Fellowships Office as soon as possible, once you hear back from the internship so that the committees are aware of the most recent status of your internship.

If you find out at any point before fellowship awards are made that your internship application was unsuccessful, you should let us know as soon as possible.

What happens if I am awarded a fellowship but I am later informed that I have not been accepted onto the internship I was hoping to do?

If you are awarded fellowship funding and find out that you have secured the internship you were hoping for, you will notify the Fellowships Office that you would like to accept the fellowship.

Alternatively, if you find out that your internship application was not successful, you will contact the

Fellowships Office as soon as possible to let us know.

What should I do if I can’t afford to carry out my proposed project/internship without fellowship funding?

If you cannot afford to do an internship without fellowship funding, you will need to explore other funding options and be prepared to put these into action. Due to the competitive nature of fellowships, funding is not guaranteed. Fellowship competitions which support internships are scarce and very competitive and you are advised to take this into account when making your plans. A list of alternative funding sources is available here. http://www.yale.edu/yalecollege/international/funding/fellowships/fundable.html

If you hear that you have been accepted onto an internship or program and the deadline for accepting the internship or program comes before you will find out whether you have been successful in securing fellowship funding (for example, the deadline for accepting your internship is in March and you will not find out about fellowship funding until April), you may find that you have to decline the internship or program.

In the interests of maintaining courteous and professional relationships with organizations, it is always best to get in touch with them as soon as possible if it looks likely that you may not be able to take up the offer extended to you.

Can I do more than one activity in a summer?

It is up to you how you plan your summer! However, be aware that if you receive fellowship funding you are essentially entering into a contractual agreement to carry out your proposed project as a full-time commitment in the location and time frame presented to the committee. If you do not meet the minimum duration eligibility requirements you may be required to return some or all of the funding awarded to you. Pay attention to the minimum duration eligibility requirements for the fellowship(s) you are interested in and be realistic about what you can feasibly achieve in the time you have.

There will be other summers and other opportunities – it is usually more valuable to thoroughly immerse yourself in one activity and do it well than to jump from one activity to another and not have the time to fully engage with and reflect upon your experience.

I am interested in doing several different projects – can I apply for fellowship funding for all of them?

You may only submit one application per individual fellowship. You may only submit one application per common application. However, you may apply to more than one fellowship and submit a different proposal to each fellowship (for example you may apply to the Summer Common Application with a proposal to carry out research in Peru and submit a separate application to the Heinz Fellowship with a proposal to undertake an internship in Washington DC.)

It is not recommended that you submit applications for more than three different projects. It is expected that you are applying for fellowship funding to support a single project or activity that you are committed to and passionate about. It is sensible and understandable that you would have a plan B and even a plan C in case your main project doesn’t work out. However, submitting applications for your main project and also having a plan B through to a plan Z may make it appear to committees that you are not serious about, or committed to, any of the proposed projects.

Is it possible to submit more than one proposal to the same fellowship?

No, you may only submit one application, proposing one project, per fellowship.

Is it possible to submit more than one proposal to different fellowships?

Yes, you may apply for as many fellowships as you would like to, as long as you only submit one application per fellowship. However, if you are applying for different fellowships to support different activities beware of spreading yourself too thinly. Fellowship committees are interested in supporting an activity that you are serious about which is well thought-out and feasible. If you are trying to juggle too many options, you run the risk of making a compromise on the quality of each fellowship application.

I am applying to carry out a project/internship with an organization but won’t know where I will be placed until the fellowship application deadline has passed. What should I do?

If you are applying to carry out an internship or project with an organization that may place you in one of several locations, you should make this clear in your fellowship proposal. Based on the information you do have, be sure to outline the tasks you expect to be undertaking (these should be the same or similar for each location) and indicate the locations you may be assigned to. Create a budget which would be sensible, based on the location with the highest living costs and state that you have done this in the “budget details” of the budget section of your application. If you are awarded, the committee will determine the award amount accordingly, once the location of your project/internship has been revealed to you.

Is it possible to be awarded fellowship funding if my plans are not yet 100% fixed?

By the time you complete a fellowship application, you should have as many aspects as possible of your project, internship or research already planned. However, the fellowship committees recognize and understand that not all plans can be 100% certain before the fellowship competition cycle. If you find out more information once you have submitted your application, you should inform the Fellowships

Office as soon as possible. If you are awarded fellowship funding for your project, you will not receive your check until you have informed the Fellowships Office of your final plans.

Why do I have to have attended an info session to be able to schedule an appointment with a fellowship advisor?

Unfortunately, time constraints do not allow Fellowship Advisors to have an individual appointment with every fellowship applicant. In order to make individual appointments as productive and valuable as possible, we want to be sure that you have explored all the general information available beforehand and come to your individual appointment with a well-developed plan and specific questions related to that plan.

I know how to apply for fellowships do I need to attend an info session? / I have been successful in being awarded a fellowship before – do I still need to come to an info session?

You are only required to attend a structured information session or workshop if you would like to have a one-to-one appointment with a CIPE fellowships advisor. It may be that you now feel more confident about the fellowship application process and do not feel that you need an individual appointment with an advisor. If this is the case, you do not need to come to a structured information session or workshop.

Informal Q&A drop-in sessions are available to all fellowship applicants in the weeks leading up to the spring fellowship deadlines. Please refer to the fellowships calendar for the dates and times of these drop-in sessions.

Even if you have applied to fellowships in previous years, you should explore the fellowships website and the student grants database to ensure that you have all the up-to-date information you need.

What happens if I am awarded funds from more than one fellowship?

If you are awarded funding from more than one fellowship you must inform the Grant Administrator for each fellowship as soon as possible. They will then establish a plan of action specific to your funding situation. This may involve you declining fellowship A and B but accepting fellowship C or it may involve a cost-share arrangement across fellowships A, B, and C.

The aim of fellowship funding is that you receive the amount of funding you need to carry out a particular project. If you receive more funding than you need, this denies another student the opportunity to carry out his/her project.

What happens if my plans change?

If your plans change completely before fellowship awards have been announced, and you no longer intend to carry out the project you outlined in your fellowship proposal, you can withdraw from fellowship competitions by letting the Fellowships Office know.

If you have been awarded a fellowship and you no longer intend to carry out the project for which you were awarded the fellowship, you must contact the Fellowships Office as soon as possible to decline or return the award so that the funds can be reallocated to another short-listed applicant.

Whatever the scenario, if there is a change in your plans you must contact the Fellowships Office as soon as possible.

May I request funds to compensate for lost summer earnings or in lieu of the salary for an unpaid internship?

Fellowship funds are intended to allay the costs of activities such as internships or research. They are not intended to compensate for lost earnings or to be in lieu of a salary.

May I request funds to purchase equipment which is essential to the research I propose to conduct?

Funds which have been awarded through a Yale College fellowship administered by CIPE Fellowship

Programs may not be used to cover the purchase of equipment, even if this equipment is essential to the research you propose to conduct. Funds also may not be used to purchase equipment or supplies which you will use and leave behind for use by the organization you are working with.

May I delay conducting my proposed project/research?

Once you have signed your Fellowship Award Agreement, you are obliged to carry out your fellowship activity within the time frame you have stipulated. You may not postpone your fellowship activity to take place later in the year or to take place the next year.

However, you should note that if you are waiting for IRB approval/exemption you may not start your research until you have received confirmation from the Human Subjects Committee. This may cause a delay in the start date of your project. Please keep in touch with the Fellowships Office if this is the case.

What should I do if I receive a Letter of Affiliation after the fellowship deadline?

If you receive a letter of affiliation after the fellowship application deadline contact the Grant

Administrator to let him/her know. The Grant Administrator will consult the Chair of the fellowship committee to see if the committee will accept the letter with the fellowship application.
