FIELDWORK INSTRUCTIONS
Fieldwork Task
Your task is to investigate the Human Urban Environment of Chapel Street, Prahran. This urban zone
stretches from the south bank of the Yarra River at Alexandra Avenue in the north, to Windsor Train Station
and the arterial transport route of Dandenong Road/Princes Highway in the south.
Your fieldwork task is to explore the hypothesis below and decide whether or not you agree or disagree with
the statement. You must provide substantial primary and secondary sources of data to support your
contention.
Hypothesis: The inner suburb of Prahran is a mixed urban zone of use, wealth and employment opportunities.
You must complete the following tasks and present them as an A4 fieldwork booklet.
1. Introduction
 Your introduction should briefly outline the purpose of the fieldwork and explain your
contention regarding the hypothesis. (Approx. 100 words)
2. Methodology
 You must identify and explain the methods that you are using to collect primary and
secondary data and explain how they will help you to determine conclusive results. This
should be descriptive text. (Approx. 200 words)
3. Results
Map of the street
 You must accurately create a map of Chapel Street that uses appropriate categories to subdivide the street layout into specific land use zones or areas (i.e. High quality fashion retail,
Restaurants, Public Services)
History of Chapel Street
 You must construct an annotated visual display of the history of Chapel Street, Prahran. This
should be completed using a range of historic sources.
 You must present this component as an annotated timeline (including historic photographs).
Site comparisons
 At a variety of self-selected sites along the Chapel Street precinct, you must compare a range
of criteria that will help you to determine the ‘use, wealth and employment opportunities’
available in the local area. This is an important fieldwork process to help you to provide
substantiated evidence to support your hypothesis contention. Or in other words, evidence
to back up your opinion.
 You must decide on appropriate criteria (i.e. property size, type of property, property use,
goods sold, quality of footpath, quality of the natural environment, aesthetics).
 You must devise an suitable method to record your data
 You must take photographs of each selected site and accurately locate the site on your map
(mark each site with an individual code/symbol)
4. Analysis & Evaluation
 Your comparative analysis should be presented as a body of text. This is where you give an
explanation of all of your results findings and outline the evidence that you have discovered
to support your conclusion. (Approx. 500 words)
5. Conclusion
 This should be a brief conclusion to summarise your contention of the hypothesis. Draw on
your key findings and conclude your writing with a final statement that defines your opinion
based on evidence. (Approx. 100 words)
