Summary Statement
This is a full-time director for an innovative national scholars program in
conservation, with special emphasis on increasing conservation's reach
and effectiveness by cultivating greater diversity in the field and its
leadership. The director will manage and help build the Doris Duke
Conservation Scholars Program at UCSC (DDCSP at UCSC) to recruit
nationally; select 20 diverse scholars each year with passion and
transformative potential; coordinate and deliver integrative training and
mentoring for each scholar cohort; cultivate an enduring community
among scholars and their mentors, instructors, families, peers, and
partner organizations; seek additional funding; and manage program
budget, finances and reporting.
A graduate degree in conservation (such as conservation science,
policy, law or biology) or a relevant field, or equivalent research work
experience
Demonstrated, excellent interpersonal skills: collaborative,
communication, networking, organizational and mentoring experience
Qualifications / Competencies
Demonstrated commitment to and experience working towards the goal
of increasing conservation's reach and effectiveness, particularly
through an increase in the diversity of its leaders and practitioners
Experience working successfully with students from diverse
backgrounds as a teacher, mentor, researcher, and/or supervisor,
especially with high school and/or college undergraduate students
Experience writing successful grants, managing budgets, and reporting
Experience working in the field of conservation
Must have the ability to mentor and interact with students and staff
Experience working in the conservation sector outside of academia (e.g.
for an NGO, foundation, government agency or private firm)
Preferred Qualifications / Competencies
Experience teaching in the field to undergraduates, high school
students, or other post-primary students; experience teaching in the
classroom, leading workshops, or otherwise providing instruction or
facilitation to groups
Leadership and/or diversity training
Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history
background check
Must have the ability to travel to other parts of the U.S. 3-5 times per
year for 2-7 days
Must have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods with
or without accommodations
Special Conditions of Employment
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be
able to drive a van
Ability to work in an outdoor setting, including modest hiking,
negotiation of uneven terrain, work in inclement weather, and overnight
camping

Selection
Lead outreach, recruitment, and selection of 20 undergraduate conservation scholars each
year to participate in a two-year program based at UC-Santa Cruz. Establish key staff/
faculty contacts at approximate 40 4-year colleges; develop and deliver printed, web, and
in-person information about program; contribute to design of application materials; solicit
applications; contribute to application review and selection.
Work closely with supervisor and collaborators to design and implement programming,
including an 8-week annual summer conservation research and leadership course; annual

program effectiveness. Organize annual virtual advisory board meeting, solicit input from
advisory board members about program elements including internship placements, guest
speakers, and other resources for the program.
